Please let Verizon get the iPhone. And Sprint. Then I will either switch carriers, or maybe AT&T will finally allow tethering because all their iPhone subscribers are leaving.

I haven't kept up, but I don't think sprint even offers tethering. Prob wrong though. Also, I would think ATT will start to offer it seeing VZ does. I've seen some crazier things in my day though...

Apparently you don't read the tech news. There are large areas of very poor AT&T cellular coverage. The most notorious ones are San Francisco and Manhattan.

So yeah, if you live in one of those "bad coverage" areas, you will get lots of dropped calls.

I'm surprised that you've never heard this before. Your profile shows that you joined MacRumors in June 2007. You've honestly never read about AT&T's poor network performance in certain areas? I think every iPhone thread in this bboard has at least 5-10 mentions of it.

umm...

Well lets see... I said they probably have bad coverage where you are (I don't even know if it was you I was talking about).

Do you think Verizon does not have areas with bad coverage as well? I can honestly tell you they to, big old ones i major metropolitan areas.

My point was that cellphone coverage is wholly dependent on where you most use your phone and there is no one superior network for all people or all places.

So you find the network that works best where you will use your phone the most. Verizon sucks where I live, but I don't spend my free time publicly ranting about it because I use AT&T now. For some reason lots of people who do the converse can't stop doing it, and I am not sure why.

Having been around Macrumors for a while I know it has been brought up over and over again that network quality is a locality based thing, and you can't make broad sweeping general statements on overall network quality.

If you think about it over 60 million use AT&T and over 50% of those people use the iPhone, over 80% of AT&T's customers complain, 20% of those complaints are threats of switching. I'd say at minimum 20million would leave for a better network, 20 million is a ballpark I would guess more and I can tell you AT&T expects a lot more than 20.

Well the number to your "claim" has gone down to 19,999,999 cuz I'm stayin. :D

umm...

Well lets see... I said they probably have bad coverage where you are (I don't even know if it was you I was talking about).
No, it wasn't me. You said to someone else that having 4-5 dropped calls per day wasn't normal.

My point that for a lot of AT&T customers, it is normal. I didn't say it's right.

Like you, I believe that you should consider the mobile operator(s) who provides the best service in the places that you frequent the most.

That said, there are a certain number of folks who apparently endure horrific call performance, just so they can have an iPhone. I'm sorry that they have so many problems, but as a shareholder of both AAPL and T, I materially benefit from these people.

I don't own an iPhone myself; I get zero bars of AT&T at home. I'm hoping that iPhone comes to T-Mobile though.

Contracts can change, they can also be breached. I am sure Steve Jobs loves the fact that 12 months ago he stood in front of a crowd and promised tethering in a "few months." Think that Apple is dumb enough to not have performance clauses in a 5 year contract? AT&T's lack of network support may have lost them exclusivity. I am fine with that, though I will probably stay with AT&T as coverage is good in my area and most of the people I call are AT&T.

I can't wait until the day when all the naysayers who say "It'll never happen" are proven wrong. That day will come. It's only a question of when.

People that say the iPhone will never go to another carrier remind me of people who said Apple would never make a phone! Companies can change course of action...they do so all the time. Including Apple who changed from being just a computer company to an MP3 music player maker, to one of the largest retailers of music, to using intel chips, to making a phone, and most recently finally releasing a long talked about tablet device.

Point being, things change. The past should never be used as a sole indicator of what will happen in the future. Just because Apple has not made a non-GSM phone YET, does not mean that they never will. As someone pointed out earlier and as I pointed out yesterday in another thread, Apple went to Verizon first originally. Meaning they would have produced a CDMA phone if that deal had gone through. So clearly, it wasn't an issue for them. Which begs the question, if it wasn't an issue for them, why is it for some of you? LOL

all of you stupid people who claim its so great to talk and surf the net.. whoopie doo, honestly who really cares? When do you actually ever need to do it? never! Besides in this day an age most people text instead of calling

att is a **** company and id rather have a flip phone on verizon then waste my money on ****** service just to have a gadget that every 1 in 5 people have, you people act like the iphone is some luxury item like a gucci purse. It's ridiculous i have seen 12 year olds with iphones its nothing spectacular. If it goes to verizon great then ill get it, if it doesn't then o well, i have gone this far without an iphone im sure i can live. I am not about to downgrade my service because of a phone.

my g/f, her mom, brother, cousin and 2 of my friends have iphones its nothing special all of there service sucks, dropped calls all the time, they don't receive every txt that is sent to them, and they ask me why i dont get one... half of you people on here are pathetic

Comparing Kiwi Fruits and Kumquats

Yes AT&T is in a world of hurt.

They only made 12 billion dollars in 2009.

b8l35k.png

Of course the mighty Verizon, by comparison, made 3 billion dollars in 2009.

Are you aware that Verizon is the new name for Bell Atlantic? (Go to http://www.bellatlantic.net/ for proof).

AT&T is Pacific Bell + BellSouth and a few others.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon and Vodaphone, and is not an independent company.

