Permit third party app stores
That's the same as letting ebayers set up shop in Walmart, but Walmart would get no compensation for providing that space and publicity and no say in how they run their businesses.

iOS would become just another watered down, unremarkable os trying to please everybody all of the time. It would literally be the end of the Apple brand as we know it.

This. This is precisely why my mom, grandma, brother and myself use iPhones. We trust the App Store. The fact that I am on this site means I am different than them, so I can move to Android if things get messed up. But some of my family and friends were on Android and got a lot of bad apps, then moved to iPhone JUST for the locked down experience.

That is essentially what an iPhone is for a lot of people. And there are some here that want to take that away.
This can't be stated enough. Apple provided technology to billions of people by turning computers into handheld appliances that do what you expect them to do.

New OS, new ecosystem developed and nurtured only by the developers and make their own rules in a cohesive fashion is the only solution. They all need to jump out of one of the ecosystems and prove the adversaries that the argument that the developers contribution far exceeds that of existence of ecosystem. No point fighting them in courts but now sympathies are pouring for the underdog but that is expected. They need to have a plan beyond this. Hope they have a plan.

Anyone who has spent time reading into these issues even on a surface level will understand that yes, what these companies are doing, Apple included, is getting a bit out of hand.

But I don’t expect anyone here to realize that. Because you people can’t do research of your own or even think critically for a second. Yes it’s Apple’s platform but it doesn’t mean what they’re doing is right.

You are all so quick to bash literally every other single tech company, but can’t criticize Apple on one thing. Apple is starting to repeat the same exact mistake Microsoft made in the 90s and I’m sure you’ll all gladly **** all over them because it’s Microsoft. But apple doing the same exact thing? Nah, ya’ll dig extra hard and do the craziest backflips to defend them.

It’s a company. You can enjoy and use their products and criticize things you have issues with at the same time.
You are not supposed to say this here I believe 😁

Wake up, look where these companies you are defending are producing their goods. They are doing absolutely nothing to strength the American economy, other than using their HQ location to advertise with „Designed in California“. Most of their money resides outside US, and they also don‘t have plans to transfer it to the US.

So much wrong in one sentence , almost all the R&D and operations of those companies is in the US.

"They are doing absolutely nothing to strength the American economy" - do you know how many ppl work in silicon valley for those companies , how much auxiliary business make due to that ? how much money those workers earn and pay back in taxes , how much business is being built around those companies operating from inside the US ? do you understand that almost all of the american public is invested in their IRA and investing portfolio with those companies , which means that when they do well , so does a large portion of the American public that can share that success with them?

China would gladly switch the low earning (for the employees) easily transferred factories with the R&D centers that the US have that cannot be moved at all.
You can see how companies are moving factories around , its not something that stays in one place , on the other hand silicon valley is just growing and growing , so yes those companies do a lot of good to the American economy and that you cannot see this is probably due to bias.

So now... you want to suddenly “Fix” every thing can’t say I’m opposed to it
Just I really hope it is done professionally and not like the Circus of a show they did in the Congress hearing...

It's more about companies that grown so big they prevent smaller companies from prospering. They just keep buying other companies. Small companies are the backbone of our industry and larger companies prevent them ever being really successful and be able to compete.
This feels why too much like “stick it to the man” and corporate resentment
Companies are not your friends, they are not your enemies as well, they do bad things, they should get punished, but saying they get to large is a bad saying,is success a bad thing,or is success to be limited because the government can’t do its job correctly?
That being said I believe that there must be way to support smaller businesses without killing large ones
And I would hope that if this would’ve been treated correctly that they would do that
But alas they didn’t even wanted to hear what Apple, Google, etc... have to say
Because they just want to do it perfunctorily...

That will essentially break the only advantage iOS has over Android. I love my Apple products. I have had all iPhones, Apple Watches, iMacs, Mac Pro, iPads, Apple TVs. But come on, the iPhones and flagship Android phones are just as good. Sometimes the scales dip in favor of Android. The only reason I went with iPhone is because its locked down to one store. That locked down ecosystem is why everyone I know chose iPhones. Especially lately, Apple has been doing nothing but playing catchup with Android features.

