When I built a brand new Core 2 for Windows, it ended up performing slower than my old P3 that died from old age. explorer.exe hangs now constantly and it takes minutes sometimes for me to browse files. This started happening right after I had installed Windows and Office 2K3. Using the latest drivers, the best components, blah blah blah.

This is kind of trolling that polarizes people into camps. I just built a Core 2 windows machine, its snappy as hell and survived all the stress tests I could throw at it. Windows for all its many many faults runs quite nicely on many core 2 machines, you probably didn't do something right.

Do I still like macs better, yup. Am I going to be buying the new rev. of the MBP, probably.

Ok, I'm surprised if they do then can't be much cost difference between Duo and C2D processors!

Just wonder if they will elevate spec on Black MB to make it more Pro?

Interesting pricing...

It is interesting that Intel didn't drop the prices on the Core Duo processors ... they are priced the same as on the July price list and at the same price point as the Core 2 Duos that replace them.

New information

Just to help clear the air -

I phoned the UK Apple Store today and whilst he didn't know, the representative did think it would be january that an updated MacBook would be released. He said "as that's when Apple tend to release all their new stuff". Also he confirmed that they had a large number of MacBooks in stock; ie, they ain't going nowhere.

I'm tired of waiting, don't care enough, need it for Uni...I'm buying it on Friday

Seeing the word 'tend' seems to make the info irrevelant to me but yea, I'm getting a MacBook myself this Saturday.

I find it hard to believe an Apple employee would EVER admit that "over the phone", and if that guy did would have zero job tomorrow if that was true. They scan these forums like a fine tooth comb for stuff like that.

More importantly, those London people know a heck of a lot less, and more importantly, he was in RETAIL, not 1 Infinite Loop, so his opinion is thppppphhh....

I am going to wait it out, although I do have a MacPro, and a 15" PowerBook, so my anxiety is not very high.

What is the difference?

THis is probably the wrong thread to ask this, but what is the actual difference between a cd and a c2d? Other than being rated a little faster, is there any other difference? architecture that will make a difference in future apple products/software?

To me it's just the current need of a notebook for school and the early preparation of 64-bit applications coming soon (for the next 3-4 years). The evidence of increased performance is out of the picture since the statistics came out. If it wasn't school related, I would wait for MWSF '07 or longer for the best energy-efficient computer.

i think apple will update the macbook in the next couple weeks
weather it has C2D or not, i don't know..but we will be seeing updates soon.

In addition to incremental speed increases the C2D has a 4Mb L2 cache as opposed to a 2Mb cache in the CD. Also the C2D is a true 64 bit processor whereas the CD is only a 32 bit processor. The larger cache is likely to be more important in increasing the overall throughput (speed) than the incremental clock rate increase. Probably the more significant difference is in the 64 bit capability in terms of looking forward to future OS and applications.

Mind you, they're very fond of saying that it's shipping now only when it's a minor update like the MacBook Pros got. When it's all new, they like to make people wait.

If you are looking for more of an update to the MacBook than that which the MBP got, then I suspect you will be waiting until after the first of the year at the earliest.

It's not only the change in processor, but also other updates.

The Core 2 Duo has a 4 MB cache, EM64T for 64-bit computing, 4 integer execution units (vs 3 in Core 1), true 128-bit vector unit, macro-op fusion, and perhaps some other tidbits. Click here for more.

However, it's more useful to look at the changes Apple made to the C2D MacBook Pro. Most were expecting just a processor upgrade, but Apple also gave them:

1. 2 GB memory standard
2. Bigger hard drive standard
3. Firewire 800 port
4. Draft 802.11n wireless card
5. Probably improved specs on the LCD screen
6. Better ventilation for a cooler-running system
7. Memory upgradeable to 3GB vs only 2GB
8. Cosmetic improvement on the 15-inch model that does away with a hole for the iSight LED
9. Dual-layer 6x DVD burner (previous model was single-layer)
10. Probably some other tweaks...

Also, moving to C2D would probably bring about a few little changes here and there. The MBP C2D has a new camera-light indicator, and different vents, and runs cooler. Something like that would, of course, be welcome for Macbooks.

There's also a possibility something like the default hard drive would get upgraded, more RAM, and a new wireless network adapter (802.11n capable).

EDIT: crap, ksz beat me to it =P

yah, not so much

I didn't think the Macbooks would be updated today. Aren't these things updated on Tuesdays, anyway?

Next tuesday? Maybe. I dunno if there any real reason (other than too much supply of the current crop) why Apple would wait until next year. Those suckers sold like hotcakes as they were 1) small and 2) fast and 3) relatively cheap.

MacBook Tuesday?

They admitted to having it in stock?! I'm sure you asked if it were the macbook and not the macbook pro, but I need to ask anyway to be certain. I was going to buy one 2 weeks ago, but have been waiting and friends have been telling me there should be an upgrade soon. It's been a very frustrating wait. Will they or won't they?! UGH!

I hate those long wait times

I don't know about you guys but I hate when Apple announces products and we have to wait a long time to receive them because they are back ordered. I wonder if they will be able to massively ship the comping iPhone....
