Best Buys inventory tracker is crap shoot.

I found in New York, all the best buys are essentially not up dating their inventory or either the people answering the phone don't care or don't know the true situation.

the Target inventory is much more up to date. Man i drove all the way to a Jersey store after calling and confirming stock but got there 2 mins too late and watched my ipad being sold out... :(

Remember some best buy show that they have some in stock, but they tell you they dont have any because those in the inventory are reserved. Thats why it show that they have some in stock.

Scalpers = dislike.

Eh. I give it a couple more weeks and the ipad2 will be an easy pick up, then we'll see tons of returns on ipads they can't sell.

Buyers are the ones that should be to blame as well. They're in a sense "Feeding the trolls".

Also the person answering the phone doesn't know and doesn't care; they just say "none available" and get back to work. You must go to the store to find out if any of the stock is available for non-reservation purchase.

Called back. Didn't misunderstand me. For whatever reason it's their managers policy now. They can hold for 30 minutes but that's all. Can't get there until 9ish and they only have 3 16GB verizon.

boo, that stinks! what state are you in? wonder if that's a specific manager's decision...it doesn't seem a smart one, if someone's willing to pay you up front why would you turn that down? weird, and sorry. :(

I've tried 3 times so far to pay over the phone so they would hold an iPad for me at Best Buy and they've all told me they can't do it and the system won't allow them to. I'm not driving an hour there without a guarantee they'll have one so I guess I'll wait until I happen to luck into one.

that's so weird. now i'm wondering if i just got lucky. i'm in north carolina, i wonder if that makes a difference...we're always a little slow... ;)

Thank you!

This thread definitely helped me a lot! I ordered from the Apple online store Sunday after launch and was looking at a 4 week waiting period. I kept checking the Target links and calling Best Buys until yesterday I found the exact model I wanted (AT&T 32GB). I kept flip flopping between colors until I decided that if I found it I would get whatever color was in stock, they're both beautiful. The Best Buy in Williamsburg, VA had many yesterday and in both colors.

I love my new White 32GB AT&T iPad! Thanks to the OP, I dont have to wait until April for Apple to ship me one!

Thanks!

Thanks to the OP, i finally got a hold of an ipad 2. I live in WNC and had been calling the local best buys and they kept telling me all the 16 gig wifi ipad 2's were sold out. I had read on here some best buys were doing reservations, so i asked when i called and they bluntly said "NO". So i was resigned to just wait it out until the ipads were readily available everywhere. But before I left work i checked all the inventories and saw that a Best Buy 45 minutes away had had ipads showing as "in stock" all day. So i call the store and ask if they have an 16 gig wifi ipad 2's and the guy said " We sure do. Do you want me to hold you one?" i almost fell out of my seat. I said "uh....sure". I didn't have to make a deposit, he just took my name and number down and in an hour i was purchasing it.

Thank you OP. BTW, i my ipad 2 is white, lol. :D:apple:

Thanks OP!! Finally got one today. Although it almost didn't happen. I am in NYC and they are especially difficult to find. I have a deposit down since day after launch at BB but they haven't called yet so I've been watching the Target tracker. Finally have a morning off to go early. Saw there were some 64GB ATT at one of the Brooklyn stores so I grabbed my wallet and took off. Got there, they had it, rang it up, handed them my credit card and they asked for ID. I forgot my license at home. UGH. Told them that I don't have ID and that it can't be a condition for sale as per your merchant agreement. They balked at that even though it is true. Asked them to hold it for me so I could run and grab cash. They agreed to hold it for a half hour. Ran across the street and thankfully a branch of the bank I use (HSBC) was right there. Made a withdrawal and ran back. They didn't hold it. Asked if there were any more, said she thought only 32 GB but would look. She found another 64GB but in black instead of white, I'll take it! Syncing now after I called AMEX to complain about Target. I hate stores that want ID for a CC even though it violates their merchant agreement.

wow, good job for sticking up for yourself! They probably werent expecting someone to bring up the merchant agreement of the store.

I hate when stores don't ask for a picture ID with a credit card. It means they don't care if it is yours or not.

Yeah the store manager was not expecting it but he stood firm and wouldn't complete the sale. I didn't want to start shouting so I asked him to hold it while i went to get cash. After I completed the cash transaction I informed him that I would be letting AMEX know that he broke their agreement. And I did. AMEX wasn't happy when I spoke to them. They had me fill out some forms and said they will investigate and get back to me.

Is it me or can't we trust the Walmart info? The stores say they don't have them yet the info says they do. Also many models won' search for example the 64 GB black WIFI only?

Walmart's website said that the Black 32GB WiFi was in stock at the Riverdale, NJ store last night a little after midnight EST. For the last 10 days it had reported Out of Stock everyday. Got up early before the store opened and checked again and the site still listed it as "In Stock." Went to the store, got in 5 mins before they officially opened at 6:55AM and went to the department. After 30+ mins of searching both the website and their inventory, it was reported that 1 unit was in stock and on-hand. However, no associate could locate the device. Waited in store for 1.5hrs as they searched and still nothing, and they offered to call me if they were able to locate it. Got a call 2 hours later that 64GB 3G models had come in, but still no 32GB WiFi only. I've worked in retail and its pretty hard for the "On Hand" count in the store to go up without actual product being scanned into the system. A manager also reported that no iPad 2's whatsoever had been sold since the launch date. Im guessing one of the employees stashed it somewhere and thats why it couldnt be found.

Checked the OP's links for my local BB's and it stated none were available.
Decided to drive over anyway around 7:30PM and they had a few 64GB versions available, for both AT&T and Verizon (Oceanside, CA).

Hmm...similar situtaions here--I wonder of they reported online that the 64GB 3G was in stock?

Really? They appear to have some in stock at locations near me. I'm wondering whether I should go for the 32 or 64. I have a 64 on hold at B&H, but who knows when that's coming in.

where do you live? I would hold off on rushing to the store. try to call and find out.

best of luck everyone. I'm this close to just buying it online off apple site at this point.

Which models?? That's my BB store :)

Any ATT models?

No Just Verizon, but check they might have open box items for 10% or may have returns. Apparently they are telling everyone who calls in that they are sold out to avoid chaos, so drop by that store or LaCantera to see.

Great thread! I used the inventory link to buy my 32 GB iPad today from Target!! They still have a few more in the Lakewood, CO store if anyone lives nearby.

I just walked into the BB Chelsea in NYC and bought a 64gb AT&T black. No preorder.

Walmart availability

Just checked the inventory link for Walmart (96th St. Fishers, IN) and called them and they said they don't have it. Since it was close to my place so went there and the guy checked it in the racks (not the system) and said they don't have it . I was looking for 32GB AT&T, so asked him to check it again because it was showing "In Stock". He checked and said, yes we got it.

So I would suggest go there personally and check with them.
Check the racks yourself, if you can

Edit: The one I got was the last one and just checked the inventory and it now says Out of Stock. Glad inventory link worked.

Thanks a lot for posting it.

I keep getting a blank window when I try to look up Walmart's stock...
