I'm hoping the 'places' option in photos shows where the photos are taken without having to sync with iphoto, at least just the photos taken with the phone

Pretty sure the photos synced from iPhoto/Aperture are much higher resolution.

It had to optimise all the ones I'd previously been syncing and the zoom level seems WAY higher.

I'd say twice as good as before.

Can anyone confirm this?

It's *much* needed.

Does it still have the horrible dithering?

They tweaked the colour, gloss, and little details, that make the icons look clearer. Look at the speech bubble in Messages, the gears in Settings, the clouds in Mail, the TV in YouTube, etc. They even tweaked the pin and its shadow in Maps and the ring in the centre of the Clock app!
iPhone OS 4 adds ICC colour profile support, which is probably the reason why the colours look different in the screenshots. This combined with minor clean up of the icons (making things smoother and add some shadows), the wallpaper, the new dock and the brand new calculator icon makes it look very different, more refreshing.

I've noticed some changes for Contacts.

1. When adding a new contact - Screen layout has changed
What do you mean by "has changed"? Could you show a screenshot with the new screen layout?

- You are now able to view contact groups within the phone app. Was previously only possible in Contacts
I have groups in both the contacts and phone app since I got the iPhone nearly 1.5 years ago. I'm syncing the iPhone with the address book in OS X and I can set which groups should be synced with the iPhone in iTunes. I don't know if this also applies to people using EAS (Exchange) but as far as I can tell it has been in iPhone OS for quite some time (i.o.w. it's not an iPhone OS 4 feature).

Shows this...

It's kinda what it does on 3.1.3 by default if I remember correctly. The alternative will be to open it within certain apps.
Yup, but it should now be available to all apps with the extra option of opening it in a certain app.

With the new folders you can get up to 2160 apps on your iPhone which makes me wonder how many apps actually fit inside a folder. If it's something like 20 than it would make folders very very useful to me.
I'm also curious as to how invitations in the calendar works when you're not using some sort of Exchange account. Anybody?

I'll admit I did not read every post in the thread, but any chance you can flag emails yet?

On the iPad photos only show up in Places if they are synced with a computer. I'm on Windows and it still works so you don't have to use iPhoto.

Here you go - When adding/editing contacts :)

Hmm, I have about 30 games so using a single folder for games is not an option, too bad :(

That's very different indeed! I quite like that actually, it's a bit less of a hassle to enter someone's name and company.

I have folders for categories of games.

Like arcarde, music (tap tap, rock band), sports, etc...

Works pretty well.

You can definitely send calendar invites. I've never tried to from my phone, so I don't know if it is actually new for 4.0 (Invitees under the event edit page). No sign of being able to accept invites like in iCal/most calendar programs.

I tried the phone number search first thing. It's something I really wanted but sadly doesn't seem to be there :(

How can you send calendar invites?

Getting ready for that higher resolution iPhone perhaps:D

Thats my thought too, but I was wondering, what would be the advantage of a higher resolution? I mean on a computer, higher resolution = smaller icons = more space to do stuff on the screen, but on a limited sized screen like the iPhone, the icons need to remain the same, because everything is finger sized (Not just the OS, but the apps as well), so would the advantages of a higher resolution be limited to Pictures, Videos, and things like Safari being clearer while zoomed out? Or is there some other killer reason to have a higher resolution that I am missing? (I plan to buy the 4th Gen iPhone regardless of what specs it has, I am just wondering the feasibility of the higher res).

Yeah, I've been playing around with game folders as well, I have them separated in "Multiplayer", "Trivia", "Top Games", "Casual", and then just a general "Games". I put the top games one on the home screen (It has my favorite 12 in it) then the rest on the 2nd screen.

My favorite use of folders so far though is my Music & TV folder, which is in my dock, I put the iPod, Pandora, Last FM, Shazam, iTunes and Slingbox apps in there, the convenience of that, makes upgrading to the buggy beta worth it alone.

Higher resolution means smaller pixel size, which means a sharper picture. The iPhone screen actually isn't all that great once you see a more modern screen. On the Droid, for example, you can see much more of a web page at once and the small text is still readable because it is so sharp.
