I hate the heavy use of flash, but flash is far from dead, and I don't get how so many here think Apple is killing it with the iPad. Windows is king in this world, and with with hardware acceleration a HD youtube video uses something like 10% CPU. Imagine 2 years from now when computers are even more power. And what about tablets like the HP Slate and Tegra 2, both have hardware acceleration. Do you guys here really think that Apple is going to kill flash with the iPad?

Before anybody would argue that you can also have nice results without Flash, I would like to point out that some of us pay for web design and we don't want a geek wasting long hours with minor details. If you can get a nice result in X hours, I don't want to pay twice as much for the same result, just because it's not Flash and it takes a lot longer to code.

You have a valid point on the willingness or lack thereof to spend good money for someone to spend more time on a alternate program for the same results. However, If you are paying for development for say, and advertisement to be generated, and your $x.00 will buy your development built on Flash and can reach y% of web surfers, but you could spend $x.00+change to build that same advert to reach y% AND the additional z% using handhelds and iPads, then the option for Flash is less attractive, and will ulitmately cost you more money due to the restricted market you are intending to reach.

Nope. I don't even want them to kill Flash. But it sure is nice that website owners are realizing that simple tasks like video streaming no longer require it, and they can use something simpler that reaches more end users instead.

doesn't CBS have the lowest ratings and has had the lowest ratings for years now? i guess this is a cheap way to get people to watch their shows

The thing is, Apple is blaming Adobe for OS X not being able to handle Flash. And if Apple can't make it run on a Mac, they won't try it on an iPhone or iPad. Adobe builds a pretty good Application, and Apple blames them for something Apple can't make their OS do. It runs on other OS's fine. Why does Apple blame Adobe for something Apple falls short on having the technology in their OS to handle?
That being said, I've looked on the Internet for a good HTML5 authoring program. Yes, I looked on the Canvas site. What a let down. That site looks like they dream of having something, but in fact aren't offering anything that comes close to Flash. Not even the inexpensive Flash Authoring programs like SwishMax. And I'd like to be able to find one. Even one that converts Flash to HTML5. I see a lot of people on this Forum that is like a Parrot. If Apple says something may be great, the Fanboys are saying it IS, or will be great.
I just can't find anything. And unless Apple becomes very large in the Computer market (percentage of users), it will be a long time before something replaces Flash. If HTML5 will be so great, why can't I find something to author vidoes with, let alone something inexpensive. Or even convert. I run a few websites, and would welcome an alternative. One that would run on Apple computers AND PC's, iPhones, iPad, etc. And an inexpensive alternative!

I hope HTML 5 does a nice job in replacing certain things and make the web smoother, but I highly doubt it's going to replace flash video. Why would it when most modern computers have hardware acceleration. 10% - like 15% CPU for an HD video, and who knows how little by the time html5 youtube comes out of beta. (There are steps that video must go through, and unlike playing a video from your hard drive, flash would do all the steps on the CPU, but now that's not the case.) So I really doubt html 5 will kill flash video, unless Microsoft decides not to support it. And since they have silverlight, they would definitely get sued, and lose.

LOL

Flash isn't going anywhere anytime soon. If you think the iPad (or this news of CBS) just killed flash, you're nuts.

It's funny how a lot of MR have a hard time grasping the concept of SHARING.

Let me expand on that. A lot of people on MR seem to think there can be only one device. Or one technology.

i.e. The Kindle is dead because of the iPad; Flash is dead because of html5.

What you fail to realize is that there is plenty of space in the world for competing products and technologies.

Would you say AAC has killed MP3?
Had the iPod eliminated the marketplace for the hundreds of other MP3 players?

I could go on. Point is - HTML5 has a long way to go and doesn't offer (for better or worse) the same options as Flash. And PCs with windows (which DOMINATES the marketplace) has little to no issues with flash resources.

Advertisers want to follow the money of the affluent? True. Guess what - there's a script for that. On devices that can display flash, they will. On sites that don't, they won't.

Do any of you even work in either advertising or publishing? I do. And we get ads in all formats because advertisers want to reach everyone they can with whatever device they can.

How many browsers support full HTML5? Exactly.

You can dream about the future without flash. But I hope your dreams aren't in this decade because it's not happening. Flash and HTML5 will happily co-exist. And why isn't that ok?

Why do those that hate flash have to see things so black and white? Why can't you enjoy having HTML5 alternatives AND have flash at the same time? Why do you need to kill one to have the other. You don't. Which brings my post full circle.

But most importantly, advertisers like Flash. You know, companies paying for banners that generate revenue for all sorts of websites.

THIS!!!

I'll say a little nondenominational prayer... Oh please dear programming language god in the ether... PLEASE I implore you, never let FLASH completely die... and most importantly try your best to get the REST of the web based advertisers to ONLY support FLASH.. Our world would be a much better place because of it. :D

Like the Wicked Witch of the West melting down after being doused with water, so too is the iPad h8tr on hearing major companies are starting to support HTML5 immediately. Too funny to hear their last shrieks... "but cheezy games. Annoying animated ads. Random browser freezes. You will rue the day Flash became less dominant. Rue it."

Oh!My beautiful wickedness!
What a world what a world!

iPad baaad.
Flash goood!

I'm all for HTML5 taking over from flash as the predominant video delivery system. Flash seems unnecessary for something that's become such an important/trivial web function.

No way would I like to see flash "die" though, there is a lot of game and web-app development in flash. A lot of great games are made in flash, so we should all be happy for its existance, not wishing it'd go away.

Actually CBS has been number 1 for a while I believe, thanks to the CSI shows and the monday night comedy lineup.

As far as I've been able to gather, the ONLY reason why Flash won't run well products is simply that Apple won't allow Adobe to access the (for want of a better word) parts of the code that it need to access to actually make flash run well in the 1st place.

Like like saying they can't make me a fine wooden cabinet, but I won't allow them to access the nice special tools that I keep locked away in my tool cupboard.

Whereas Msoft Does give Adobe access to it's super sharp good tools so they can make high quality wooden cabinets for windows.

Even these major newspapers used and still use Flash.

I'm sure that if the iPad would support Flash, there wouldn't be so much hostility towards it. What the hell is happening with these people?

Your point highlights an inconsistency in Jobs reluctance to allow Flash. I see Apple empowers users to be creative without having to worry about what's under the hood. Flash is actually the same - actionscript is optional. HTML5 is very nice and welcome but to be creative with it requires considerable code, time and further knowledge of scripting languages. This just feels like a backwards step - perhaps Jobs has some ideas on future applications to help Creatives deal with the code.

I browse without flash every day

x3

Indeed, I block Flash on my desktop browser. Far from missing it, I actively try to kill it.

So those of you who think we can't get through the day without Flash, you're wrong.

Those of you who think it would be a simple thing for Apple to allow Flash on the iPad (or iPhone for that matter) are also wrong. Flash is meant for a mouse device, not a mouseless device. It just won't work right for these new class of devices. It's not Steve being stubborn, it's Flash being designed for the previous class of computers.

Well to play devil's advocate. If Steve ALLOWED flash, there could be a work around or other development in Flash to adjust for tablet computing.

I mean - you all want to say there's a workaround for flash. If that's the case, then certainly there can be workarounds for "needing" a mouse...

choices

are you honestly defending choice while supporting Apple's decision to not include Flash? you do see the hypocrisy, right?

if by "many of those devices" you mean apple's iPhone OS devices, you are correct.

Surely you see the hypocrisy of your own statement, right? There have been slate computers for years, most of which run flash... AND NOBODY BOUGHT THEM. You have plenty of choices. So make another choice.
