As i said, place a G5 next to the new iMac and your instantly struck by how outdated and unrefined the earlier model is - despite it being awesome when it was released. For those that don't own one, just google the G5 and you'll be surprised by how ungainly it now looks. Subtle changes like the chin etc. have really enhanced the design. Same for the iPhone.

this is an interesting point but I'm not sure the size of the iPhone allows for changes in design akin to the G5 vs iMac. other than some of the small suggestions (different material, different backing), the phone really needs to DO certain things and not LOOK a certain way. The key to the phone is the fact that the device mostly disappears -- it's all about the software. I think all the various designs of the iPod suggest a change is quite possible, but personally i'm not convinced it will happen.

Power Mac G5 and later Power Macs are the ones usually referred to in that topic. not iMacs.

I say that's some cheap iPhone clone part.....there's no way Apple is gonna make the bezel bigger....and keep the screen the same size the same time...

I could see the current phone getting a half inch shorter and a quarter inch narrower, by trimming the bezel. Bigger? No. The screen size will surely not change - more precisely, the pixel count will remain 320 wide and 480 high. Tons of software depends on 320x480. Perhaps dots per inch could change but I don't see that happening either.

As if Apple never gave preference to form over function :D

Whatever about the aesthetics, the screen badly needs changing. Changing resolution isn't going to be a problem for Dev as the iPad will show.

Maybe the small increase in height is required to accomodate the mechanical aspects of an elegant hinge or snap-in device to accomodate a removable battery?

If you've ever shot video in a room that has multiple windows, there are reflective surfaces that you can put on the outside of the window that reduce the light that comes into the room, therefore, making it possible to shoot film of someone standing in frotn of a window without turning them into a silhouette. I'm guessing, if this part is real (BIG if) then the reflective surface is covering a camera so that if you are holding the camera with your sun to your back, you wont lose your face in the image. Just a thought. Probably wrong.

Wow. Deifnitely a stretch given that they wont even give up a .03 flash for the existing camera.

Answer to what the unknown metal piece is

Actually I have the answer to what the unknown metal piece is. It's Apple's anti bitching technology for all of the whiners who didn't get what they demanded from any new design.:D

Dunno if someone has mentioned this before, but the iPhone will change its resolution to the now common in other phones - 480x800.

That would explain the slight increase in size and, I'm guessing here, but the screen will be a tiny bit bigger as well.

I'm looking at mine now (typing on it) and wondering if they could add 1/4" to each corner diagonally, making for a full 4" diagonal display. Now if they could add the resolution of 800 by 480 to a display that size, it could be really great.

"Looks like the actual dimensions are the same as the current iPhone - just that there will be no silver bezel.

Instead, it'll form a Unibody like construction."

Completely agree... Also the home button will be on the mainboard so cheaper to replace when screen damaged and longer meantime between failure, fewer ribbon cables to screen.

Is that a hole in the lcd? would it be completely mad to suggest that Apple have put a circular portion of the LCD onto mainboard too and utilised that patent for a camera that is built into the LCD pixels and has autofocus math on each pixel sensor. The mirror for distance triangulation. cheaper to build this technology into a portion of the LCD than all of it? Naw not enough pixel density for a camera but could be used as sensor for non-touch gestures, same patent tech? OR more likely its not a hole...

I recon this is the real deal unibody slimmer iphone front with no bezle

Actually, that sounds like a really interesting idea!

I don't think it will be 4", because I think the screen will be the same or very similar to what the new Android phones are using, a 3.7" (0.2" bigger) one with 480x800. It just seems it's the new "standard". Besides, judging by the picture, I don't see a 0.5" increase.

I usually don't call fake and ignore these things, but this looks way too cheap and just in general looks fake. Anyone else agree? I mean seriously, Apple won't make a longer iphone. It's big enough already.

Agreed.

and it's hard to make any judgements from out of China. I've visited last month and they have a knack on making iphone clones. Heck I've seen a mini iphone lookalike!

With all these fakes around, it's different to really assess what parts are real parts being considered by apple or not or by a clone maker for another lookalike.

I’d sure love an iSight camera. I want that in my phone more than my iPad!

This could just be some knock-off part, but if it’s real and the design becomes iPad-like (without the current bulging sides) then maybe the actual overall length isn’t much greater: more glass, less plastic bulge = a little bit longer but also narrower?

I’ll be sorry to see the glossy black back go, if it does: it’s amazingly scratch-resistant and matches the front nicely.

A strip of rubber down each side wouldn’t hurt though.

That's how the over-hyping starts, with people like you having unrealistic expectations.

I didn't know I was so influential. ;)

I'd imagine my expectations - to expect disappointment - not to be an issue. I was just pointing out that a 4inch 800x480 is by no means a technical obstacle.
