I agree that the iPhone 4 is easily the best looking phone on the market (in my opinion), but a larger screen is definitely something I was really looking forward to. If the 4S is the only thing to come out (likely) then I will be disappointed.

the iphone is small as it is i don't understand how people can say the ugly curve design is that much more comfortable to hold v. the iphone4 unless they palm their phones with a death grip for hours at a time

i'll be glad if apple keeps the current iphone4 form factor, it looks the best and there's virtually no difference how it feels in one's hand to ear.. for normal people.

i do hope to see a larger screen on tuesday tho.

I really loved my iPhone 3g right up until it died 2 months ago. I tried everything I could to bring it back to life but, i never made it back. Then I bought a Nexus One from a friend as it was cheaper then a used 3GS so I wasn't expecting much and I only needed it until the next iPhone came out. However, I think coming in with such a low expectation I really feel that it is a great little phone. It does need some more OS polish, but I really enjoy the bigger screen. If the next iPhone does not have a screen size increase I might just have to go android, but I won't do that until I can see what google and samsung announce on October 11th. Please Apple make me order the new iPhone before that!

i'm gonna be seriously upset when they don't announce the 5 though, been holding out for months for an upgrade with an ever-slowing 3gs.

Whether you call it an iPhone 4S or whether you call it an iPhone 5, it still is a significant upgrade. I was on 3GS and had to downgrade to a 3G while waiting. I'm very much looking forward to the next generation iPhone 4S.

I love the form of my iPhone 4, but how many phone designs stay current for over 18m? Whether we like it or not many buyers buy simply to show off that they have the latest, where is the incentive for these shallow buyers to upgrade from a 4 to a 4S? If the rumor of this regular dumbed down 8GB 4 being made available, it will look identical to the new 4S.

Ok so plenty of techie types are more interested in what's under the hood, but I would say that number is less than the fashion led types that want to have the latest model to pose with.

I'm not saying that this is right or good, it's just how it is. Apple realise that their phone is a fashionable product, bought by these people and will not want to lose them.

I really hate how so many people stick to saying "But the iPhone 4 still sells best". It is a phone from last year, there's been tons of great phones since then. Thinner, with better screens, faster speed and some great ui-ideas. And in a year they will be even better. Apple has always been the innovator, the ones who surprise with something new, something never seen before, something that was way beyond their competitors.

Samsung, Blackberry and all those others have been playing catch up eternally, but if Apple just releases a miserable speed bump after 16 (!) months, next year it will be Apple that has to catch up.

Everything points to that, but I can't believe they've screwed up so much, especially not now, that Steve Jobs left. This would have been THE most important keynote in Apple's recent history.

why is everyone seemingly obsessed with a re-design?

Shouldn't it be functionality over form?

It is funny because when iPhone 4 came out and the Antennagate exaggeration was in full swing everybody complained that Apple focuses too much on form and not enough on function.

Now faced with the prospect of a not getting the lopsided tear-drop-shaped iPhone 5 folks are going nuts. I am anxiously waiting the next iPhone tp replace my 3GS, but I am more concerned about the internal enhancements and new features. They can keep the iPhone 4 form factor for call I care -- it is a beautiful phone -- just put a better phone in that shell.

Would I love to see a redesign of some sort? Sure. I love Apple's designs and it would be a treat to get yet another iteration on the iPhone design. However, while the iPhone 5 mockup looks pretty, I can't imagine holding that phone in landscape orientation comfortably given the forehead being thicker than the chin. So a redesign would be cool, but I have never been fully sold on the mockup that is out there.

I will be thrilled if we get a slightly larger screen (say 3.7 inches) just because of my fingers being a bit wider than most.

We're all guessing of course, but another possibility is, it may offer another explain why Apple has been trying to stop Samsung so hard over the recent months.
Perhaps, and this may be wrong, we will see on Tuesday, Apple don't have anything really new to compete against Samsung with this year, hence rather than just being better, they are trying to stop the competition.

If they were bringing out a totally brand new jaw dropping model, then they would not be so very concerned about Samsung and the old iPhone4 similarity issues as they see it.

Seriously I've now got 3 friends I work with who have all in recent weeks bought Galaxy S2 phones and they totally blow me away for what they do and how lightning fast they are. And the screen is totally gorgeous also. If I was going for a new phone now I'd be going for one.

Unless of course Apple really do have something mind blowing to launch next week and not just a tweaked iPhone4 with the same sized screen.

Why the hell would they put the dual core A5 processor and 1gb of ram in a the current form factor? Doesn't make sense with a tiny screen, it's a waste of horse power. There must be a new design being announced on Tuesday.

Right, so if this confirms that the N90A is the 8GB iPhone 4, and the white N94 part that looked identical to the iPhone 4 is the iPhone 4S, where is the iPhone 5? Apple won't be releasing 3 phone models, so either the iPhone 4S is the 5th Gen iPhone or the leaked N94 part was a test version of the iPhone 5 for employee testing in public, ie: iPhone 5 housed in iPhone 4 body.

Who knows, lol.

You said yourself that you love Apple's designs. So do you really think their design will be identical to the mock ups we have seen?

I definitely don't think so! I love the mock ups, but I know Apple will be able to blow those designs out of the water. And do you really think they would make a phone that would be so uncomfortable to hold?

Like I have been saying this whole time, if they release a redesigned phone, the tear drop will be EXTREMELY minimal and will not be awkward to hold. I don't get why everyone automatically assumes a tear drop shaped phone would be so awkward! Do they forget that something has the ability to be subtle?

And face it, no matter what they release, you will love it and you will buy it.

What interests me about all this is these cases. Where did they really come from?

There was an article circulating in the blogs a few days ago about how a prototype (could have been one of several prototypes) was smuggled out of a factory, software erased, and measured to make the cases.

You keep saying that, but we're not all sheep. Apple can do wrong and the wallet is the best tool to vote with - as evidenced by a large number of posters in this thread.

Maybe you should read what I said again.

I did not say "everyone." I was referring to one person. Another reason I said that is because he said he is anxiously awaiting a replacement for his 3GS, just like I am. So me saying that makes perfect sense.

I also take it you don't remember how there were a lot of people who didn't like the design of the iPhone 4 when that whole ordeal happened. Then after it came out, look at how many people went out and bought it.

You should read more.

Exact same can be said of the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Only that also feels flimsy and awkward due to being so thin near the bottom.

It's square but it's so narrow it feels like there's nothing to grip.

It is important to remember that the feel of a phone is completely subjective.

I personally prefer round edges to sharp edges. My hand curves, it is not shaped to conform to a box.
