If they can't sell more due to manufacturing capacity constraints, why would they do it? It would add to consumer confusion and a bunch of uninformed customers would buy the wrong kind, or buy one and then complain that they can't switch from Verizon to AT&T or the other way around. It'd be rather messy, I think. Well, messy by Apple's standards anyway.

One thing I assumed there is that Apple can't adjust manufacturing capacity in the short run. If there are other factories that can be added in the near future, the CDMA phone might make a bit more sense. Anyone has info on that part of the equation?

lol... no.. it can display more lol... thats what zooming in and out is for. the resolution is plenty... unless your like 6 inches for the screen... or have the phones next two each other.

whats the big deal with voice and data at once.... oh no! i cant keep checking my facebook while on the phone! ill never survive!! Because you cant call back if you need to look something up... SUCH a HUGE feature.

That is unique to GSM carriers like AT&T
Nah, it's more than that. The original iPhone could not do simultaneous voice and data because the latter was GPRS (EDGE), even though the network was GSM.

The key is the availability of HSPA 3G data services. With that, you can run data on 3G and voice on GSM. The later iPhones also can do voice on UTMS. Note that South Korea has no GSM network but they support the later models of the iPhone because there is a UTMS/HSPA 3G network.

Note that there is now technology called SV-DO that allows for simultaneous voice and data on a CDMA network. I believe Qualcomm has a chip that does this, it is just waiting for a handset. Is it the iPhone? No one knows, but the opportunity appears to be there.

One simple example is talking on the phone while driving and using GPS with live traffic.

You should consider expanding your ideas of what these smartphones do for people.

Can you imagine if sprint got the iphone before verizon? their $69 unlimited data/cell to cell plan would be an unbelievable deal...dream on...dream away....
One possibility that you must consider is that Sprint might modify their plans and eliminate the unlimited data plan if they got the iPhone.

Note that AT&T increased their Early Termination Fee ($325 now?) shortly before they started selling the iPhone 4. They also changed their subscription plans before the new handset released, too.

It's called texting. Been threading text conversations without the added stalking much better than BBM for a while now...

texting isn't the same as bbm. at all. if it were the same could be said for AIM on the iphone, or skype. bbm is real time and very reliable.

I know a bunch of people on verizon who have droids or other android phones who would switch to an iPhone in a HEARTBEAT if it came to verizon (not to mention my entire family and myself). People saying that people wouldn't want an iPhone because they have a droid are a bunch of looneys. What kind of person wouldn't want the best phone in the world on a really great network?

it's a win/win. Consumers are happy, verizon and apple are making money...what is there to lose?

CDMA is old technology. Here in Australia, CDMA was shut down years ago and replaced with NextG or UMTS. No CDMA phones work in Australia anymore. I think its about time the US dumped CDMA, as it appears Australia is well advanced technologically than the US in mobile networks. Im proud im Australian :)

It's not easy, especially in a huge country like the US, to switch network types at the drop of a hat. Moving to a different 3G standard now would be stupid with LTE right around the corner.

Australia dropping CDMA complicated matters; not only did customers need to buy new phones but it also made it much more difficult for roaming; even now we have about 1.5 million CDMA users in NZ who are no longer able to take their phones with them when visiting Australia.

While CDMA is slowly going away, there's no pressing need for the US to drop it immediately. Telecom NZ has rolled out WCDMA and while most of the early adopters have moved across, there are still plenty of people moving by attrition. Telecom is slowly pushing people across by closing "WorldMode" roaming soon, with EVDO to also disappear later this year, but non-technical "voice and text" users will probably be on CDMA for some time yet. I imagine that the same sort of thing will happen with a US rollout of LTE; the entire customer base isn't going to suddenly swap to new hardware in one fell swoop.

What is the big deal for Iphone coming to verizon?? Arent the prices the same thing to compared to att or am i missing something/?

I am STILL not getting my hopes up because I can just see Apple saying these are to be used in China. Can you imagine all the Verizon users, including me, disappointment?

Please be the CDMA iPhone for Verizon! I would very much like that!

I can't imagine Apple would develop a CDMA-only iPhone this late in the game considering that CDMA should definitely be out the door within the next 2-3 years.