I really haven't been excited about the iPhone since the 6. Every year its all about camera this, pictures that. I just roll my eyes. I do have an iPhone X right now.
I buy Apple because I like the way they do software
The locked down nature is why I prefer iPhone and while I was scared of what a Mac locked down can be I am more and more fine with it thanks to these forums

Government intervention usually makes things worst.
Eh, sometimes yes, sometimes decidedly no. Government intervention to require companies to not pollute so much, to enforce minimum safety standards for food and other products, and such, are very good things. The “let the marketplace work it out” theme doesn’t always lead to the best outcome for society or humanity. As with many things, there are good sides and bad sides to government intervention.

Though I’m definitely not arguing in favor of more government intervention with Apple.

Big corps always get lazy or inefficient after a while. Small companies can always compete. If they don't want to sell out, they don't have to. Happens all the time, like with Uber and Tesla.

Problem is the big corps get preferential tax treatment and other things from the government that small ones can never get. Like US bailouts, Ireland tax havens, defense contracts, heavy-handed regulations that raise the bar of entry, the Obamacare tax on self-employed individuals, and US states just paying Apple or Amazon to set up there.

Small corps can't lobby. Any government action that interferes with the market is probably in favor of a big corp.

Small corporations can take their business offshore and avoid massive tax burdens. Any service business should consider just that. It only takes a bit of time and research. I wouldn’t be a US-based company if I could do it offshore and be an international business. It makes no sense to pay taxes that there are methods not to pay. What Congress needs to do is close tax loopholes for everyone. An alternative minimum of sorts for corporations. Then, tax 30% on worldwide profits. And only reduce those taxes when companies perform all their manufacturing in the USA.

Still can’t understand why they blocked xcloud other than trying to squeeze money out of Microsoft.

They didn't. They said that Microsoft had to be the copyright holder of all the titles. If Fortnite was published via xcloud, how would apple resolve the current in-app payment issue - delisting xcloud as a whole, and telling Microsoft to put processes in place or else be banned from the App Store?

Squeezing money would imply they were willing to cut Microsoft a special deal. I think Apple just considers fake third party app stores to cause too many security/reputation/usability issues, hence they have them banned in the app review guidelines.

The act they want to pass looks great. Move all Apple apps to a separate entity/company. Let them complete with others on the App store with same 30% cut. Let people decide.
Who is to say this company can’t be bought or persuaded?
Who is to say that company can survive financially as a stand alone?
How exactly does creating more bureaucracy going to help developers and or consumers?????????

I think it is fair that if some developers decide they don't want to follow Apple's rules, they shouldn't write apps using Apple's platforms, which Apple spends significant resources to ensure they work the way they do. However, developers will need the freedom to install what they want, perhaps custom operating systems, like how Boot Camp works on Macs.

Just for discussion's sake, let's say Apple opens up their hardware and allow developers to install whatever OS they want to skirt all the rules that Apple imposes on their OS and App Stores. An outside developer writes a custom OS that doesn't care to throttle hardware to manage operating temperatures. Who is responsible when an Apple hardware running this OS overheats, and burns a hole on the desk or an unsuspecting user's body? Should AppleCare cover the hardware repair costs?

Government intervention usually makes things worst.

Usually, maybe. However do you really think without the FTC (or Monopolies Commision here in the UK for example) keeping these companies in check things would ultimately turn out well for the consumer? The likes of Apple/Amazon/Facebook could literally stamp out all the competition. Capitalism is good, but I can assure you left unchecked and to run without restrictions, it would not end well for the likes of me and you.

This is grandstanding pure and simple. These politicians know that if they screw with FAANG the economy goes belly up and the stock market crashes big time.
Haha. That’s what they want you to think. If they shut them all down we’d probably be better off. Who is really more dangerous a crony technocrat or career politician? Both vampire species are driven by greed and lust for power.

News just in, Publicly traded company tries to retain market share and earn a profit.
Haha. FAANG is basically deep state and it’s time to castrate these mad cows! Wake up sheeples!! I know it’s shocking so keep your bed rails up so you don’t pitch on the floor.

Can you explain how Apple is a monopoly?

I’m not seeing it. If I want a cellular device (not a necessity), I can choose from many different brands and 2 OSs. If I do go with iOS, I don’t have to use Apple services. And I know many that don’t, even though Apple’s are sometimes seamless and easier to use.

Am I missing something? Maybe I’m not a power user so I’m not getting it.
There is also more smaller OS’s and phones
For people that claim they want to support developers and help smaller businesses why are you not buying a liberem phone? Where were you when Windows mobile tried and tried and tried
