Seriously this is a joke, they easily could have got this out for June, but because ios5 wasn't ready it would look like even less of an upgrade over the iphone4 then it is
Customers managed to understand that the 3G was low end and the 3GS was high end before. I can't see the problem?

iOS5, apparently.....although i refuse to believe that Apple, the most valuable company in the world, with the best engineers, software developers in the world, can take 16 months PLUS to develop iOS5.
There is more to it, this is Apple we are talking about, there is more to it than a 4S, im sure of it.
If not, this will be the most disappointed i have been being an Apple fan.
I think it still makes sense. Al Gore said that Apple would announce 2 new iPhones. This phone here is not a new iPhone, it's just the iPhone 4. When the 4 was announced, it was just 1 phone being announced and the old 3GS became the cheap model. So if Apple is truely going to announce 2 new phones, their line up could look like this:

- iPhone 4: the regular model, nothing new, 8GB, cheapest model. Only mentioned.
- iPhone 4S: the same exterior, A5 processor, maybe 8MP camera, same price as the current iPhone 4. Newly announced.
- iPhone 5: different exterior, larger screen, A5 processor, 8MP camera, more RAM, more expensive than current iPhone 4. Newly announced.

People here are overreacting over a bunch of rumours...seems like this forum is flooded with 12 year olds!
Apple will release ONE iPhone with the current iPhone 4 becoming the "cheaper" option.
There will be no redesign....there will be an iPhone 4S with better camera etc etc.
Lots of OTT people here dreaming of an aluminium back bigger screen iPhone 5 will have egg all over their faces come Tuesday.

He didn't say anything like that. He said there were "new phones", but that can also mean that there's just one new type being announced out and many of that type being produced.
And he did mean different types: There's the N90A and the iPhone 4s, so Al Gore's statement doesn't mean ******.
I agree that this is a joke after 16months. But I reckon if they'd released this 4S phone back in June people would have accepted it a lot better than they are going to accept it now after 16months. The much faster processor and better camera would have been enough for most people back in june, but now we want more.
There is no way I'm getting locked into a two year contract and 500 bucks for a faster processor and better camera. Unfortunately that's the only choice I have in Japan with Softbank being the only Telco supplying it at the moment. Let's see if AU offer better terms in the new year.
Bigger screen or no dice for me.
I've used iOS 5 since Beta 1, and the latest build is far more fluid than 4.3.5 ... a far superior experience in terms of UI animation quality. The Notification Center is a welcome addition.
And in other news, stop whinging.

Not right up to date with memory prices, but surely the cheap iPhone 4 will have 16GB. People need room for all those paid apps and songs available now.

I've said all along there will be a 4S, if I'm wrong I will have no shame in admitting I was wrong, look I'd love a new redesign too, but I'm trying to be rational here, and most evidence points to just a 4S. What annoyed me was for so many months people called the "4S" name stupid and when I even postulated the name I was made fun of.

To clarify... I want a white iphone with the latest tech in a 4 shape.
An iphone 5 would likely change the screen size, but have the latest tech
a low end iphone 4 would have worse tech and likely be only availible in black
Thus in this scenario I am choosing between two things that I don't want.
If the 4s is the top phone this year, I get everything I want... 4 shape, white, best tech availible
Sounds good since 3GS is also currently $49. MR Front page also has this setup predicted too.

A crappy spec bump you say? Yeah, GPU being 8x faster, a dual core CPU with double the RAM, and a much better camera is a crappy spec bump. *sigh*

Please can we stop this now, everyone now knows the 4S is happening. The only question is will there be an iPhone 5 alongside it, which in my opinion is very unlikely.
I have been absolutely hoping for a redesign, mostly for a larger screen (as have many) however, looking at my iPhone 4 right now and imagining it with an A5 processor, 8 Megapixel Camera, and Voice Assistant I can live with that. Especially since I'll be leaving Korea in November after a year and be going back to sprint, The IPhone 4S on Sprint will be more than enough to compete with Sprint's current Android offerings in all but screen size. Screen size isn't THAT much of a deal breaker for me. I've previously owned the Evo 4G and it was an admittedly fantastic device, but in my opinion the IPhone 4 and IOS5 will be the BEST Eco-system 1-2 punch still on the market.
I mean honestly, once you think about it what ARE the huge flaws with the current chassis design besides the fragile glass backing? And even that for me hasn't been a problem since I dropped my first one and wised up and got a case for my second one. The design IS unique and unlike any on the market. You simply CANNOT mistake an iPhone for any other device on the market, and that is indeed a valuable asset for Apple.

You know Windows Phone 7 is such a good alternative to the iPhone. It's the only phone that can even compete with the iPhone in terms of quality. Sadly though, I won't be switching. Reason? It's the ecosystem, once you're used to the iPhone ecosystem it's very hard to switch.
screen size just isn't that important to me. At the moment I use a 3.7" Nexus one, and the screen is fine, but I wouldn't want it to be any bigger.
Big screens on phones = bigger phones. And I for one would prefer to keep the balance of size/functionality on a smart phone close to where it already is.
If apple could squeeze a slightly larger screen into the existing iphone footprint, then so be it. But I would not want the iPhone's footprint to get any larger than it already is.
You may say that but as far as I can remember weeks ago an A5 processor was found on the N94, and now of course we know the N94 is the "4S", maybe there will be a "5" alongside it, but the "4S" will definitely have an A5 processor.

iOS experience? What is the iOS experience? What is it that makes iOS a better deal?
I know I prefer iOS over other systems, but I can't really say why.

Although I think they should release an all new design for Tim cooks first product introduction I can see why they would want to keep the same iPhone 4 design. Having to release a new design every 12 months would be too difficult for the designers and manufacturers. They would have to rethink production every year which is alot of hassle.
As for the naming of the iPhone itself Apple should just get rid of the numbers and call it by year i.e. iPhone 2011 then iPhone 2012. Much simpler and it won't matter what os number is on the phone.

My take would be the iPhone 4S being the new low end a iPhone 4 modified to improve on the antenna problems while keeping a lot of old (cheaper, and well produced / overproduced) components in it.
The 4S becoming the new low end (free with subsidized contract) but more importantly allowing Apple (like they hinted in the last conference call) to cater to emerging countries.
This is by their own opinion where android is making most of its advances (proven by the stats indicating that in the USA iPhone 3GS & 4 are the models most sold).
iPhone 5 just to bury the competition and keep their parts providers so busy they'll have a hard time selling the same parts to competitors.

I think I'm just annoyed that this is all they can/have decided to do... never owned an iphone, was waiting for this one, but it's hard to get excited about buying a last years model... the camera on the old 4 is phenomenal as it is, how much better can it be, and honestly I can barely tell the difference between my son's old ipad and my ipad 2, chip wise.... I don't play video games. I'm going to wait and see how well icloud works before I do anything...
