It says free wi-fi, though I'm assuming that GPRS is still hyper-expensive due to it being PAYG? Or have I missed something?

Unlimited browsing and wi-fi so all GPRS/Edge/3G browsing is included alongside Cloud and BT Openzone wifi access.

It is NOT a minimum top-up!

It says if you top up the minimum you get EXTRA texts/calls.

If you want to not top it up ever and just get incoming calls and free internet for 6 months you can.

Read it carefully!

what is the ****ing point of having a phone that you can't make calls on and if you aren't using it enough to put 10 quid a month on you shouldnt have a ****ing mobile phone kiddies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL come on guys wake up....

8GB iphone 3G = 299.99
minimum top up = 10.00 x 18 = 180.00
wireless net free for 6 months then 10.00 x 12 = 120.00

so on payg over 18 months the iphone will cost you 599.99 and you get rubbish tarriffs.

you don't have to top up every month.

Not everyone wants to commit to a contract or has a credit history that allows them to have a 18 month contract. This is a good deal for those people.

if you have a bad credit history perhaps you should be a bit more careful with your money than spending 300 quid on a phone!!!!!!!!

Well I think I'll be getting one of these to replace my iPod touch. I don't need a contract and the data prices on these are very reasonable for the mobile phone industry.

I agree with you but the point is if you just want to top it up once every now and then with £5 you can and you still get unlimited data for 6 months.

FREE unlimited data! Its a great deal and you get all the bonus incentives if you top up a minimum each month as well.

I believe the difference is that if you top up £10 at least each month you can choose from extra texts or calls and that is the difference between the "tariffs" - they are just letting you choose if you want extra calls or minutes!

So some quick calculations to roughly compare to PAYG costs for 18m to an 18m contract;

8GB Month top up 18month cost Data cost after 6m total cost
£299.99 £10.00 £180.00 £120.00 £609.99
£299.99 £15.00 £270.00 £120.00 £704.99
£299.99 £20.00 £360.00 £120.00 £799.99
£299.99 £25.00 £450.00 £120.00 £894.99

16GB Month top up 18month cost Data cost after 6m total cost
£359.99 £10.00 £180.00 £120.00 £669.99
£359.99 £15.00 £270.00 £120.00 £764.99
£359.99 £20.00 £360.00 £120.00 £859.99
£359.99 £25.00 £450.00 £120.00 £954.99

Hence if you planning on keeping it for 18m your defo better off to contract?

anything less than PAYG?

Just a thought but if you top up by £10 a month after the first 6 months then that will be used for the Data but will this also give you the free extras for topping up as if it does it sounds like quite a good deal as the other credit you have will still be carried over till it runs then you just top up by £20 every couple of months say to keep the calling credit up and the data charge.

Or am i just talking rubbish?

Thanks, bit miffed though, as I'm spending the next year in the US, if I were in the UK I'd buy one of these one release!

Why not buy one and unlock it, then use it while you're away and after you get back?

I would think that is correct.

that's how it works with my present (although now discontinued) o2 pay and go tariff, talk anytime: i top up by £10 which gives me 50 mins and then from that £10 credit pay for the web bolt-on which costs £7.50. so i spent £10 and get 50 mins, 200MB of internet, and still have £2.50 credit left.

are we getting a proper unlocked one in the UK? I assume Germany will be so I guess I can import if its got multi language on it?

Not having a contract as I dont pay for phone bill - just want a properly unlocked one that will let me set my own APNs etc .. prices anyone?

It won't be by any means 'unlocked'.

O2 for the first time, are offering the iPhone on Pay & Go, which basically means, instead of the contract stipulating when you pay the monthly fee, you can walk in and top-up money for the phone, paying for the phone in the process - monthly - and receiving call credit as well.

You'll still be on o2. You just won't be tied into a legally-binding contract.

If already knew how PAYG phones work, Feel free to slap me right now.

German iPhones will not be sold unlocked, AFAIK.

Thanks for clarifying that for me as if that is the case then it sounds a good deal for me as i'm a light user and would probably only need to top up the calling credit every couple of months as the extras would cover me for the first month easily as i text mainly.

So over 18 months it would cost me

£300 - phone
12*£10 = £120 - Data
£10 every 2 months = £90

Total = £510

Actually if you intend on keeping your 16GB until iphone 3.0 in 12months and need/do top up at least £20 pcm your better off on £45pcm contract for first 9months then drop to £30 and get all the free mins/texts (£734.99) and hope you can upgrade like the current iphone contracters can.

8GB / Month top up / 12month cost / Data cost after 6m / total cost
£299.99 £10.00 £120.00 £120.00 £549.99
£299.99 £15.00 £180.00 £120.00 £614.99
£299.99 £20.00 £240.00 £120.00 £679.99
£299.99 £25.00 £300.00 £120.00 £744.99

16GB / Month top up / 12month cost / Data cost after 6m / total cost
£359.99 £10.00 £120.00 £120.00 £609.99
£359.99 £15.00 £180.00 £120.00 £674.99
£359.99 £20.00 £240.00 £120.00 £739.99
£359.99 £25.00 £300.00 £120.00 £804.99

Decisions decisions... :D

Why would you think that the German one would be unlocked?

Vodafone Germany lost the lawsuit against T-Mobile Germany for the iphone injunction case in Germany. There is no law in Germany that requires unlocked phones in that country.

if it's good, why not?

Many people I know mainly text people rather than call them, these tariffs are good value for them. £10 a month will include 300 UK text messages and unlimited data. During the initial 6 months this will also provide an additional £10 of usable credit each month too. This has to be better value than a 18 month contract at £35 per month.
