I just took my ATT sim out of my ipad 1 (unlimited data). I did APN change on new ipad (VZW) and put in the ATT sim. I'm getting Could not activate cellular data network You are not subscribed to a cellular data service. When I hit view account in cellular network settings, it says this device is not supported.

All I did is put the sim in from iPad 1 and it worked in a few mins.

exactly the same thing here!

AT&T would block me? I don't have unlimited so they shouldn't see it as a threat...

you'll get a notice suggesting you aren't aware that you need to purchase a seperate data plan for the iPad. eventually they'll cut you off.

it is a 'threat' to them as they are losing out on you purchasing a separate plan at a minimum of $15.

Has anyone yet tried a NEW UNREGISTERED AT&T IPAD SIM in the VZW model? Been looking but can't find anyone who has but there are so many threads to search through it's near impossible.

I did this. It doesn't work. The iPad can get an AT&T signal, but when you go to Cellular Data and tap View Account to purchase a data plan, you get an error that "The device type entered is not supported."

The AT&T store mistakenly gave me an orange and blue SIM card yesterday, which only showed No Service when installed in the iPad. The iPad sim cards are orange and green, so I had to go back to the store to get the right one.

Well if that is the case then you CANNOT use a new SIM in a Verizon iPad as everyone seems to think. You can possibly use an existing activated iPad 2 SIM but if you never had an ATT iPad (an already activated ATT iPad SIM) plan it won't work. Also if you don't keep the "working" activated iPad SIM active you can't REACTIVATE it because you can't access the account screen on the Verizon iPad for AT&T.

Can you activate/deactivate an iPad SIM online through AT&T or only on the iPad itself?

You can also use an iPhone SIM but you KNOW that eventually ATT will shut you down for doing that plus it's a real PITA to have to keep swapping them.

So it seems the Verizon version is locked down enough to prevent you for having both providers with the above exceptions.

You almost certainly CAN do this. However, you will likely get text message and/or email from AT&T saying something along the lines, "congratulations on an iPad. Please sign up for an iPad plan."

Some report that after an amount of time they will move you to a tethering plan that isn't unlimited or something.

AT&T really closely watches what device their SIMS are used in these days.

Thanks for the info! :)

Has anyone with a unlimited att iphone data plan tried inserting it in the new verizon ipad? Did att send out a notice?

I don't see why you can't walk into an AT&T store and ask to sign up for a data plan. You wouldn't need to sign a contract because you aren't buying any subsidized hardware. Just ask for a sim, then manage the plan online. The only caveat to that might be an activation fee, but I don't know if that would apply or not. I put my sim from my VZ Mifi in my VZ iPad and it works just fine. When I click the View Account button I get a message telling me I can't manage the account from the device, but the service works just fine, and I can still manage the plan online.

The bottom line is that somehow, Verizon and AT&T have managed to make their iPad versions mutually exclusive. You can go to Europe with a Verizon iPad and put a micro sim from any GSM carrier and get service. The only GSM carrier that you can't use is AT&T. It's effing bullshiit! Collusion!

Because you will need to give them the IMEI/ICCID which will be rejected just as it is when you try to do it online. It's the IMEI tied to a Verizon device that is the problem. Like trying to activate a Verizon phone on Sprint. Maybe when the iPad 3 eventually gets jailbroken someone will find a way to bypass the problem since they have access to the system.

I was considering exchanging my AT&T iPad until I read this. Not being able to easily activate an AT&T data plan on the Verizon device when it has an AT&T sim inserted is a no-go. Yes, I could insert an iPhone sim in it but that means I couldn't receive calls or texts while I'm doing that.

As another poster pointed out, its strange that you could use a foreign iPad sim in the iPad and be able to select one of their plans -- but not a AT&T sim. If that is true, gotta love U.S. carriers. They're so slimy.

Slimy but not surprising. The Verizon iPhone 4S can be SIM-unlocked for foreign carriers' SIMs but still won't work with AT&T.

Verizon's data plans are higher with less GB than att.

Depends. I an get 1GB for $20 vs. 250MB for $15. Plus I can mobile hotspot it. Better deal.

AT&T gets the edge with the $30 plan having 3GB vs Verizon's $30 plan only having 2GB.

The $50 plans are the same, but Verizon adds an $80 plan with 10GB.

