Im just hoping it will be wider too, even a fraction wider as in this pic. Image

It's not wider in that picture. It's just taller, and therefore closer to the camera lens. It is also shot at an angle, which introduces a perspective vanishing point. (see how you can see the white face on the iPhone 5?).

I don't know that there are any photos so far the indicate a wider phone.

I promise frank, this is the next iPhone. You have to understand that this will likely be the BIGGEST consumer product launch in history, so they have to make millions and millions of these. Along with the shrinking size of these types of devices, it's completely understandable that some of the 30-60 pieces of the multi-million production will leak. It's impossible to do otherwise unless they move back to the original iPhone strategy of announcing 6 months early, showing just a prototype off on stage, and THEN putting in the order for 22 million...

I doubt it'll be the biggest launch in history. The iPhone has become common (available even on low cost prepaid!), hasn't changed too much in years, and people have begun to switch to other platforms. And look at the Macbook Pros, with the exception of the Retina one they look EXACTLY the same as they did 4 years ago. Some will argue it's in the insides that counts but what about innovating the WHOLE product. Look at Apple's past releases. The original iMac was insanely different for the time (an all in one PC?!). And did Apple stop there? No they released a totally different iMac a few years later and then again. And now we're stuck with the same designs for years and years. They are getting lazy and resting on their laurels.

As much as I like Apple, they are getting dangerously lazy with their designs and the "wow factor." I think the iPad 1 was the last thing they released where people were blown away. The iPhones are the same old same old these days. I'll admit the Retina MBP is pretty sweet but then you bring into question making a computer that is hard to repair and non-upgradable at all.

Plus Apple continues to make a more closed system. And I mean now it's a hassle to "switch" platforms whether it be phone or computer if you're an Apple user.

Another company got dangerously stagnant in it's design and its' RIM (makers of Blackberry). And while RIM is struggling to stay alive they are working on a new generation of phones and mobile OSes...with features that make iPhone look like it's 20 years old. Here's the thing. RIM probably sees in Apple what many people saw in RIM past few years: A company who figures they don't have to change much because people will buy it. I imagine RIM is banking on this lack of perceived innovation on Apple's part to come out swinging next year.

My two cents: The iPhone 5 will be a lower selling launch than the original 4 and if those leaks are accurate people will start to notice the lack of innovation.

----------

There is no such thing as "the best smartphone". It's a subjective thing. Let's not get arrogant or complacent and start slagging off the competition. That just turns people away from Apple. As long as it looks great, works great and is an all-round cracking product I would be happy.

I agree. iPhone has some pluses but I mean I switched quickly from iPhone to a Blackberry Bold 9930 and hardly regret it. The "best" is different to everyone and for me the iPhone wasn't useful to me and was disappointing after all the hype I heard for years.

I bet you are wrong on this. Think about it: The 4 and 4S were the 2 biggest selling products in Apple's history. The 5 (or whatever) will be the same basic factor but sleeker, thinner and sexier.

The extra screen size, and no one has really addressed this...I'm 100% betting this has a purpose. Like maybe a running ticker across the top/newsfeed/solcial media feed/ something or other. Its not arbitrary for the sake of being 16:9. The 5 will have iOS6 features not revealed as they would pertain to hardware possibly not on the 4/4S. There are more bells and whistles than what has been seen...mark my words.

The 5 will trump the 4S in sales.

The 5 will beat the 4S, but I doubt it will beat the 4. The iPhone 4 was the biggest advancement in the iPhone line.

so now macrumors is calling it the new iphone :D

so confused lol

Complete 'iPhone 5' Front Panel and 4" Screen Photos

No.

And I mean now it's a hassle to "switch" platforms whether it be phone or computer if you're an Apple user.

Duh? Maybe they should put a 75% off Galaxy S3 coupon in the box in case you want to switch? No offense but thats the least thought out thing I've read all day. Apple doesn't build datacenters and work content deals for streaming music and movies so people can easily jump ship....its called an "ECOSYSTEM" and the better it is, the more entrenched you are in it, the less likely you'll leave.