When you look at AT&T numbers, you see landlines + DSL + Uverse + wireless plus all the other things that the conglomerate is into.

If you look at Verizon, you see Bell Atlantic (and not Verizon Wireless).

So, IMO, your point is not very useful if you're trying to compare AT&T wireless with Verizon Wireless.

Also, why does AT&T wireless suck so badly in so many places if they're making so much money? Shouldn't they be investing in their infrastructure?

Disclaimer: I have PacBell (now AT&T) for landlines and DSL (soon Uverse), but my husband and I have Vzw for our mobiles and 3G laptops because AT&T sucks so badly on the peninsula.

like i said before apple wants to make money and become the most profitable ever and don't want the android beating them out. They don't give a crap what att wants they will do what they HAVE to do to stay in the game to remain the company that everyone else likes to go after. They will produce phones for EVERY carrier..why? because they want the market share and the money

apple knows att its a crappy company, and thats why they want to expand the iphone.

i would laugh my rear end off so hard if its released this summer, and ill laugh even HARDER if apple doesn't even release a new iphone for att, but just creates a cdma one for verizon

This makes zero sense.

Apple would not dump AT&T as a carrier. Apple makes tons of money selling iPhones to AT&T subscribers. The most logical strategy is for Apple to add carriers, not to switch.

Just look at Apple's SEC filings. There is no financial reasons to drop AT&T.

FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME! there is NOT going to be a CDMA iPhone! It's already proven.

Why do all the prototypes have a SIM tray?
Why does Apple and AT&T have a court document stating their exclusivity to end in 2012?
Why did Apple launch the iPad 3G+Wi-Fi with at&t's 3G network?
Why does Apple praise AT&T sooooo MUCH!

why are you guys still going around, wasting your time, doing these false rumors? they're annoying!

all of you stupid people who claim its so great to talk and surf the net.. whoopie doo, honestly who really cares? When do you actually ever need to do it? never! Besides in this day an age most people text instead of calling

LOL!
Actually I do it mostly everyday. When I converse with someone I really don't want to listen to in fact.

Speak for yourself on that one.

Actually Apple did allow tethering availibility and picture texting at the same time, AT&T were the ones who were unable to make it available, one of the reasons Apple dropped them from exclusivity.

The point I made prior to your speech was that no one I know who owns an iphone has a problem with their service or speed. I just find it ironic that those who push VZ (like yourself) "assume" that the service will be seamless, if not superior.

I don't assume, I had a smartphone on Verizon. I managed a nationwide sales team all on Verizon smartphones (except for 2 guys that had bad reception at their homes.) So I don't assume anything, I speak from experience.

If you read what i wrote i never said apple was going to sump att, what is aid was verizon would get the new phone and att would keep running the current 3gs.. again i HIGHLY DOUBT that will happen, but i would die laughing so hard if it did

you are a tool, the document doesn't have a anything set it stone, it explains that its possible the contract is extended, all of you naysayers are all stuck in your little world

ipad may be in place instead of getting a new iphone

Actually the "court document" is just the beginning contract that has already been changed numerous times with different things launching (ie iPhone 3g, 3gs and iPad) the contract was just for the original first gen iPhone. Second Apple doesn't praise AT&T that much AT&T just chooses to pay them so much and allows to make price cuts so Apple users can get data packages at a cheaper cost thus the reasoning behind AT&T getting exclusitivity with the iPad and Verizon let alone anyone else getting it.
You are speaking about things you have just read but obviously you don't know the inside scoop, not many people do Apple is tight-nit about this, but I can guarentee it will be available for more than just one carrier (AT&T) and I can guarentee AT&T will have it in June and the rest will come out at either the end of the year or the beginning of 2011 with their CDMA versions.

It was available worldwide immediately. AT&T was promised in "months." We are still waiting.

Obviously you are probably a child and can't use the phone for what grown ups use it for. Day trading, Research, on hand apps for school, work, relaxation and above all everyone text's, uses their phone and e-mail constantly the iPhone is just one way to have it all all the time.

att is a **** company and id rather have a flip phone on verizon then waste my money

My guess is mommy and daddy wouldn't buy you one for christmas!

Yes it was and then it was removed via CEO of AT&T and when the update for picture messaging came out it was supposed to be including again, but remember that update came out 3 months prior to AT&T allowing us to picture message. We will never get tethering because AT&T isn't going to upgrade their network any time soon, and as long as they say they are working on it dumb people will continuously buy into them.

So lets assume you were a Verizon customer and moved to ATT for the iPhone. You love the phone but aren't entirely satisfied with the network in your area and would love to have the iphone but back on the Verizon network you found more suitable to your needs. You signed a two year contract when the 3G came out just about two years ago now and will be ready to upgrade when the 4G comes out. Unless the Verizon version is announced at the same time, you risk the chance you will sign a new two year contract with ATT only to have the Verizon version come out a few months later and you'll be locked into your contract. Surely Apple wouldn't allow that to happen, would they? (I know ATT would love it).
