SMS (normal texting) does limit you to 160. MMS (multimedia stuff, usually pictures) does not. If you've ever received a message from someone that was split across two separate texts, it's because it was over 160. If you don't have unlimited texting, you got billed for both of them.

So if I have this right... If I send 180 characters I get charged for 2 messages. But if I sent 180 characters plus a photo, I get charged for 1 message?

Sorry...you'll be getting a lot of photos of my keyboard every time I send you a long text!

When sending a photo as email

THANK GOD.

Whenever I'd want to get a photo from an iPhone user I'd always have to explain the copy-paste method insted of the 'send-to-e-mail' method just to get the full size photo. They NEVER knew what I was talking about.

Now I'll be able to say "just send me the full size version, thanks."

The way I've always understood it was that 161 characters = 2 messages. 160 = 1 message.

You people have to realize that the United States isn't the only country in the world. There are other carriers that have these limits, hence the option.

I'm gonna say that what you said makes no sense. Sending a picture would take away from your MMS bucket (if you have limited picture messages).

If you have unlimited, then who cares... but I have the option enabled because I know some people with dumb phones. If my text is over 160 characters, I'll shorten it so they don't receive 2 texts. The iPhone and BlackBerry are smart to merge the two texts, so if I'm sending the message to a BB/iPhone user, I don't care if it's 1000 characters long.

Then what did JPark means by saying SMS has a text character limit and MMS does not?

I'm still not sure what that means. It sounds like if I include a photo (MMS) I won't have a limit but if I don't include a photo (SMS) I'll have the limit.

apparently, that's the hardest thing to uderstand... same thing happens when you try to tell them that FM Radio is still an important feature because Pandora doesn't work outside of the USA...

SMS, as part of the GSM specification is limited to 160 characters per message. It cannot send pictures, sounds or anything apart from text. MMS is more like an email in structure so is not bound by these limits.

Now I'm REALLY confused. Some of you are telling me it's part of the GSM specs, but others (like you) are saying it's actually based on what country you're in.

Yes, it IS hard to understand when you hear different things from different people!
It's 160 although some providers lower it by software just to make more money. If I'm not mistaken, carriers which have a deal with Apple the limit is the maximum (160).

Lebanon? That's in Ohio, right? :D

lol all i'm saying is that the character count thing may vary on each carrier. some carriers may see a 161 character message as 1, or as 2. i'm not saying this is the case, i'm only speculating.

I just did a test where I sent a 204 character text from my iPhone. By logging into my AT&T account online both before and after, it shows that as having used 1 text message.

So I've got my answer: Don't try to understand text messaging!

I'll give up now.

Another thing I noticed in 4.0 is that when using the camera, the shutter is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster. You can shoot picture after picture after picture.

some nice features listed here! list some more! cant believe theres a 3 page convo about something as trivial as the sms character counter lol.

is it a joke, or are you really asking this?
because no, Lebanon, that's in the Middle East. ;)

PS. there are exactly 19 Cities called Lebanon in 19 different States! :D ohio being one of them.

That's pretty funny. I was just joking and threw Ohio out there on a whim! EDIT: Sorry to hijack the thread and turn it into a "Places with a city called Lebanon" thread.