I think you are drinking the Apple-flavored Kool-Aid a bit too much....

Let's see:
  • New screen with several new technologies possible including in-cell, IGZO and gorilla glass 2.

Gorilla Glass 2 is an upgrade and so is the new screen
  • New housing with full metal back. 1.2mm thinner.
1.2 mm thinner means nothing. Nobody can tell tell the difference

  • New battery with a different chemistry.
Who cares what the battery chemistry is? All i care about is talk time.
  • LTE
    About time, Apple
  • First non refresh iOS device with 32nm processor. All rumors say more than just an A5 die shrink.
  • New dock connector.
    This is an upgrade how?

  • New headphone jack location.
This is a revolutionary feature, how?
  • FaceTime camera moved.
It moved 9 mm to the left and 5 mm up. This passes as a feature?

  • Thinner top and bottom bezels.
    huh?
  • New smaller SIM standard.
Doesn't affect me... when was the last time someone cared what their SIM card looked like?

  • Possible NFC.
    Unlikely
  • Possible 1GB RAM.
We will see.....

This is the most drastic generational change since it launched. I don't know what else you guys are expecting, and neither do you. Everyone fails to come up with an answer as to what would constitute a drastic change except a huge screen. Well, that's a user preference thing. Not everyone is going to be receptive to a 4.7" screen coming from a 3.5" screen so get over that idea.

I doubt it'll be the biggest launch in history.

I believe people have noticed some time ago, that iOS is nothing to write home about, is not going anywhere, and that the UI of the Apple phone is not that great, and certainly nothing new .

It also happens to be the worst thing for making calls , which is a bit annoying, in a phone .

This is true and I don't think your average iPhone customer cares what the phone looks like or what features it has because they will line up to buy it regardless. I have said before that Apple could add a new color and a couple of features to the current iPhone 4S call it the new iPhone 4GS and people would still be lining up days early for it and they would have record sales. Apple knows no matter what they do or don't do they can't lose.

Why "4GS"? That name doesn't make sense.

I don't think we're going to see as much innovation anymore from Apple, now the most valuable company in the world. Just guessing here, but Tim Cook was probably trained to ride Apple's success and just keep improving the products carefully. I'm not saying that Apple is going to become worse or make lower-quality products or take unfair advantage of customers, but I doubt we will see any more drastic innovation.

Proof and nothing but the facts!
Top Satisfied Cell Phone/Smartphone Companies (2012)

83 – Apple (iPhone).
75 – Nokia, LG and HTC.
73 -Motorola.
71 – Samsung.
69 – BlackBerry/RIM.

Need I say more, I continue to back my statement!

A quick point that you made no statements to "back up" other than a personal one.
Welcome friend :apple:, I promise you, you wont be disappointed.
You're "facts" have no value. I hate to explain this, but an easy shoot down would be that 17% of iPhone users were not satisfied. How could you guarantee more than this mystery study. (see: rhetorical question)

––––––––––

iPhone is the best, there are no other top line smart phones. There are a lot of other good phones but none are the best.

Again, iPhone is the best and superior than all the competitions.

So, based on your two statements above, you must stay with iPhone, no buts about it.

The only reason why your swaying to cheaper commodity phone is because of all that bells and whistles, which is nothing but a way to confuse the consumer and only works with ignorant buyers. Apple's iPhone is designed perfectly to be fully functional for everyone's day to day business.

Apple takes care of me, my wants, and my future :apple:, others just want to empty your pocket for every penny you got by selling you trash!

Second, why would I drive anything else when I have a Lamborghini :apple:.

And more, "iPhones Most Reliable, According to Survey Participants"

Okay, lets say this super vehicle is made by Apple as in iCar

I have to believe that this person is an incredible troll with sentiments like these and the name "chaosconan". The only thing the gives me hesitation is his join date and how dedicated this fool seems to be.

