Why would you think that the German one would be unlocked?

Vodafone Germany lost the lawsuit against T-Mobile Germany for the iphone injunction case in Germany. There is no law in Germany that requires unlocked phones in that country.

Didnt realise it failed. But Tmo were selling them unlocked.

I will be getting it just got to wait til i can find the initial £300 to buy it. I wonder if i can use my student discount in a apple shop on it.:D

Oh yeah, you get 10% discount if you put your student card on! I'm doing that!!

I'd rather buy it on contract. I don't understand why so many people are against contracts.
I don't have a problem with contracts per se. My total yearly spend on mobile calls is less than £100. If there were £5 a month contracts, then maybe I'd consider getting one.

if your an existing o2 customer, not eligible for upgrade, can you buy a Pay and Go and put your existing sim card into the phone? or is it locked to that one Pay and Go sim card??

As somebody who agreed to an 18 month contract on November 9 when I bought my iPhone, can I "upgrade" to a pay as you go and get out of my current 18 month deal and avoid getting sucked into another one?

I doubt it very much

Number?

You can port your mob number from another network if go on PAYG.

To keep your existing number, just contact your current network provider for a PAC code. Then let us know your PAC code when you purchase your iPhone in-store, or contact us online when you have received your iPhone 3G. Your existing number will be transferred within two working days of us receiving the PAC code. We'll give you a temporary number whilst you wait for your number to transfer so you can continue to use your iPhone 3G.

You won't be able to "upgrade" to PAYG from a iPhone contract.

And even if you were able to unlock the new iPhone I don't know if O2 would know you were using a 2G contact SIM in a 3G version - I don't know if they differentiate between EDGE and 3G data access in any way. But you wouldn't want a nasty surprise for using your unlimited data on 3G without an official 3G contact.

Having said that I am sure that the devteam will come up with an unlock for the new phone eventually so you could unlock it and use any SIM you liked.

Bolt ons

So can I use the O2 Home 100 bolt on; 100 anyone, anytime minutes each month from home to UK fixed lines and all UK network mobiles for £9.99 per month, top up 1p and get the 300 text anytime, plus the unlimited data after the free 6months?

I don't know how they'd do it, but I believe that they are under obligation to do so under UK law.

Virgin unlocked my PAYG phone in exchange for buying a £30 top up.

O2 is under no obligation to do anything. There isn't any UK laws on providing unlocking codes.

10 quid a month for unlimited data doesn't sound too bad a deal, especially as 02 are allowing tethering, that's cheaper than most of the 'Mobile Broadband' dongles out there.
