I think it's a good idea, but I enjoy taking pictures of random things all the time so I'd be happy if EVERYTHING had a camera on it lol.

However, I'll never buy one of these iPods. I don't like the new square design and if I'm getting something that small I'd just buy a shuffle.

Can't they just cut a hole in the clip, or make the clip half the size?
Seriously, I doubt the camera would force the removal of the clip. I don't think the clip will get removed, as it's extremely useful and Apple promotes it a lot too. This is just a prototype, who knows what it's going to turn out to be like.

As for the camera, I think it's a great idea. You can use it as a spy camera or anything. It's awesome due to its small size. As for quality, it's probably still better than traditional phone cameras (I mean not smartphones).

Personally I think the redesigned nano was dumb. Thing is way too small for a touchscreen to begin with. A camera in this thing makes no sense really. Luckily my 6th gen was free otherwise I'd be pretty pissed right about now :)

Back me up here.

the previous shot showed that rear case from the front, thus showing the interior of the device

Unless the case isn't supposed to transmit light from inside through the Apple logo on the rear, then this can't be real. I'm assuming this is the intent, what would be the purpose of such a large logo appearing on the interior of the case where no one will see it.

Unless the photo itself is mirrored, the Apple logo from the outside rear of the case would appear backward. Am I wrong?

The clip is clearly there and there's a cut out in the clip for the lens to shoot through.

I don't know how clear it is, but it's possible that they simple machined a whole to allow for the camera lens. It looks like the clip might actually be, or might be covered by, a protective plastic adhesive layer.

size matters

that's weird... i can't imagine trying to use something of that form factor as a camera... a lot of people had a hard time not covering the camera while shooting video on the previous nano

Agree 100%! the damn thing is hard to use right now. I don't dare touch it without the head phone cable in my teeth as a safety cable!!!

Introducing Smart Clips, which attach magnetically to your iPod Nano for fast removal when you need to take a video!

It seems pretty clear to me that there is just a peel-off plastic protection sheet on the back of the case, not a clip.

The original photo (not shown in this post but linked to in the article) from last month showed the inside of the case.

This new photo shows the outside of the case, with the Apple logo on it. It's not translucent, and there is no Apple logo on the inside of the case.

Sad that the tiny ipod nano will have a better camera than the ipad.

Support for movies? Now that would make me take a second look.

Until they release something that gets FM radio and can play movies I'm not buying.

I get the impression Apple are running out of ideas for the Nano, seems every year they are adding/ removing the same features. Let me guess, next gen restores the camera and video playback, Steve will push this as a USP and all new feature.

...

It will have a $20 smart clip that is held in place with magnets and stays attatched to your shirt so you can just pull the nano off and snap your photo and then magnet it back on

Thats not a camera, its likely a 'clip connection'. I'm sure the nano will come with a clip, but you'll be able to screw it off. It will make the profile lower if you want to attach via other means. For example as a lower profile watch band or to a necklace.

I'm really hoping they also integrate the dual mode screen Apple patented last year. The screen was a hybrid LCD / epaper screen. The epaper part could show a clock, or current album, all the time and not effect battery life.

I hope you are right on both counts. It looks like a screw to me as well, not a camera. I LOVE my Nano(6g) and would love nothing more than improvements to battery life; which an hybrid screen would most defiantly aid to battery life. But it must have a clip and personally I want a permanent clip. I wear mine all day.

Never fails....two days after I finally break down and buy a nano 6G, they leak news about the next (updated) model.

Maybe I should see what I can do about getting info about the 2011 MacBook Air. :)

the camera on there looks retarded, plus there is now way the pictures will look nice the camera cant be that good of quality. and the clip i thought was a great thing, maby they will find a way to put it on and not obstruct the cameras vision. or they could package it with a clip that comes off or attaches to the sides. whatever the case im sure it will be a minor bump because if they want to stick to the design they have now they cant add too much.

They took the camera out, it shoudl be back in!

I see the usefulness of the camera but not for all users. Still, is a great feature to have or better yet "to bring back" to name a few, any time you are not carrying the phone, like when you are doing sports, and you like to save an image or movie of anything.

I doubt that the clip will be taken out, it is just ridiculous. Apple has amazing designers to resolve any design issues without taking away form factor (Oh wait they did it last time the iPod Nano changed).... well, most of the time :D and iPod Nano with no clip just defies the main functionality of it "portability" A modified clip should fit just fine!

New iPod Nano shoudl also have Bluetooth (for syncing), WiFi (so you can send your pics to Facebook on the spot) and must be sweat proof!

.. and the Shuffle should be faced out, who uses only 4g of music noways?

I have a 6th gen. I like it. The only thing that really needs to be improved is the battery which is *not* anywhere close to a 24 hour battery (to be fair, my 3rd gen spoiled me, it had the best battery of the nanos I've owned, 3rd, 5th, and 6th. I could go a very long time without charging it). The touch screen is so much easier to deal with than the tiny wheel on the 5th gen imho (The third gen's wheel was decent but I still prefer touch screen I think).

And i would so much rather have a clip than a camera. I had a camera on the 5th gen nano (my least favorite nano honestly. The wheel was too thin and awkward to use if you just needed to move down one click and it was long and you had to make sure it sat the right way in your pocket or it would stick into you. It's saving feature was the remote but my 6th gen supports that. And honestly the features people keep bitching they got rid of I never used, screen was too small anyways. Only when I was bored and just wanted to be astounded at something so small doing something did I ever bother with video playback or videotaping with it. If my third gen supported the remote I'd have probably kept it instead. Now that I have a sixth gen that my mom bought me, I wish I had sold the fifth gen instead of the third gen :( ). It was neat as a gimmick but the only time I ever used it was when I was bored and being amused by having a video camera on something so tiny, it never actually was useful (unlike the camera on my iphone).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

Magnets are the new clip.

Looks like some people are ignoring this. This is the reason. They can put more of those tiny magnets they're in love with now and sell you all new accessories that will magnetic lock the nano in place.

I think if the camera dies get put onto the ipod nano people will still buy one but more will probably look to getting an iPod Touch. Hoping in mind that they put a better camera abd the radio onto it. The nano is great device but i think the iPod Touch steals a lot of its thunder.

A clip could still be placed onto the nano. Maybe a thinner clip as seen on the shuffle or previous gen shuffles. Or, have the clip going in a different direction with the hinge under the camera. This would still allow the user to use the camera and clip it without blocking the camera. It wouldn't make much difference to the form of the nano either.
