I don't know why people are talking about the absence of a sim card slot on the icon when there is a more obvious absence of iOS 5 icons on the screen of the 'new' icon

LOTs of people hate the square design. A redesign would also tend to include the larger screen that most people want. Simple.

I'm one of those people.

Just because they're calling the "4S" doesn't mean it's going to be a minor update. I'm expecting an 8mp camera, an A5 processor, and 1GB of memory. I'm wishing for a 64GB model, too. (I think that's likely).

Everything you described is just a minor update. So it has a slightly better camera and is slightly faster; big deal, still minor update. The change from 3G to 3GS was significantly more than that.

The excuse Apple will use will likely be the new Assistant feature - they will probably downplay the external design and the minor specs update, and claim that the Assistant feature will revolutionize the world. Those updating from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S will be said to be updating from a device without an Assistant to a device with one.

Which, IMO, is rubbish. I doubt the Assistant will be even slightly useful. I'll gladly keep my 3GS, as I didn't upgrade to the iPhone 4 since I don't like the boxed design. Here's to hoping the iPhone to be released on 2012 (iPhone 5? iPhone 6? iPhone 4GS?) will go back to the curved design of the 3GS.

I do also want to point out that Apple's security must be crazy tight for their next phone after the snafu with the iPhone 4... so, who knows, maybe they've tied up the loose ends and there really will be an "iPhone 5" announced.

What? The update from 3G to 3GS was significantly LESS than that. It was just slightly faster with the same camera?

I think you're right, and that's what we'll see on Tuesday. However, we know that Apple is always working pretty far out and my guess is that they've been working on the next design for quite a while... it's just not ready yet. I have a feeling when they do release the next design (5, 6?), it will be a hell of an update. If this is what happens, I'll be holding on to my iPhone 4. I actually don't have as much of an upgrade itch with the 4 compared to the 3GS. It's still doing the job for me quite well.

Everyone is grasping for straws if they think Apple is going to introduce a redesigned iPhone this year. It will only be a spec bump.

Excuse me?

The 3GS had completely revamped internals, including way faster CPU and GPU with OpenGL ES 2, twice the RAM, better battery and the better cam with auto-focus and video capability.

WAY bigger update than the 3G compared to the first iPhone.

sssssssTOP IT!

This has to be fake. There is no way that in 14 months Apple makes an iPhone 4S and not the iPhone 5. A lot of people would be disappointed and might just get the samsung galaxy S2. Apple is competitive and I must say that this is the only year that an Apple even might be a surprise. So just wait 2 more days for the new iPhone. And wasn't there a post 3 days ago about the "iPhone 5" cases being leaked? Seriously the rumors are the same everyday nothing new and it just goes back and forth between the 4S and the 5.

Still on blackberry... therefore I'm trolling everywhere for the past few weeks. I agree with another poster who said that when one makes the switch, they want something that's new in more ways than just internal specs. Sucks if I had to jump into a 2 year contract now and next year apple releases a redesign as I'd feel I'm always a year behind the latest major change.

Anyone see this link? CBW? Not sure how valid it is but I didn't catch it on MacRumors or maybe I wasn't looking in the right places.

Since I do not have an ipad 2 what apps use dual core? "If" this is a processor and ram upgrade only I would like to have some reassurance that dual core is a real benefit with ios. From all the talk it appears that ios apps run just fine on a single core. I was hoping for a 4 inch display to make me jump ship from my 4.3 inch droid x. I really don't want to go down to 3.5 inch especially since 1280x720 HD 4.3 to 4.5 inch android phones are almost here.
Trying to keep an open mind because seeing a new android superphone released every 2 weeks is overboard but seeing Apple take 16 months to upgrade their phone is just as bad. A one year cycle was great since I upgrade once a year. But 16 months with 5 months of rumors is taking me over the edge. Can't wait for Tuesday to come and go.

Don't expect the 4S to be a "minor" spec bump just because we're not getting a case redesign.
You think people want a case redesign for the sake of it? No. A case redesign is what would come with a larger screen. That's what people are talking about when they mention a redesign. Not just a redesign for the sake of it.

For me personally, the case itself doesn't have to even be redesigned. I just want a screen size increase. even if it's slight.

