Just some numbers.

Just did some calculations on screen size.

The upcoming Galaxy Note 2 is 5.5" which makes it 4.8 x 2.65 = 12.92 inches area assuming 16:9 which is the rumored aspect.

The S3 comes in at 4.8" which results in 4.18 x 2.35 = 9.83 inches screen area.

EDIT: S2 is 4.27" at 3:2 ratio so 3.55 x 2.37 = 8.42 inches

iPhone 5 is 4" and 16:9 making it 3.49 x 1.96 = 6.83 inches area.

iPhone 4/4s is 3.5 diagonal at 3:2 making it 2.9 x 1.94 = 5.65 square inches of display.

So the largest smartphone gives about 13 square inches of screen, the S3 nearly 10", while the iPhone 5 only gives about 7" and the current small screen only about 5 and half inches of display.

Those are not small differences (except between iPhone models). And, if you're concerned about size, just draw the dimensions on a piece of paper and you'll find the MASSIVE Note, really is just size of a mid-sized calculator.

This is why I'm so disappointed. I love using my iPhone, and yes I talk on it, but mainly I read and communicate with it. The screen is important and Apple has dropped the ball where I'm concerned.

Choice?

I really don't like this option for an iPhone. Apple's argument about large screen is valid, it's hard to use the phone with one hand, but maybe some people don't mind that. Not sure why there can't be few options? iPod had different sizes, iMacs did, MacBooks. Why iPhone is limited to one option?

I understand the whole philosophy of Apple's simplicity and design, but the competition will not leave Apple handing out at the top.

I've been using Nexus for two month now, and the only thing that I REALLY love, is THE SCREEN. Apple really can't overlook this.

Agreed after seeing the galaxy 3 the iPhone screen does seem very small. To give an idea the entire iPhone 4s fits in the screen of the galaxy 3

...they are not going to be offering a phone comparable to other top of the line smart phones.

iPhone is the best, there are no other top line smart phones. There are a lot of other good phones but none are the best.

... Forcing in the sense that I'd love to stay with Apple if they offered something better than the competition.....

Again, iPhone is the best and superior than all the competitions.

So, based on your two statements above, you must stay with iPhone, no buts about it.

The only reason why your swaying to cheaper commodity phone is because of all that bells and whistles, which is nothing but a way to confuse the consumer and only works with ignorant buyers. Apple's iPhone is designed perfectly to be fully functional for everyone's day to day business.

Apple takes care of me, my wants, and my future :apple:, others just want to empty your pocket for every penny you got by selling you trash!

I want it to EXCITE me. I'm at five years of living with iOS, now, and it's comfortable and familiar and useful and...

...unexciting. Ordinary. Commonplace.

It's just a fact of life for a successful mature product.

I want what Cook promised - I want my mind blow - unless they're holding something amazing back, this phone ain't gonna do it.

This is the real issue. People have gotten spoiled (and lazy) and want their gadgets to fill some emptiness in their lives. Learn to find joy in all aspects of life, and you won't be so devastated when a piece of hardware no longer gives you thrills and chills.

These leaks are happening because the manufacturing facilities Apple uses are not owned by Apple, not run by Apple employees. The Chinese workers have no vested interest in Apple as a company, no allegiance. To be honest, I'm not even sure if setting up an Apple-owned facility in China would stop it. They have a culture there of not respecting copyright.

The only way to stop the massive amount of leaks is to bring manufacturing back to America under Apple-owned roofs.

As long as there are media sources offering money for these "product leaks", they're going to happen no matter where the parts are produced.

Would have to disagree...the iPhone is not even 4g yet....it will be but apple behind slightly on some things. It's having the option to do things that make the droid attractive to others. Good analogy...

Take a salt shaker....apple going to tell you it's salt...trust me its going to be salt....however in a doid the salt shaker might be red, green or blue. It might contain salt, pepper, or different spices. You can make it however you want. However with apple it will always be salt

Do I have to explain what a metaphor is?

I guess so. Forcing, by which I mean they are not going to be offering a phone comparable to other top of the line smart phones. Forcing in the sense that I'd love to stay with Apple if they offered something better than the competition.....

Someone should. Saying Apple is forcing you to leave is not a metaphor. It is hyperbole.

Well the first iPad didn't have camera or a high-res display, so essentially they had no choice but to add both. The iPhone had a camera in the first model and the iPhone 4 gained a front camera and high res display. Now that it already has stuff like that, internals are the only things they can really revamp (aside from improving the camera optics, etc).

I agree this is why to me what comes next is more important in my opinion to the iPhone 5 then if the screen is bigger. I expect a true game changer feature with next iPhone.

Would love to see this design But thinner and 4 inch screen

Basically a mouse with a touch screen

Let's see:
  • New screen with several new technologies possible including in-cell, IGZO and gorilla glass 2.
  • New housing with full metal back. 1.2mm thinner.
  • New battery with a different chemistry.
  • LTE
  • First non refresh iOS device with 32nm processor. All rumors say more than just an A5 die shrink.
  • New dock connector.
  • New headphone jack location.
  • FaceTime camera moved.
  • Thinner top and bottom bezels.
  • New smaller SIM standard.
  • Possible NFC.
  • Possible 1GB RAM.

