d) I'm vouching that this C2D can last for long long time since it's 64-bit. Better be prepared than getting the CD MB just to hit a 32-bit dead end (soon). And once again, I need it.

64-bit is the next big thing, but they won't be dropping 32-bit for quite awhile (those of us with our Core Duo machines might object :p ). This is my opinion, but I'm guessing that by the time 64-bit becomes standard/necessary across the board for consumer users, you'll be looking to upgrade again. But hey, if you need it, better off buying the refreshed machine in 1-2 weeks than the one you could have bought 6 months ago. :)

It's the way Apple's going to update the machines. And anyway, they would like to keep the portable lines as separate as possible spec-wise in order to denote consumer machines form professional machines.

I don't think so. It's more important for them to compete with other PC makers than to differentiate their own lines. People thought like you before the current MB came out, and were predicting mac mini-esque specs. Instead they went with 1.83/2.0 core duos.

The MBP is distinguished by its screen size, casing, dedicated graphics, large HD options, FW 800, and express card slot. It would be the height of silliness for apple to hamstring the macbook for months just so the MBP can have one more distinguishing factor (processor).

Is that tomorrow as in Wednesday, or Thursday? Im guessing Wednesday (today) and the UK store is still up, so I highy doubt its not happening today.

It's today (Wednesday in the UK) and doesn't the store usually go down around 1-2pm GMT?

Yeah the other updates that I know of all happened by this time (or at least the store was in 'post-it' mode) so I guess this rumour was not true. Too bad.

But I wouldn't consider the MB with that glossy screen anyway, I'm holding out for the C2D Mini. I'm kind of hoping that it will be updated alongside the MB. I know, probably not, but one can always hope :)

Who cares if they are updating them today, I've got a new macbook pro coming anyways

I say the macbooks will be upgraded 10/14/06..

Most all of the on-line stores still have CD macbooks to sell...

Hasn't that date already passed?

As much as people say that Apple needs to compete with other PC makers, they really don't. Apple will survive even if they don't compete because they have all of us fanboys. They can keep the MacBook on a slower processor for as long as they want because the machine that they really want to sell, the MacBook Pro, is the up-to-date machine.

Those features aren't enough to differentiate the line. The MacBook is way too close to the features of the MacBook Pro that it would begin to steal some of the sales, whereas if they keep the processor behind like they are, both computers will sell and not be going for the same buck. The iBook for years was years behind the Powerbook, but it was only recently that the iBook and the Powerbook were similar, but that was because the G4 couldn't be upgraded much more, yet people think that was the way it always was.

just ignore those posts Dane0

Yeah, I probably should  It's just excruciating to wait for this computer to come out so I can finally get away from this terrible Windows XP system. I just spent 2 hours trying to get Mozilla Firefox 2 to work and that didn't exactly make my longing for an OS that actually WORKS less imminent. We might still get lucky today though, it's not even 6 am. in Cupertino yet.

*Looks to sky and prays to god.

*Realises that I don't believe in god, looks west instead and prays to Steve Jobs

My question is then: if you're so desperate to get away from Windows, why don't you just buy a different Mac? If it's a matter of processor, it won't make a difference. If it's a matter of portability, I can understand wanting to go for the cheaper portable (I did). But if you're wanting a new computer that doesn't run Windows, why not get another Mac?

Exactly...I can't compare how much I enjoy using my iMac G5 2.0 ALS at home, in relation to the HP I must face at work (even though it's a new one with almost no crashes)...

The fluid OS X experience, the clear design of the iMac, the lack of real security issues and the wonderful integration among the apps and the UI are simply an "order of magnitude" ahead of any PC out there, either under XP or Vista. You can't really compare.

If I am happy with an "old" iMac G5, you will be drooling when using a spanking new iMac Core 2 Duo 24"...I am almost buying one myself, without even needing it.

Well, currently I'm sitting with a "portable" solution, ie. an Acer notebook, but it just doesn't cut it anymore. I need something that doesn't run Windows badly, but I also need the new computer to fulfill the requirements I have for it, ie. being able to use it at University etc.
So yeah, if it was just about not running windows you're right, but I do need it to be a portable solution. For me the Macbook Pro isn't really a realistic choice, both because of the money and the larger size.

When exactly is Leopard planned to be released? I intend to buy a Macbook myself, but am thinking now it's November, whether it'll be usefull to wait until Leopard is our rather than buying one after the Core 2 Duo upgrade..

I'd like to see the new Intel GMA3000 or x3000 card in the new MacBooks... if they ever come out.

Maybe someone has already mentioned this after your post, but I swear I've seen mobo's with x3000's on them already. The drivers, though, are still under development and it's running in a software mode that makes it act like a GMA900. It's likely that Apple and Intel are working on OS X drivers for the x3000 and could be ready before the "general" Windows drivers.

I think Apple should at least lower the price now on this half year old configuration.

It is a shame that you can get a maxed out Macbook Pro cheaper than a Macbook.
