But while it may be working with an AT&T iPhone SIM... it doesn't mean that AT&T isn't going to smack you on the hand for doing it. People who cherish their unlimited iPhone data plan should consider this before messing around...

I agree, at&t always does it. If they somehow detect it, they will do something. Maybe it can be a excuse for them to remove your unlimited data.

does verizon use sims? i dont think

VZW does have a removable sim came with the iPad.

An AT&T model will NOT work on Verizon's LTE network. Any Verizon 4G LTE device will use a SIM card, because LTE is an evolution of the GSM standard.

Verizon LTE iPads have the HSPA bands that AT&T uses, so you can use AT&T's faster 3G if Verizon LTE is not availalble.

So can we assume that the reverse will be true as well: ATT iPad3 will work on Verizon LTE with Verizon sim card?

Same innards for both models I think.

I don't think so. First, you mentioned LTE and this discussion is about 3G (maybe HSPA+/4G). Neither iPad can work on the other's LTE network, unless someone wants to confirm that claim. Both use a different part of the band for LTE, yet both have some 3G sameness.

But, the Verizon model has CDMA/EV-DO or something which the AT&T model does not. I would guess that if you put a Verizon sim in the AT&T model, it will be looking for the CDMA/EV-DO capability. This is why the Verizon model is potentially amphibious and the AT&T model is not.

But this is my guess.

Not to get off topic, but I couldn't help notice that your display looks perfect! Correct vibrant colors, and no yellow tint. I remain hopeful that mine will look the same. Enjoy!

Thankfully I got the 64 Verizon model. Much better choice.

Not when it's time to resale :)

Just to confirm:

I have an ATT iPhone 4s. I have an ATT iPad coming today... can I take my ATT sim card out and put it in my iPad to get free data (or at least use the $30/ month data plan I have)?

Is there anything I would have to worry about in doing this? I'm guessing I'll want to watch my data usage. What about phone calls, what happens if someone were to call me or text me? I'm guessing iMessage would go through (or do those only work on wifi?)

I am sorry but what is the advantage of doing this? i dont see any

I don't have to cancel my unlimited data plan from my original iPad. When I don't have 4G Verizon coverage in an area that has good AT&T coverage, then I can switch to AT&T's 3G sim to get faster speed than CDMA.

Every iPad released to date has been SIM unlocked. I expected this one to be no different.

I am not sure if that is true because I have the first iPad on 5.0.1 and when I insert a Tmo sim it does not recognize it.

Different question...

If you buy a virgin "iPad" AT&T sim card and put it in Verizon iPad, will it let you sign up for AT&T data plan right from the device as if it was AT&T device????

Thanks!

Sorry if this has been asked, but I have the ATT iPhone 4 with unlimited data...so can I remove the sim and place it into my new Verizon iPad and use the unlimited
data? If so, are there any steps I need to do once I insert the sim to make it work?

Thanks so much!! :)

congrats OP your vid made it to the news section of macrumors. I hope you registered with google for advertising. You might get some hits out of this.

yes

For the light users no, for the moderate users yes, for the heavy users no. Verizon has better pricing at 20 bucks for 1gb vs 14.99 for 250mb.

yes, 250MB will basically get one nowhere. I could eat that up with about 30 minutes of web browsing and be done!

You almost certainly CAN do this. However, you will likely get text message and/or email from AT&T saying something along the lines, "congratulations on an iPad. Please sign up for an iPad plan."

Some report that after an amount of time they will move you to a tethering plan that isn't unlimited or something.

AT&T really closely watches what device their SIMS are used in these days.

AT&T APN carrier settings needed.

How do I setup the ipad on AT&T what is the AT&T APN carrier settings?

Now that we know the AT&T 3G/4G HSPA+ chip will work in the Verizon model, I have a couple of noob questions:

1) I'm picking up my Verizon iPad today and was hoping that the AT&T chip would work (great to hear!). I know the AT&T chip is not LTE, but I like having the fallback to the faster AT&T HSPA+ network vs Verizon CMDA. I assume that I can go to an AT&T store and request a spare AT&T 3G/4G HSPA+ sim chip for the iPad, correct? Do they usually charge for one or is it one of those "depends on the customer service rep you get" type of things?

2) I have the sim chip that came in my AT&T Ipad 2, but was planning on selling it with the iPad 2 when I put it up for sale. But, until I get over to the AT&T store (based on answer to question #1 above), is that the same chip as the one that supports HSPA+ and I can use it in the meantime, or is that chip strictly 3G, and the HSPA+ chip is newer one?

3) Just curious. I know that the new AT&T and Verizon iPads were said to be specifically locked down to their respective 4G LTE networks, but has actually anyone tried putting in a Verizon LTE Sim (maybe from their phone) into a AT&T LTE iPad just to see for sure that it doesn't work?

That absolutely will NOT work. The AT&T 4G iPad only has radios for the AT&T LTE network. The AT&T 4G iPad also does not have radios for CDMA.

The reason you can put an AT&T SIM in a Verizon 4G iPad and have it work is because the Verizon 4G iPad also has radios that are compatible with AT&T's GSM (HSPA) network. Those radios are there to make the Verizon 4G iPad compatible with GSM networks outside the United States. The side benefit is that it is also compatible with AT&T's GSM network.

I am REALLY glad I chose the Verizon 4G iPad instead of the AT&T model!

See the second post in this thread.

1) as far as I'm aware this isn't possible since each sim card is unique and contains your account data

2) a sim card is a sim card, what data speeds you can expect are controlled by the wireless radio in the device you insert it into

3) unless your time isn't very valuable to you, don't bother. At&T and Verizon use different frequencies for their LTE networks
