iPhone X Combined | iPhone X Yellow / Blue shifted Display?

My conclusion is that I don't think that the serial number will really make any difference on the phone production quality.

This. I had a space gray that was a DNP serial number and the display was noticeably yellow. Decided to switch to silver this weekend. My new unit is a DNR serial and the screen is much better. Keep in mind that the factory identifier on the serial number tells you where the final phone was assembled. It doesn't tell you anything about which factory the display panel (or any of the other components) was sourced from.

1st and without any comparison, I saw my screen warm and then coming slightly pinkish and then gradually blueish when turning the phone on the right or on the left looking at it via those different angles.

2nd when comparing my iPhone X to my previous iPhone 7+ then I can see clearly my iPhone 7+ much whiter when looking at white background or by looking at the setting screen. Also before that I have never thought that my iPhone7+ has really a cool color since it has warmer color than wife one. Note that I feel my iPhone X brighter than my previous iPhone 7+

3rd when I have compared my iPhone X with a couple of iPhone X from the Apple Store display then mine looks much brighter for sure (for checking I had always turned off true tone and set brightness to max but they were less bright than mine). At the same time the display models were less warm than mine. I have indeed noticed that the color shifting is almost always slightly different from one iPhone X to another.

I experienced your same feeling both for the 7+/X comparison and going to an AS for a comparison. My unit is a bit warmer but definitly less dull e more brighter.

Please consider that the store model have a different firmware that probably effects the display calibration.

First of all, the serial number has nothing to do with good/bad screens. They all vary! Every year it's the same anecdotal story when 2 people say, "oh, I have a phone from XYZ and it's way better than factory ABC" and people start chasing those magical unicorns. These things are very subjective. Moreover, it depends on the lighting a lot and many other conditions as well.
Second of all, in terms of your screen being brighter than the Apple store display models, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but with OLED Apple display models get capped due to the temperature. The device automatically lowers the max brightness and even though Auto Brightness is off it still lowers its max brightness in order to cool off. My phone is also brighter than every single display unit I've compared it to at BB or Apple. So in order to see the actual max brightness of a display unit you would need to turn off the screen and maybe let it cool off for about 5 mins.

Your screen pictures look much better (less dull and whiter) than the display units. Even thought this is always difficult to get an accurate view through pictures.

No I don’t. I have been using the new one for the last few days and the difference is amazing. In my office at work my original one would look really dull and yellow under the lights (yet looked fantastic and cool under the lights at the Apple store). This one isn’t nearly as bad. It does still change under different lighting but all my previous iPhones have done that. There is hardly any shift which is good so I am still happy. If it matters the other phones had serial numbers starting with F1 or F2. This one stars with DNP

Seems like true tone is working even after you switch it off, because I noticed several times that my screen was super white and then suddenly shifted to yellow tint :/. Maybe but I can see such a huge difference when TT is on or off.

So with TT off, I can see my screen warm already but with TT on then I can see it super yellowish due to the feature. I was able to read from some members here that TT from the iPhone X is too aggressive compared to the iPhone 8 or iPad Pro

I went to the Apple Store and got the phone replaced. I don't have the first one to compare, but the screen to me looks pretty much the same. Interestingly, I have been comparing my screen with TT ON with a white sheet of paper under different lights... And the screen is a match in almost every situation, except under direct sunlight, when the paper looks completely white and the phone slightly warm.

I'm just going to keep it. I tried playing with the 8+ and after having the X for almost two weeks, it feel prehistoric, so there's no turning back for me and I really don't feel like spending more time on this lottery game.

This is obviously only really noticeable on white/light backgrounds, but it's distracting when reading articles and such.

The pink shift doesn't look as extreme as some of the examples I've seen on here, and it's actually difficult to photograph. But it's definitely there and noticeable by anyone I've shown it to.

The panel lottery seems annoying to me. Apple suggested I take it for a complete refund/exchange, but I don't know any stores that have the phone in stock. Are people who are getting replacements getting new retail units or just swapping for the replacement stock?

And more importantly, am I being too sensitive to this? Should I only really be judging the screen's uniformity based on straight-on angles? Or is it fair to expect it to look uniform when tilted a bit?


edit: I should also say I noticed the pink hue shift around the notch out of the box. Apple aren't doing themselves a lot of favors by making the phone setup screens a uniform white torture test for the screen 😉

Great point you have there. I believe that is what TT is designed for, like reading a book provided any lighting condition.

My hand gets kind of tired holding the X a certain way so that the screen will look decent. I usually just let it slack a bit and deal with the top of the screen shifting pink. Never really had to think about how to hold a phone before, so that's kind of disappointing.

I'm on Verizon and she's on AT&T. But I've long since (2 days) let go of this issue and have learned to enjoy the hell out of this phone. Prior to the X, we both carried the 6S and I never thought to inspect for variances in our devices in the two years we've had them so I checked them a couple of days ago. It was interesting. Her 6S is cooler and mine is warmer. Had no idea and spent the last 2 years enjoying the 6S so lessoned learned.

I have some updates. On my lunch break I decided to go to the Grand Central Apple Store in NYC.
First of all, all the display units that I've seen so far come from factory G6, which makes sense since they have to install a special demo version of iOS on those, I guess.
Also, the hue shift variance is a real deal! I saw two phones that were specifically bad in terms of that pink hue when tilting them. One of them would even stay pink and never shift to blue no matter how hard I tried. My phone is not the best screen I've seen so far but one of them. There was one very good phone that would never show any signs of pink and turn blue instead, which looked pretty nice. Most of them though are just like mine: very slight hint of pink while tilting them before turning blue. Other than that, they are all the same. Should I mention that they all exhibit some signs of uneven brightness? It's normal though and no different from LCD screens on the other iPhones. However, I should say that in terms of overall hue consistency and unifromity the X screen is much better that the LCD iPhone screens. Those are usually more uneven.
In conclusion, I'd say that unless your phone is that super pink like one of the phones I described, just enjoy your phone. They all experience the hue shift, they all exhibit some sort of brightness unevenness, which is the nature of any screen out there. I would not play this lottery knowing that there are some other issues like the green line or bad crackling speakers, etc.

Mine has the same pink hue at the top and borders and it's very noticeable even at slight angles. i really try to enjoy my phone but it's really distracting and very difficult not to see it and to make things worse, my local Apple Store doesn't have any on stock.

I also have to hold my phone at the exact angle to avoid seeing it. And after a while my hand is getting tired too.

I think you are right, I just tried it and seems better, will try it tomorrow in the morning to be sure. I knew this yellow screen issue is somehow releated to software, because sometimes it happens that the screen has normal white color and then suddenly shifts to yellow... hopefully they will fix it

Whoa....that really did make a difference. Screen went from really yellowish and warm, to what I perceive as "normal"

THANK YOU! Doing this, then turning True Tone off again made a big difference for me. Display looks a lot cooler (though still not as cool as the 7). Glad to know it seems to be a software issue for the most part.

One of the main reasons I returned mine. If there was a blue hue at extreme angles, I’d be okay. But the fact that the SLIGHTEST angle shift produced a blue hue bugged the **** out of me.
