Classic Mac Startup Chime Not Present in New MacBook Pros

Apple please introduce the "desperate Apple fan boy mode" in settings:
Turns screen black and white, 640x480, swaps all icons to mac OS 7 style, re-introduces the chime noise and the happy apple logo thing, increases boot up time with 10 minutes, re-introduces the watch instead of the spinning wheel or whatever, and turns off WiFi.

So the rest of us can focus on the future.

Apple definitely has some different minds now...
  • Ruining of the Finder icon in the Dock
  • That meaningless Siri icon.
  • The terrible App Store design...
  • Spending time changing System Preference icons without actually fixing real issues like a non-functioning "Show All" button when you're already on the Show All view.
  • The user-UNfriendly Get Info window... changing permissions on a document can sometimes be painful with those small controls.
just to mention a few.

Two things about Finder that bug me to no end are — the window size and position is never remembered... I need to resize *every* time that I open a new Finder window. And the right-side preview column always opens. I close it, and then it opens again for the next window. So annoying. But maybe it's just my computer.

RIP, startup chime... you will be missed. The Mac is slowly losing its unique personality.

For real? What is next? They wanna change the Apple logo? Sounds like they want to get rid of all that Steve put his heart into. Wow.

I was defending Tim for years. When everybody wanted Jonny to be the new CEO i was like Tim is the right man. He has the long term vision Steve had. How wrong I was. Tim has his own vision. Its Tims Apple now. I like some things he changed. The most things he changed I hate.

Tim seems to be focused on business partnerships and not user experiences, despite claiming to care about the latter.

Apple's famous for ditching old stuff. Some people need to get a grip. With SSDs, you'll know your Mac is booting up because it'll be done and ready to use in 3 seconds. Steve Jobs famously said "If you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else, not dwell on it too long. Just figure out what's next". I bet he would have included the startup chime in that. Macs should be spaceships, not museums. I'm glad the people at Apple are willing to ruthlessly seek the future. I'd rather they misstep than not step.

Same thing with removing the glowing Apple logo. I don't agree with all the bedwetting about thinness at the expense of battery, etc. I totally understand *those* arguments though. Adding ANY thickness to a screen for the sake of making an Apple logo glow? For what? Nostalgia? Cut it. The metal one looks much better anyway.

I bet most in here never would have made the iTunes commercials because "something something music nowadays". The world moves on and Apple can either be the ones clinging to the past and telling kids how cool they were or they can find ruthless futurists and keep plowing forward.

Personally, I'd prefer Apple didn't get rid of the SD slot. I'd weigh that in my buy or not buy decision (for the record, I would buy this MBP, but my work bought me a brand new laptop just last year, so I can't justify). It's gorgeous and the Touch Bar looks like an awesome replacement for the function keys. Let's not overthink it.

Apple has done away with the traditional startup chime on its new MacBook Pro lineup because the machines automatically power on when the lid is opened.

Pingie.com was first to note the removal of the sound from Apple's new 13-inch and 15-inch laptops - both the models featuring Apple's new Touch Bar (as well as the 13-inch version without a Bar) automatically boot when opened or when connected to a power source if the battery is dead, so the sound has apparently been deemed surplus to requirements.

The iconic chiming startup sound was originally made to indicate that diagnostic tests have found no hardware or software issues. A similar sound has accompanied almost every Mac boot sequence since 1991 and its most recent F-sharp chord incarnation was first used in the iMac G3.

A C major chord was originally recorded by Apple engineer Jim Reekes using a Korg keyboard, and what most people hear these days is a pitch-shifted version of the sound made by the Macintosh Quadra family of professional computers, first released in 1991.

According to the book The Sonic Boom: How Sound Transforms the Way We Think, Feel, and Buy, Reekes' "earconic" sound came out of a desire to replace the older tritone boot sound heard on earlier Macs. Reekes wanted to use a more meditative sound to indicate the Mac had passed its initial Power On Self Test (POST) checks, a sound he later called a "palate cleanser for the ears".

According to Reekes, Apple executives didn't particularly like the sound, but it managed to make the final code that was shipped in all Quadra 700 Macs. Allegedly, Steve Jobs himself prevented any further alteration of the sound when he came back to Apple in 1996.

The Mac startup sound can also be heard in 2008 Disney-Pixar movie WALL*E. When the titular robot character has reached 100 percent power after positioning his solar array, the booting chime goes off.

Apple has updated its support documents to reflect the change. As noted previously, Apple has also removed the backlit Apple logo on new MacBook Pro models.

That's sad

Uh, this falls into the category of "so what?" for me. So it doesn't make a noise, it just starts up and is nearly instantly ready to use. Not sure how the charming little noise is more important than the utility in being ready to work sooner for some but people are different. As far as the logo lighting up, I have a lot of trouble seeing it when I'm using my MacBook. So I guess I won't miss that. But I may not look as cool when people enter the coffee shop I suppose. I'm just too cool to care about being cool I guess.

As far as the power extension cord that's fine by me. Never used mine anyway as it was fairly clunky to fumble with.

In the end when I order my new MacBook Pro guess I'll just have to be content with a faster, more capable machine with some new usability via the touch panel, more storage, better screen, lighter weight, thinner design and simplified port arrangement. Yep, that's enough for me. I'm always amazed when young people are so resistant to change.

Good riddance! I've always hated that god-awful sound and have sought various ways to get rid of it over the years (since my first Mac in 1997).

Sadly, El Capitan made it a seemingly impossible task. So I'm more than happy to hear this news.

No more glowing logo. No more extension cord with a multi-thousand dollar laptop. No more control over when my computer boots up.

And now, no more startup chime.

It's official. Apple is dead to me.

Tim Cook, please resign. If you really care about the survival of the magic and heart and soul of the Apple that Steve Jobs created, you need to resign. You are killing everything that ever made Apple special.
I feel done with their laptops for sure, in fact, I've already ordered their previous 15" model (CTO max spec). That's probably going to be last one I get and it feels kinda sad, but also exciting because hey there are some very decent Windows laptops now - ones with line-in and everything!

Before they die to me I want to see where they take the iMac. I was going to buy one regardless of the update... but there wasn't one. And if we get a super lame iMac like the MBP then. Well.

Thing is I love my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch. They do what they're supposed to! Shaaaaame.

Oh sure. Most definitely you'll abandon the Mac for a windows machine. I can only imagine the moaning and groaning that move will produce. If anyone here who threatens to abandon the mac because the apple logo no longer shines into the night, etc, I'll eat my hat and post a youtube video of it.

Even though I didn't like that chime, it was a part of Apple since the beginning. This marks the end of the beginning. RIP Apple.

People are whining for the sake of whining. Almost comical for an outsider
No people are stating their opinions and dissatisfaction with this move by Apple. The "gong" has long been part of this whole Mac "experience." No it's not a huge issue, much like the removal of the glowing Apple logo on the lids of MacBooks. But it is a disappointment for many nonetheless.

THANK YOU! It was a significant thing for ALL mac computers. It's a symbolic thing. I don't get these new members.