As long as the 4S has a bigger screen then I'm fine, but no, just a 4S after 16 months is just BS.

Agreed, I think everyone would be a little more accepting of a 4S if it had been released in the normal 12 month time frame. But 16 months after the fact is just unacceptable. Not likely even for Apple, though this news is bleak. UGGH, please don't disappoint us Apple!

Because some of us HATE the current square, easy to break glass back, design. The feel of the 3G/3GS is much nicer in the hand. What was proposed as the possible iPhone 5 looked at least interesting.

Funny way to show how "EVERYBODY" Hates it. Sales are still strong.

I wonder what would happen if "Everybody" Loved it??

There is a lot more evidence to support the iPhone 4S than the iPhone 5. Period

Is there any possibility iPhone 4S might not actually be the final marketing name? Okay, it appears in the beta but that may be for purely internal testing purposes? It surely would not take long, or hardly any work at all to change those references to iPhone 5 or some other name between announcement and actual public release of the latest iTunes version.

It's also pretty clear the images are placeholders, this isn't to say the phone won't look like an iPhone 4, but the icons are not correct.

It's not unacceptable, consumers won't care. Apple will market it very well and it well sell very well, as it usually does. Most people want a phone that works..

What interests me about all this is these cases. Where did they really come from?

Simple, a Prototype of some sort got leaked.

Companies create tons of prototypes in the process of creating and upgrading a product. The case manufacturers got hold of the "Wrong" Set of specs and they took a gamble. They seem to have lost. The truth is that "Nobody" outside of the Apple Manufacturing Chain knows.

Those here that make assertions about this are just wishful thinking, nothing more.

I've been saying this from the start. It is Apple's business model to reserve the current generation iPhone (in this case, iPhone 4) as the low end offering for the refresh. There has been ample evidence for a "4S" label and, as I have been saying, Apple would only use the "S" for the new, improved next generation phone (not for a low-end offering). The exact thing was done with 3G and 3GS. I am not sure how anyone could have thought that Apple would use something labeled "4S" as its low-end offering. It doesn't make sense. No redesigned iPhone until 2012. That's just the way it is- for better or worse.

also most user who want to update are on 3G or 3GS phones. For them it's a huge update to get the 4GS. If you have already a 4G then the update is lame. But at the same time you are likely still under contract.

The killer selling point this year is not some new little feature or some artsy design. It's how much an unlocked version of the phone will cost.

This is possibly one of the oddest things I've seen posted on MacRumors.

Interesting, but odd.

Everybody posts odd stuff here...

Most of the speculation and wishful thinking I read here, I find odd!!

I talk in real terms from the industry I know, and for the past 26+ years has been Photography!! I happen to have been a Photographer for the Motorola Government Systems and Electronics Group, the Group that created and developed and eventually put in Orbit the Iridium Satellite Phone System.

I started there in 92, within weeks I shot my first Prototype of the Iridium handset. Boy, when it finally came out, it was nothing like the final unit!!

That is what happens in the "REAL" World with Prototypes.

A case redesign doesn't necessarily signify a radically new model. The iPhone 3G was a minor update to the original iPhone. All it added was GPS, a revised case, camera, and 3G data capabilities. It used the exact processor that the original iPhone used.

The 3GS significantly upgraded the processor, improved the camera, added video recording, bumped the storage, and improved its connectivity to the 3G network. It was actually a much larger upgrade than the iPhone to iPhone 3G was. It just kept the same case.

Don't expect the 4S to be a "minor" spec bump just because we're not getting a case redesign.

Precisely.

And for all those making asumptions of public opinion over screen size, I have to say that the only place that I hear people talking about wanting a bigger screen is on tech forums.

Amongst my peers, its not an issue. Are we indicative of a winder mindset? perhaps, but its unlikely, as is the likelyhood of forum coments to be representative of global opinion.

Why don't we just wait untill Tuesday?

So this is what they have been upto for a year and a half? seriously?

Who knows??

Why don't you contact Apple?? Nobody outside of Apple can give you a "True" response to this question.

And most importantly, does it really matter. The unit will be announced Tuesday and it will sell like Hotcakes, so....???