I think you are drinking the Apple-flavored Kool-Aid a bit too much....

He's just marking all of the technical changes. But I don't see 4" screen in there

I don't care if the iPhone does not have any wild new features on it. I actually don't even want LTE. Given the current technology available, there is no reason to change the visible design of the iPhone. I'd rather see Apple just improve what they have for a while and fix some things, especially iCloud. Oh, and the smaller dock connector is better because it frees up space on the inside.

His statement about other companies selling trash is true in some cases. The main reason I trust Apple is that they put a lot of effort into their products. Just go look at home control systems like Crestron or AMX if you want examples of companies that do not put effort into their products. I've seen a lot of big bugs in Windows too, especially Vista. I like how Apple focuses on software more than anything.

As a UK user, I just hope that any LTE function can be disabled and so enjoy greater battery life.

As a 200MB data plan user (from the US), I agree.

The iPhone 5 is different in pretty much every way than the iPhone 4 and 4S except for the design of the shell.

I disagree with you about not selling more than the 4, but I do agree with you on this. I was a little deflated when I saw the first shots of the phone, as I want to see something really breakthrough this time around. But the reality is that my 4 is the most amazing phone I have ever had....and its changed the way I compute and communicate. With the exception of my very first computer (a Performa PPC 6100/60 in 1993), the iPhone has been the most significant piece of technology I have ever owned.

As much as everyone wants Apple to stun the world with a phone design no one has thought of yet (but will soon copy), the reality is that evolution can be as important, if not more so than revolution. Adding LTE and whatever else they have up their sleeve will make this another hit. And also, lets be honest, phones are limited in form factor by their use. That samsung phone thats big enough to hang on the wall....its ludicrous, but it is useful. I see the point in a bigger screen on a phone, and I believe Samsung will find the point of diminishing returns as its getting an even larger screen this time around.

I don't get the yeehaw about the new dock connector, smaller connectors are in existance now its called micro usb ports... but apple being apple they "upgrade" to a new port that has no universal support what so ever and just breaks support for existing products.

It wouldnt suprise me if they didnt make a conversion adapter either just so people have to buy new accessories, it wouldnt be the first time... remember the disabling of standard video out cables with an authentication chip in the 2007 clasic?

I'm not too excited about the iphone this year to be honest unless battery life is improved and they finally offer something higher than 64gb (cant tell me that flash prices havent dropped in the last 3 years there is no reason why 128gb can't be at the same price point as 64gb)I am not biting.

Though the general public will eat it up because the media hypes up Apple's products like the next coming of christ.

1. The iPhone 5's 4" screen breaks the support for most existing products anyway, so changing the Dock Connector would hardly do any damage.

2. The whole point of the Dock Connector is that it's supposed to be better than micro USB.

Its still looking ugly. I'm hoping and praying this isn't the final product .

Making the iPhone taller and keeping the width just makes it look goofy.

Did I press someone's buttons today? You could've been a little bit nicer.:)

A. VERY FEW people care about the new iPhone or a new Android phone. The average person doesn't come on rumor sites and read up on the latest gadget.

B. QUESTION: How do you know what goes on in Apple's, Samsung's, or Motorola's labs? How do you know Motorola isn't beta testing 20 Android devices right now? Answer: YOU DON'T.

