With a top of the line smartphone. And the same place it leaves previous generation iPhone owners every year a new iPhone is released. Technology is moving FAST, and Apple knows this, and will do what it takes to stay ahead of the curve.

October -> June isn't a year.

It would be a first for Apple to change the cycle significantly such that devices are released every 6-8 months and not 12-ish.

Apple wouldn't let out a two tone back into production.. just not their style and it would have steve rolling in his grave. It has to be simple and elegant, this is not that.

The headphone jack on the bottom makes the most sense from a usability standpoint.

When I listen to music and use my iPhone 4 at the same time, the cord gets in the way of the screen sometimes because of the fact that the headphone jack is at the top. Put the headphone jack on the bottom, and this is no longer an issue.
I don't agree. How about when I want to use it as an iPod and listen to my music and Ihave my phone in my pocket. That would mean either of two solutions.

1. You have the iPhone in the right way around with your headphones losing a few inches of length by going back up the iPhone and out of your pocket and your iPhone not balancing well in your pocket.

2. You put your iPhone inside your pocket upside down.

Sweet. Thirty five grand on a 2012 and I'm going to have to give BMW another $100 to make my new iPhone work with my car. Cannot win.

Awwww bless, some people cant win can they. Like having the money to buy a 35k car alone isnt enough then moaning about $100 for a new connector.

Bless :(

Headphone jack on the bottom = lame.

Not a good design for my every day use. I keep my phone in my coat pocket. Unless the UI rotates, I'm looking at an upside down phone while using headphones, or twisting and eventually shorting out the ($45) cable on them.

Why does everyone say things like "Steve would not approve of this" or "it would have him rolling in his grave"? He probably put a large amounts of input into this phone before his passing.

I do too, its easier to get it out and twist your hand and you have the screen facing toward you. Your the one doing it wrong! lol.

Article says that the visual difference is bc of finish, not materials, so I figured two-toned would be an okay way to describe it.
GAH! Ill wait to see what it actually looks like, but if its actually looks that bad (to me) Ill be buying a gelaskin cover to hide that backing

One of the comments Jobs made before he passed was.... Don't ask what would Steve have done.

Where is the antenna in this prototype? Is it on the outside, and will the bare metal of the antenna be touching the skin of the person holding it (like on the iPhone 4 and 4S)?

Yes, and yes and yes.

If you need more info:

Right next to Waldo!

Incredibly un-apple

This looks off with the rest of their products to me. The separate materials looks ridiculous and I really hope this isn't what I have to look forward to this year...

Personally I think the glass(?) bars on the top and bottom don't look great, hopefully we will get some better pictures.

Not really, if you put your iPhone in your pocket with the screen facing your skin then theirs no need to take it out by rotating it or flipping it upside down.

You're all the same, iPhone 4 got leaked:

Can't be Apple, can't possibly be this ugly, this isn't Apple.

iPhone 4 gets release, OMG I AM GETTING ONE

After two years of nearly the same design and they release this? I really hope not. I would think they would be capable to changing the design of the phone significantly other than a taller screen and smaller dock.

Change the design to what end... change for the sake of change?

Look at other products.... cars - how much do car designs change year to year? About the only thing that changes constantly is women's fashion.

Can I ask this:

What design, or technical benefit would/could Apple get from having a dual finish/material backing?

I wonder what that little hole is in between the camera and the flash?

EDIT: Maybe they relocated the ambient noise mic since the headphone jack is on the bottom now, and I believe they were on the same ribbon cable before...?

A rough prototype would not make it out of the Apple campus. Leaks usually happen at a supplier in China and it is way beyond prototype at that point.

Production of parts has already begun.

I'm pretty sure that's the case here. Did you notice the long pinky nail on the hand holding the rear shell of the case? I know that some Chinese men keep just their pinky nails long for various purposes.