1) CDMA isn't on the way "out" in the next 2-3 years. Verizon has said it'll be around at least until the end of the decade. After all, why give up a perfectly working CDMA network for all the people using mostly voice on cheap handsets? AT&T won't totally give up GSM for the same reason.

2) Apple's first iPhone was EDGE only, which was about as low tech as you could get back then. They were perfectly happy making a phone that they intended to make obsolete within a year.

If iPhone does come to Verizon, I wonder how Apple is planning to respond to Verizon's stance on loading their crap on my devices. I currently have a Storm 1, and I count over 10 apps that Verizon loaded onto my phone that I absolutely cannot delete- I can only "hide" them.

At least you can hide them :)

Apple doesn't let anyone get rid of built-in apps on the iPhone.

That image of a Verizon phone splash screen conveniently covers the network display logo or type, hence it is not a "real photo". Would it say CDMA? C?

I have an iPhone month 2 EDGE that still does all of its original functions and more.

I could see an iPhone with a CDMA/GSM LTE hybrid chip. Since LTE is a new technology, it's not going to be everywhere except for major metropolitan areas. The iPhone would need to be backwards compatible to "fall back" on the CDMA EVDO 3g network - which is very quick imo. Much like how when there's no 3g on an iPhone, it falls back onto EDGE

MSN, GTalk, Jabber, AIM, and ICQ via Beejive on iPhone, in my experience, is realtime and very reliable. The only way it's inferior to BBM is that the mobile clients some of my friends use aren't anywhere near as suitable and well-made, and have occasional problems :p.

Verizon iPhone would be a good thing. Let's see if it actually happens, though.

"Apple is a company that doesn't have the most resources of everybody in the world. And the way we've succeeded is by choosing what horses to ride very carefully, technically. We try to look for these technical vectors that have a future. And that are headed up. Different pieces of technology kind of go in cycles. They have their springs and summers and autumns and then they go to the graveyard of technology. So we try to pick things that are in their springs."

hmmmm accept my phone downloads all the maps it needs before hand... so unless i make a wrong turn i dont need data while driving.. and you shouldnt be talking and using it as a gps at the same time anyway

Each to his own... but i wouldnt call the iphone 4 the best smart phone for everyone... now the original iphone and even the iphone 3g i would definitely call the best smartphone of their time...

all this talk about apple not making a CDMA iphone because CDMA is on its way out is just dumb. Think of it from a profit standpoint.

If VZW got the iphone, i am absolutely convinced it will sell like hot cakes. Im eligible to upgrade now to any droid or BB (realistically id only consider the droid) i want but its worth wait to see how these rumors become more clear as january approaches.

Say the new cdma iphone comes out in january and tons of people buy it... then a year later, VZW's LTE network becomes totally stable (stay with me)... apple will then release a LTE iphone, and hoards of people will go buy that as well...

The bottom line is, from a perspective of making money... making something that will be "somewhat obsolete" in about a year makes good sense if the item sells well... which, like i said before, i am very confident that tons of people would get.

SIDENOTE ABOUT DROID X - as someone else stated, bigger screens and low resolution do not mix.. i played with one at the vzw store today and although its not horrible, my girlfriends iphone 4 looked soooooo clean and crisp. It really comes down to quality vs quantity in terms of screen size...

According to Gruber's sources, the device, which carries an internal code name of "N92", has reached the "engineering verification test" (EVT) stage of development, the point at which prototypes are moving through the final steps of the testing process to ensure that they function as intended.

I guess then "engineering verification" is the process where some doofus leaves it in a bar, and Gizmodo does a "teardown" to ensure quality.

Is that about it?

Okay, here's how I see it going down.

Early 2011, iPhone is going to Verizon. They'll release revised iPhone 4's for both networks without telling anyone it has a fixed antenna. The top model will have 64 GBs of storage. It'll still be called the iPhone 4.

This iPhone has a good year in it. 2012 is when the iPhone 5 will come out.

Precisely, 2012 is the year of the iPhone 5 LTE.

Your not out of the water by a long shot. The boards will be filled with Verizon vs ATT. MR will probably have to make a ATT and Verizon Sub forums. There will battles anew my friend.

Maybe Apple will launch a new ad campaign. I can see it now:

Justin Long: "I'm a Verizon."

John Hodgman: "And I'm an AT&T."

:D
