My wife yells at me because I carry very little cash. Apple pay is accepted every place I need to buy goods, so why carry cash. On the other hand, one of our friends (who we have known for 30 years) carries around $2,000, for reasons we could never figure out.

Your debit cards will be getting tap & go soon enough, as Chase, & Wells Fargo are offering contactless debit cards now. So you don't HAVE to use a credit card for tap and go.

Chase is adding it to credit cards also. My newest one from them has it.

Don't debit cards there already all have tap and go? I know that here in the US they are starting to finally do them to most cards, after realizing not everyone wants to use Apple Pay for everything. (Me on the other hand, do use Apple Pay for pretty much everything, so the more contactless readers, the better, and glad they're finally getting public transportation systems on board in the US!...Chicago & Portland already have Apple Pay a la London style, but with New York City, this is big!)

Yep, the Chase Freedom has it now, I believe the contactless debit cards are rolling out this summer is what I am told.

Why does it matter to your wife so much? Just use the cards/Apple Pay, reap the points/miles/cashback whatever, and be done with it. Never understood why some people have so much of a problem with how little/much cash others choose to carry with them.

Don't have debit card not sure to be honest. I have savings and credit.

That's what I figured. I remember Wells Fargo and Chase here in the US has had PayPass cards since the early 2000's, and people forget about this when they're "re-rolling" them out again, like its the holy grail and next best thing since sliced bread. The problem with back in the early 2000's however, was the lack of the card readers, since swiping a card was "fast enough" with things like CVM waivers.

Fast forward to the chip cards we have now, and they're "Reintroducing" PayPass, simply because "the chip is too slow", and there is a good amount of PayPass readers now, thanks to the mass chip card upgrade, requiring new terminals. It's how I am able to Apple Pay about 90% of my day now.....I am still jealous of Australia where it can easily be 100% of the day! But got to start somewhere I guess, I am happy my local gas station got new pump with PayPass readers....which means yay Apple Pay!

If you were in the US, you'd just be the average American, as card usage here is very high. :p. A lot of wallets sold now are just simple card holders. I prefer the traditional bi-fold wallet, as I have a Cartier Santos, which I do like to flex the wallet itself from time to time :p. I do only use cards/Apple Pay though exclusively.

Will keep c

Same here, card usage is getting very high with technological and other developments. I am not much into cards but getting there of course.

I'd love tap and go to become a standard here.

You just described today's wallets to a tee. I ended up going with a McQueen wallet to replace my old one a few years ago. Had just what I needed and was comfortable enough in a breast pocket of a suit or front pocket. Simple black and black design, soft leather. The Italians seem to come up with either gaudy designs a teenager would like or add bits and bobs that would otherwise hurt your tuckus, leg or chest after a few hours.

Bless the English and the late designer for not designing crap.

Yeah - convenient and all but U.S. firms just didn't see a financial reason to create them. I think a lot of people are always like "we've had XYZ better thing for so long" but fail to realize that stuff like this just comes down to financial incentives at corporations to implement. If you wind up being the first to do something and it's an infrastructure thing, others who follow and improve upon it typically have the improved infrastructure.

One that's always driven me nuts traveling internationally (I'm looking at you in particularly Canada) is when you have to stand there and actually hold the pump to fill up your vehicle. In the U.S. you just let it fill up automatically. We've had that in the U.S. for years!!!!

in the US
-especially gas stations here are low tech as they use only the credit card magnetic strip a lot. Newer gas stations may use a combination of magnetic & the chip some how. Either way the gas purchases seem the most risk.

have a chat with your bank:
-some debit cards are not wide open and instead you have limited liability.
-you can put your photo on the debit or credit card
-you may be able to setup your card so you get a real time text or email with almost every transaction reporting amount & location. Gas station purchases are the most notable transaction where you don't get an amount reported back.
-Keep your debit or credit cards only for a year
-Pay ALL of your bills using your bank's bill pay. It acts as a 3rd party filter. Bill pay keep better records come tax time

i use an Incipio iPhone case that can carry my drivers license + 2or3 credit cards. Keep it simple; no wallet, no cash.

I recently got a text alert about a purchase. Some one in North Dakota paid their cell phone bill with my debit card. I don't think what was fraud rather there is a high percentage of errors and leaks.

Didn’t know you could put a photo on your card. That’s a really good idea. Going to look into that.

There's a gas station near me that has "we've installed the latest card reader technology!" stickers on the pumps. They're using magnetic swipe. o_O

I rarely carry cash anymore but I have never activated tap on any of my cards, nor used Apple Pay with my AW4. My phone case holds 4 cards and that’s usually all I have with me. The four cards I take with me depends on where I’m going. I rotate 5 or 6 in and out. S

I hardly ever have cash. Use cash back credit cards and pay them off as I go - so no debt.

I have to make it a point to get cash for a local breakfast place that only takes cash and then also for gratuity for the cleaning employees at hotels. But that’s really it - everything else is paid with my 2% back CC.