Try again.

honestly my initial comment was not meant to be rude but to point out why that was a poor and unrealistic comparison

A. The iPhone is an insanely popular device by any standard, and I get tired of over hearing on a daily basis anyone from a 50 year old receptionist to a non English speaking janitor trying to tell someone else about the newest iPhone coming out next month. (usually with incorrect rumors/info) The interest in any 1 particular android device prior to launch is incomparable

B. I specifically said "any particular android phone" not all 50 that i am sure are currently in production.

with each iPhone launch Apple has to manufacture millions of units before launch so they can meet the crazy demand for that 1 new device (making it very hard to keep secret and prevent leaked parts), while no single android model (like you compared it to) has to be manufactured by samsung/motorola in the same huge quantities that the iPhone does prior to launch because they do not sell any where near as many of that 1 device (combined yes... android phones could be compared by production numbers, but you compared the secrecy of one particular android device prior to launch)

it was a poor comparison so get over it

Speaking from a marketing standpoint, Apple can keep fueling hype for the iPhone as long as they add features that have long been available on other phones. LTE is the feature this time, but it's not one that I will care about in the near future.

I don't see any reason for Apple to revolutionize the iPhone line until newer technology is available. Remember, Apple puts existing technology together. They can't keep making different designs with the same parts unless they want goofy styles. Once it is possible, maybe we will see something like those concept designs for the iPhone 5 some day.

Steve would have never allowed this, and after Tim saying he was doubling down on security, i seriously don't think this will be the new iPhone at all, we will all be amazed on Sep 12th.

I don't see why people have a problem with the new phone, I like it, it's edgy and I think it looks good once I hold it in my hand. The keyboard right now is perfect for me to type, and I don't mind it being the same size as it is now, and whilst typing on the screen such as on this reply on my iPhone, I will be able to see more of the web page when the keyboard has poped up.

I think the design has changed, they're not using a whole new design but refining the design, I don't see why they should design an entire new case if this one works so well, the same could be said for the MacBook. I don't mind if it looks similar, it still looks better then all the other phones out in the market at the moment.

I really think you'll have to hold this phone in your hand to like it, it's far too early to judge, even if they're high resolution images, nothing will justify the phone until you actually hold it into your hand.

Furthermore, I'm expecting the inside of the phone to be the biggest game changer, the design is already as nice as I want it to be, so I want to really see some new kit in there.

The amount of leaks is getting ridiculous.

What's really ridiculous are the critical comments that end something like "Looks like I'm going to have to switch to Android" all because of baseless rumors and speculation. These types are either A) incredibly stupid, or more likely B) shills posting FUD and getting paid for it.

Steve would have never allowed this, and after Tim saying he was doubling down on security, i seriously don't think this will be the new iPhone at all, we will all be amazed on Sep 12th.

They can never stopping this. If Steve in all factory watching all people's 24 hours he may stopping but then he going be busy man

The 5 will beat the 4S, but I doubt it will beat the 4.

Didn't Apple already say the 4S was their best selling iPhone?

And considering the iPhone 5 will launch into a larger global market, I have no doubt it will be the best selling iPhone.

One last thing, we know the iPhone has a much higher brand loyalty and customer retention than brand X phones. All those 3G, 4 and 4S will flock to iPhone 5 in droves.

In short, the only limitation will be Apple's ability to make them, not soft demand.

This is an accurate statement. I didn't upgrade my 3GS to the 4S because I was so disappointed that the design was the same as the 4. Yeah the insides were much better, but not enough to make me take out my wallet.

It became very evident the iPhone's design is "stagnant" on my recent trip to Scandinavia. Samsung phones were EVERYWHERE in the stores, front and center, while the single iPhone was tucked away in the corner. All of my relatives had Android phones, and I have to say, after spending some time with them, it became QUITE clear that Apple's OS is dull as well. Even the way Android's swipe protection looks/works is better.

Also, Samsung's phones were sleeker, sexier, and I found myself secretly hoping that the new iPhone looks more like theirs. They look more contemporary and modern.

I realize my comments may offend people, and believe me, it bothers me I feel this way. But this site is for fanboys, like myself, so it's hard imagine anything else other than Apple products being Number 1.

But Apple needs to wake up. Android is killing them. And it pisses me off because we are living through another Microsoft/Apple era. Apple started red hot and then M$ copied them, outsourced the OS and killed them. As a long-time Apple fan and a stockholder, I'm extremely concerned.