Based on reading, it seems

1) Those that are using already activated iPhone SIMs or already activated iPad SIMS will likely either be stopped by AT&T remotely or have to maintain two iPads with two data plans (your new iPad with Verizon and an iPad 2/1 with AT&T). If you plan on switching between LTE and AT&T frequently, this is a pretty high cost (if AT&T allows it)

2) Those that want to activate new AT&T service somehow need to acquire a pin and get AT&T to activate iPad data in-store. Maybe some AT&T stores will do this, maybe some won't. You can't activate AT&T service from a Verizon iPad due to the software (or so it appears)

Bottom line, while it seems technically possible, when it comes to reality, it seems like it is going to be very hard to use a Verizon iPad on AT&T's HSPA network with any given reliability or consistency.

Close. It is VERY likely AT&T will put the kabosh on those using **PHONE** sims (because doing that, aside from the TOS issue) you are getting "free data" on another device which (yes, it is stupid) is not allowed (we agreed to the TOS).

I believe it is highly UNLIKELY ATT will have a problem with buying an iPad Data sim and using it in a VZW iPad.

The problem is, you can't activate a new ATT iPad SIM on the VZW device or online. (There is no PIN involved). Even if a store is willing to do it they still need to add the IMEI/ICCID of the VZW iPad to the provisioning process which their system will REJECT. That is the major issue.

If you have a working already active ATT iPad SIM (and account) you should have no problem using it and adding funds online. What you won't be able to do without calling AT&T is turn off the "auto renewal" feature of the prepaid SIM because that function can't be accessed through the iPad and I didn't see it on the website. On the website you can cancel the entire account but not cancel auto-renewal.

Can anyone give an idea of the kinds of speeds you get when using an AT&T SIM in a Verizon iPad? I know it won't do AT&T LTE, but do you get HSDPA+ ("4G" - the way they keep changing the definition of 4G makes it hard to ask this question) speeds? In a related question, if you were to take the Verizon and AT&T iPads overseas, should they be able to get the same kinds of data speeds on other GSM networks?

I guess what I'm really asking is, are the sub-LTE capabilities of the Verizon iPad the same as the AT&T iPad?

Yes, they both have the same 3G capabilities. The Verizon version drops support for AT&T's LTE bands, adds support for its own, as well as its CDMA 3G bands.

Well, there we have it. It really is an unlocked device.
Unfortunately that's not quite correct since you can't register a new clean ATT sim to the IMEI of the VZW device either online, on the device, or even in a store because AT&T's system rejects the unknown IMEI/ICCID.

I'll bet that once it is jailbroken someone will figure out a way around it but until then unless you already have an previously REGISTERED ATT sim it won't work. ATT's system seems to be blocking the VZW IMEI and or ICCID either intentionally or not.

Actually, it is correct. The device is unlocked. You can put an AT&T sim inside and it connects to AT&T. This is not a sim-locked device.

I understand AT&T makes it frustrating in general, but that is AT&T. When I travel in the US with my unlocked iPhone I have a pay as you go AT&T sim that I use. AT&T clearly tries to prevent people from using paygo on an iPhone so I have to change the apn to get data to work, but it absolutely does not mean the iPhone is unlocked. Heck, at times I even put that AT&T sim card into my iPad 2 and just entereed the proper APN for data use.

APN Setting

When I take my iphone 4S SIM card out of my Verizon iPad and put the Verizon sim card back in, do I have to go back to the website that ends in "nz" and run a program to have it revert back to the Verizon settings?

ok, so I think I might have figured it out…

All iPads are unlocked, BUT the two '4G' iPads have a different model number:

iPad3,2 - CDMA/GSM iPad (aka Verizon iPad)
iPad3,3 - GSM iPad (aka AT&T iPad in the US)

so… my guess is that since the verizon iPad (iPad3,2) is unlocked, it will accept accept any GSM sim card including the at&t, but it won't let you sign up for an at&t plan on the verizon iPad (iPad3,2) because at&t doesn't recognize (or actively blocks) the iPad3,2 model number.

This should explain why foreign iPads (iPad3,3) should work in the US with an at&t sim card since the rest of world will only be getting the iPad3,3 models.
Kind of makes you wonder if the verizon iPads (iPad3,2) will have any issues activating a local GSM sim in another country even thought it's unlocked…

fyi, the iPad3,1 is the iPad wifi only model.

I asked Verizon about using it today on Twitter and they said this:

"The Verizon iPad is unlocked so you can use it with international carriers & pay their rates. They are usually cheaper."
