No surprise. If Apple makes inroads in the fashion market, this would give them an advantage that won't be so easy for others to copy. The watch makers would need to reach out to Google (not an easy proposition), while the other tech companies would be harder pressed to strike deals with the fashion world than Apple.

It won't matter. The fashion industry is fickle. Apple's going to wake up one morning and suddenly rich French people won't care about their watch anymore. What will their fashion-minded head of retail do then? Find different rich French models?

If they put the same amount of effort into the Apple Watch's battery life as they are on celebrity marketing, the Apple Watch will last a week on a single charge.

Really good point.
I mean... this is a single article about a single "celebrity" model that you had never heard of prior to today, who may or may not be in an advertisement for the Apple Watch.
Geez oh golly, I sure with that Apple would give this amount of incredible attention to their watch battery instead!

/sarcasm

That's more or less my point. Apple is trying to make the modern iteration of the calculator watch "fashionable". Are there enough of those people that otherwise wouldn't wear calculator watch out there to make calculator watch a success this time around? There either are or Apple is turning the The Apple Store into The Sharper Image 2.0.

I would kill for a watch that looks like this.

So lame.

But it's the only way to sell this thing. No one who's into tech is excited about it, because it's not an exciting tech product.

So what do you do?

You go to Paris Fashion Week and to fashion models and you try to make this ugly thing into a must have fashion accessory for desperate Vogue readers who buy fake Armani hand bags.

Exactly. Not a likely product to appeal to slobs

I doubt it, there are many battery companies spending big trying to make batteries have increased density.

What other similarly screened watch has good battery life?

based on the aWatch subforum participation

Yuck!!!!!!!!!
Gross. *shudder*
I desperately hope that this is the last time I hear anybody refer to Apple Watch as "aWatch".
That's just horrible. That (unbelievably) is even worse & tacky sounding than the equally lazy moniker "iTouch" that people used to call the iPod Touch.

Styles change, but brands tend to endure.

Sadly because you humans (;)) fall for the trick of believing that owning something owned by a "star" will make you like him or her. The product itself become secondary.

meh.. you're marketed to also.. you're a target.. you buy stuff because advertisements tell you to.. you(;)) fall for the tricks too..

just different tricks but it doesn't help anything to make fun of people that fall for the tricks you're not susceptible to..

Yeah bulky watch with huge knob,

this place confuses me.. so many complaints are about apple being too focused on making things small and slim etc.. then the smallest thing they make comes out and it's deemed bulky / huge

The user interface is a confusing mess and it has to be controlled by constantly switching between 5 different input methods! Touchscreen, press touchscreen, a button, a little scroll wheel, clicking on the scroll wheel... this is insane!

Compared to the iPhone -

1) Touchscreen
2) Press Touchscreen
3) Home Button
4) Press Home Button
5) Power Button
6) Hold Power Button
7) Volume Button...

:D:D

Everything i listed is for PRIMARY input on the watch, you have to constantly switch between ALL of those.

That is NOT like the iPhone at all.

If they spent as much on mac development as they paid U2 for that album, Microsoft would be bankrupt.

Let me help you out. A box sitting on my desk can be big. A device strapped to my wrist has to be small. Less confused?

regular folks, every day people from different cultures and countries and stop thinking that people are going to buy things because a super model is attached to it.

The last fifty or more years of advertising would speak to the contrary. ;)

So lame.

I actually think that Apple is on to something that every other smartwatch maker is missing, here.

See, think back to the early smartphone days. Who did the manufacturers go after? Business users and techies. Then Apple came along and aimed at the wider market, the average user, and it was a roaring success.

Apple could easily do the same thing again with the Apple watch. See, the average person doesn't really care for the 'tech' approach. They want something stylish and cool and fashionable, that just happens to be really good at doing cool stuff as well and making their lives easier.

If Apple manages to put their finger on the pulse of making the above happen, then they will have a huge success on their hands. The market is ripe for the smartwatch to take off - people are interested, they just want something that makes them want to wear a watch again.

Yes, because we know, people getting tired of wearing a type of Nike shoes, stopped them buying other Nike shoes... Or any other shoes ;-).

People don't seem to understand that something can look good and be functional. That's basically Apple's mantra for 30 years.

This kind of manufactured celebrity crap (I assume she's a celebrity if she's being discussed so casually?) should be beneath apple and just pushes me even further away from getting an apple watch. Wait, will it now be hipster and counter culture to use an analouge watch? Damn it...

The whole definition of hipster is wearing old discarded stuff (or things that purports to be), think boho chic, so you''d already be a hipster if you wear a top of the line Casio 1980s Casio watch, A 1984 Mac, been bag chairs and 1950s Pinball machine, all on display at the same time.

Hipsters would buy new copies of 1950s to 1970s counterculture clothes that didn't even look good even they were in somewhat "in".

I wonder if the runway models will be seen with iwatch on one hand and iPhone in the other as they parade :)

As stated by others , it's an iPhone accessory.

Don't understand the backlash.
How is different from Samsung using Lebron James to sell their Galaxy note?
This is great marketing by apple to reach women and fashion minded instagramming types.

The genius in iWatch is not the watch so much as the fasihion link as mechanism that will draw owners to switch or upgrade watches on stylistic reasons along with our usual technological upgrades. Users of the watch may eventually collect several to accommodate dressing casual or evening, for instance. Or to go with predominate color schemes.

How do you know that? From what I saw, you can either use the standard touch screen features or use the crown. There is nothing stopping you from using your fingers to do things the same way you do them with the iPhone. It would just be a lot better for precision stuff to use the crown.Different things warrant different solutions, no one will use a watch like a phone and basic optimization calls for a solution that provides the best possible UI. I suspect most will use the crown to some degree. Try scrolling up and down for a reminder (time) with your fingers on a tiny screen. It would be much better to do those sort of precision movements with the crown.
