all this talk about apple not making a CDMA iphone because CDMA is on its way out is just dumb. Think of it from a profit standpoint.

If VZW got the iphone, i am absolutely convinced it will sell like hot cakes. Im eligible to upgrade now to any droid or BB (realistically id only consider the droid) i want but its worth wait to see how these rumors become more clear as january approaches.

Say the new cdma iphone comes out in january and tons of people buy it... then a year later, VZW's LTE network becomes totally stable (stay with me)... apple will then release a LTE iphone, and hoards of people will go buy that as well...

The bottom line is, from a perspective of making money... making something that will be "somewhat obsolete" in about a year makes good sense if the item sells well... which, like i said before, i am very confident that tons of people would get.

SIDENOTE ABOUT DROID X - as someone else stated, bigger screens and low resolution do not mix.. i played with one at the vzw store today and although its not horrible, my girlfriends iphone 4 looked soooooo clean and crisp. It really comes down to quality vs quantity in terms of screen size...
ehhh thats opinion... i think the iphone 4 definitely looks amazing.. but i would rather have the extra screen space.. hah or both!!:O
iphone for verizon would be good for all though! but this is no different then any of the other rumors..

Because the usable lifespan of phone won't outlive the network viability.

They turn over every one to two years, CDMA ain't going away that quick.

& China Telecom.;)

...and KDDI au...

CDMA networks will be around until 2020 or even 2025 - they've been paid for, optimized and are extremely efficient for voice calls.

THANK YOU!!

UMTS (3G) wasn't exactly new when Apple released the original (2G) iPhone. They sold tons of them to the masses and then a year later, they release a "revolutionary" 3G model and sell even more.

If this comes to fruition, it will be no different. They'll release a CDMA/EVDO/GSM/UMTS version first. It'll sell like crazy. Then a year later later, thrown LTE into the mix. Further profit ensues.

some aussie dude said:
CDMA is old technology. Here in Australia, CDMA was shut down years ago and replaced with NextG or UMTS. No CDMA phones work in Australia anymore. I think its about time the US dumped CDMA, as it appears Australia is well advanced technologically than the US in mobile networks. Im proud im Australian

How the hell do you turn the technology choices of a phone company into a my country is better than yours type of thing. And for the record we have more than just CDMA.

Most countries have shutdown there old CDMA networks (or are doing so). From what I understand their are about twice as many GSM based network users internationally over CDMA at the moment so will be interesting to see if this rumor turns out to be correct ... Apple releasing an iPhone based on a slowly dying technology? I have my doubts ...

This is pretty much what any 2-year contract person is doing already. It is not new at all

Buy a phone, use it for 2 years, and then upgrade.

I'd like that when LTE comes down to what 3g costs right now.

The speed with which I cancel AT&T and sign on with Verizon will be legendary.

the subsidized excuse is total BS because many other countries offer subsidized UNLOCKED iPhones.

Who is subsidizing the unlocked phones?

What other companies in the US are following this same business practice?

I'm highly skeptical.

Edit: I get it now. The handsets are unlocked and subsidized, but still have a 24 month contract. Yes, this is a shoddy practice. Phones shouldn't artificially "locked" for any reason. I wonder when congress will finally take up this issue, instead of spending all year finding new ways to waste money.

CDMA-Based iPhone 4 at 'Engineering varification Test' stage

Rumors of a CDMA iPhone have been going around for ages, but now it seems that the rumors have gained a little more credibility.

Guess not, if verizon customers are used to that anyway. now my next question is tethering. do droids do that hotspot thing without paying for extra for tethering? because i keep seeing it in droid commercials. if yes, then the iphone should be able to be made into a hotspot natively too. i have to jailbreak to get that feature

As a Verizon customer and a Droid X owner I can confirm with you that the Droid can in fact mobile hotspot but Verizon's a greedy b**** and charges you 20 a month for it even though, when rooted, droids can do it free of charge just like a jailbroken iPhone can. So yes, you can freely hot spot on the Droid in the sense that you can freely do it on the iPhone... you just need a rooted droid or a jailbroken iPhone. Service providers will always continue to be greedy like that regardless of the loads of money they rake in haha.

Also, I don't mind the no talk while using data thing that comes with CDMA technology. Personally, when I use it, I'm at home so I can in fact surf while on call anyway (through wifi) and I don't mind. Not really a killer feature and I don't talk enough to warrant being angry I can't browse facebook while my friends call me in a drunken stupor :p

Wow! So perhaps in 2012 when Apple's exclusivity contract with AT&T ends, there might be a Verizon phone? Or perhaps this is a CDMA phone to be used abroad?

Anyway, the January Verizon iphone rumor is just silly. It's not happening.

And I am a Verizon customer who would love to see the iphone come to Verizon. But my wishes do not count. There is no Verizon iphone in January.

I was wondering when I would read someone mention the 2012 date

Why this is omitted all the time is beyond me.

The Verizon iPhone.. Coming right after the iPhone Nano

I have inside information. Verizon will get the iPhone. It will not be on GSM/CDMA or any other wireless network. the ViPhone will be connected by FiOS. This will give the ViPhone unprecedented speed. Verizon and Apple are working out a few technical issues. The primary issue is people getting their fiber lines tangled. One other small problem is people getting killed when they "Run out of line" while driving or in an elevator.

These problems will be solved with a built in iCutter as well as a quick dissconect. Customers will also be required to sign a liability waver. Life insurance will be provided as part of the contract.

There is no word as to the ViPhone coming in white. Speculation exists that a red and blue phone will be released on the fourth of July next year.

whats the big deal with voice and data at once.... oh no! i cant keep checking my facebook while on the phone! ill never survive!! Because you cant call back if you need to look something up... SUCH a HUGE feature.

Actually it is a huge deal. Being able to access the internet while on the phone is one of the most useful features of AT&T 3G. I guess as your example suggests you are really into face book and twitter then it is kinda silly to be able to check those sites while talking but for grownups the ability to refer to an email or look at something on the web and discuss with another person is an invaluable tool.

While his track record is not bad, it's worth pointing out that Gruber doesn't know what DVT stands for.

The 'D' in DVT stands for Design, not Device. Admittedly, this is an easy mistake to make for someone not familiar with hardware engineering.

The five development states are proto build, EVT, DVT, PVT, and steady state production. If the CDMA handset is in EVT, it's about 5-6 months away: January or February 2011 (barring any complications, of course). Gray Powell's DVT unit was about four months away from launch.

Isn't Verizon planning to roll out GSM-based LTE next year? If so, why is Apple creating a product that will drastically lag behind literally every GSM-based LTE phone that Verizon will offer next year?

yeah.. same question here, too.
if this said iPhone is going to be CDMA-only, then it's of limited use to me. If it happens, I will gladly do the walk of shame to AT&T and pick up the iPhone 4... at least that can work in more countries (with less bars).

Is it too challenging to have CDMA and LTE and GSM in the same phone, and actually have it work? Or must the customer always be maximum 40% satisfied, so they keep upgrading phones every 1 year?

Man, sure these rumors don't ever stop... like I said before "Dream on", "Droll on" people...

But the real question is... what the hell are we going to talk about once Verizon gets the iPhone? :p
When will the white iPhone be available?
Why can't I use my Verizon iPhone in Europe?
Why didn't Apple include 3G networking in the new iPod touch?
Why doesn't my battery last as long as ______?
