Sorry I dont mean to be sarcastic but what's the use for character count in SMS messages?

Because not everybody has unlimited text messaging and with the character count you can see how much you have wrote so you don't go over the sending limit.

Can somebody a screenshot of in App SMS - why has this awesome feature been overlooked?

Thanks,

Shawn

As this API was only added yesterday there are no apps in the app store that use it. So no-one (apart from a developer who's chosen to implement this in their own app in under 24 hours) can possibly screen shot it.

Can any of you developers see if there's any trace of these functions:

- Persistent calendar reminders (keep sounding alarm at intervals until I clear it)
- Snooze calendar reminders

I too am looking to see if Apple added these features! I really would like the ability to snooze a reminder from the lock screen!

Some kind of accelerated scrolling in Safari at least. If you scroll a long page it'll speed up the longer you scroll. It's not as annoying or weird as I would have thought.

That has been present since 3.1.1 or 3.1.2, im not sure which, but it was definitely there. and its present in all apps. ;)

Can we see a screenshot of what happens when you hit 60 or 61 characters? Can somebody also post a screenshot of in App SMS

Thanks

I have a few requests for the registered devs around here...
can you please post screenshots of the "Top hit in Search", "Digital Zoom" & "Search in SMS/MMS"...
I also want to ask if we can edit existing playlists, or is it just new ones?
and what does "nested playlists" & "Persistent Wi-Fi" mean? [i saw those on the keynote slide where all the features were laid out]
Thanks a lot!

[EDIT]
and what do they mean by "iPod Out"? and one more thing, what exactly do they mean by "birthday calendar", because I have a 1st gen iphone running on 3.1.3 and every time i add a contact with his/her birthday, next time I sync with itunes, the Birthday shows up in both iCal's (mac & iphone)...

Ugh. How is that going to help people who don't know what the limit is for? They're likely going to assume that they CAN'T send that message and try to edit it down!

It shouldn't say 183/160

It should change to:
1) 160/160
2) 23/160

Then it's clear that you CAN send that extra text...it's just gonna count as 2 messages.

That's an API that has to be specifically implemented by an App developer. I think it's implemented in photos, but I can't remember how it used to act. In 4.0 it pops up a "New/Blank SMS"-style page where you can add contacts to the message, rather than doing the same thing by closing photos and opening Messages(which is what I think it used to do). The page also currently has a bug where the keyboard won't go down. Basically nothing visually exciting, but it does keep you from having to close an app you're trying to send content form, as the in-app email thing does now. It's not answering texts in-app, which might be what you're picturing.

Sorry, I thought this may have been implemented in 4.0 as standard, I didn't realise that the App would need to be modified.

Is the character count always there or just when you hit 61? I would like to see the character count and send button switched.

It's not going to ever get implemented in most apps: it's not intended for a quick way to send a general SMS without quitting the app. It's like in-app email composition: to be used only if it is going to send data directly from the app and be useful.

Do you all think Ipod Out could be an fm transmitter, which would be awsome. I keep wanting to buy on for the car but they always look ugly.

It's actually there as soon as there are three rows of text. If you hit return twice (with no other text) the count appears above send.

Yup..

I don't see why you would want to switch the placement of the send key and character count...

the character count is used if you're gonna send a 160cha. message to a dumb phone :p not if you're gonna send "sup". i'm pretty sure anyone can count to 3.

app suppression

I would like the ability to suppress apps. I don't really use stocks and some of the other apps. Native apps that I don't use should be given the option of hiding them from the screen.

MMS does not limit character count at 160.

My current plan gives me 100 SMS or MMS messages (both count as 1) so it's great for typing out longer texts.

nested playlist ... birthday calendar

Nested Playlists = If you have Playlists in Folders in iTunes then this structure now syncs: you see the folder name with a >. Touching it moves into the folder and you can see the playlists

Birthday Calendar = Pretty much what it says: there is a calendar called "Birthdays" that contains the birthdays of your contacts.

Oh. Then why is Apple putting a character counter in there now? It doesn't mean anything? What am I supposed to do with that information?

SMS (normal texting) does limit you to 160. MMS (multimedia stuff, usually pictures) does not. If you've ever received a message from someone that was split across two separate texts, it's because it was over 160. If you don't have unlimited texting, you got billed for both of them.

Great!! I love that! :D

but if I already have that on my 1st Gen iPhone [1.3.1] when I click on "show birthdays calendar" in iCal, and sync the iPhone I get them there... am I missing something?