This is the most drastic generational change since it launched. I don't know what else you guys are expecting, and neither do you. Everyone fails to come up with an answer as to what would constitute a drastic change except a huge screen. Well, that's a user preference thing. Not everyone is going to be receptive to a 4.7" screen coming from a 3.5" screen so get over that idea.

How about:

  • Solar Panel Charging - Either behind the screen or around the back glass panel - not possible on the leaked unibody design.
  • Induction Charging - OTA syncing. No need for ports - Would be nice no?
  • Possible NFC? it better have it.

Anyway, the iPhone 5 is just over hyped. Get a SGSIII, Amazing phone. Apple better step up if they want to keep the questionable crwon they have.

Cheers!

It's funny. People ask for a larger screen, yet complain when they finally add one. Apple can't win.

----------

Don't forget it being 7.6mm - thinner than rivals like the S3.

The only problem is when you hold Nexus or S3 in your hand, it fits so nice. Then taking iPhone feels so unnatural. A device that is being held on users' hand for 95% of the time should be designed for it. Apple is really full of their own philosophy sometimes. Yes, iMac, MacBook's shapes are great, but they're not being held in people's hands.

Apple always says that "specs are not what sets us apart from competitors," but then they come out and make such a big deal about how thin iPhone 4 was.

What I would love for Apple to do is to drop their ego and make most comfortable iPhone to hold.

These are sane and rational arguments that can not be refuted. Well done Cousin Vinny.

I agree with you about the screen. I personally would enjoy a over 4 inch screen that is edge to edge Or as close as it can get to edge to edge with no home screen. I think there are plenty of people that don't want to see anymore of a change then what there offering. That said I think they need to make sure thus phone has enough capabilities to make you forget about this issue. I think the screen size is specific for a feature there putting in the phone.

after seeing the front panel i am somewhat skeptical as to how this thing will look put together...........looks like there is a bezel around the edge of the screen. I assumed it was going to be flush with the metal casing, but now im not so sure....

hmmm Apple, you better wow me.

NFC is going to be pushed heavily and will be supported by all the big players...that's not a small deal. In a couple years we won't be swiping debit cards, just placing our phones up to some reader.

And it will have LTE...that's a big deal if you have coverage.

But, and I'm sorry I keep harping on it, the phone will not be a modern sized smartphone! Apple could make one, but they're not for some reason....my guess is they want a big difference between iPad mini and the iPhone. The latest flagship phones from competitors are still well below the size of paperback book, but they're in the same league. If I can read a book comfortably on my phone (as you can with the new large phones) the tablet might not be necessary.

iPhone is the best, there are no other top line smart phones.

That is certainly not a universal opinion.

Personally, I've switched from iPhone to S3, and in every meaningful way, it has resulted in an improved experience.

YMMV, etc.

thats not what i mean tho. my sister for example can set different led colors for different nots. e. g. fb blinks blue, sms green etc. that way u know what u got without turning the phone on. the one on the iphone is pointless bc it only flashs once u get the text and doesnt blink til u read it

Yeah reading's hard.

It never, ever included "the latest of the latest" though.

You are funny! How about the multi-touch interface and all of the tech that everyone else has been copying including android. You know the latest and greatest things that took two years to compete with and the only way they could do so then was to steal it. You are really joking though right?

Would have to disagree...the iPhone is not even 4g yet....it will be but apple behind slightly on some things.

First, there are no true 4G phones or network out there. The so called 4G LTE does not implement any of the 4G technology standards. You are being fooled to believing that its a 4G by having them place the label "4G in front of the LTE. It is nothing but 3G upgrade to provide speed boost. They really should call it 3G MAX.
So, instead of making iPhones to support fake 4G network with over cost fake 4G chips with limited 4G LTE network and chips that just eat up your battery life immediately, Apple chooses to continue to build something that will work for everyone and get the best value for the consumer without complicating its usage and not confusing them with 3G, 4G LTE crap.

Second, why would I drive anything else when I have a Lamborghini :apple:.

ttexxan - This design will be superb for the iPhone (i think girls around the world will love it) :) :) Like Whyte MacBook in past.

i'm technical engineer and designer - all what i can say about new rumored iPhone - jahhh..., it is Bad, it is so bad - i'm surprised about this fact.

1. Technically - New design give me cheap feeling!
Dock side is so badly designed with dots for speaker and mic that give my eyes rolling - Apple has no money to pay for excelent design?
This looks like come from student hands - first try in design skills!

2. New dock also give a cheap feeling - Apple is about different, now it try to be same as others? Samsung make bigger screens that even this phone not fit in your pocket normally, and it looks like Apple not make New things, but start to coppy others - no more ideas or what?

3. Phones jack on dock "bottom" side of the new rumored iPhone - nonsense!

I hope these rumors are Joke - i really hope! Otherwise, if it is true - i will buy new iPhone 4s to hold it as great passion of latest design of Apple "old great Apple" :)
