Don't panic! Use good common sense like washing your hands and washing them some more. Remember 'regular flu' killed more than 6,000 people last year in the USA alone! The 'new flu' is not even close world-wide.
Not panicking is key. It achieves nothing.

Honestly, limit your consumption of media sources. Ultimately, you probably won't get it and if you do you'll probably survive it.

The idea is to have,
  1. Exchanges on the biological issues
  2. Exchanges on the response on a personal scale (how to protect your family and yourself etc)
  3. Exchanges on available information.
  4. Again, This is not to discuss “my government should’ve done this or that” or “he should’ve said this or that” or “it’s his or her fault”. I beg you, the idea is to provide information that can even save some lives.

I am opening this thread with the idea to have an informational exchange on Covid-19 (Coronavirus) that DOES NOT involve politics (go to PRSI for that).

For those that can and want to read the PRSI Covid-19 related threads, the threads are here, here, here, and here.

My opinion only but I can't see most discussions of Covid-19 staying out of the realm of the PRSI forum.

While discussing the virus with friends, it dawned on us, that cities and populations which rely heavily on public transportation, could be at a disadvantage in trying to contain the spread. Strange and unexpected side effect to having a good public transportation system.

Statistics would suggest there are far more people who have it than the 102 confirmed in the USA so far.

Actual deaths should be around the 1% mark in any area where the health system hasn't collapsed (ie, anywhere outside of Hubei province in China). That 6x as many people have died in America could be an anomaly given the smallish sample size of 100, but also suggests there could be a large number of people walking around with coronavirus that haven't been found and will be spreading it wider.

Most of the deaths were elderly people at a nursing home so determine the number of cases by death rate might be skewed.

I’m going to chalk most of the posts in this thread up to tensions running high when discussing a new and frightening virus.

On a more positive note, I’ve been misting myself with dilute vegetable oil I had left over from making fried okra, and my self-diagnosed cancer is in remission, my childhood pets have reanimated, and I smell ****ing amazing!

theater about a month ago, it was odd to listen to the audience; a select few were absolutely coughing their lungs out. They should stay home. It cant be enjoyable for them or anyone else. It should only take a couple of weeks to pull out of most lung infections.

Funny thing is I suffer from seasonal allergies, tree pollen in particular though dust and acariens also affect me to a lesser extent. One symptom is seasonal asthma and coughing - even more than sneezing. Although antihistamines help, they are not 100% and I am sure I may worry people near me.

Took a quick look at the PRSI pages you linked, yeah... I am not going back in there for a while.

Has anyone else seen the start of "panic buying" in their area? I went to Safeway today to do my usual weekly Saturday shopping, and I was surprised to see every checkout aisle open, massive lines, and tons of empty shelves, especially in dry goods. It's begun...
Yes, it's happening here in Seattle too. It's really sad.. people would benefit greatly from studying medicine in their spare time.

I bought 13 barrels of organic sourdough pretzels a while back. Just under 50 lb. Not a panic buy. I just love these pretzels and know they'll stop carrying them any day knowing big box stores like I do.

They're not very hard either, like a certain company's is whose latter half refers to the capital of Lower Saxony. Not crumbly. Crisp and crunchy, with a delightful flavor that pairs well with an IPA, sour or a darker beer.

Me too regarding the vacation. Planned departure date 1April To Paris. Of interest we bought travel insurance that covers sickness, and I imagine it would cover cancelled flights, but I have no idea if it covers travel during a world wide outbreak/pandemic of a dangerous illness. A phone call is warranted.

For myself, waiting for the first reported Houston, Texas infection and then I might be wearing a mask in public. As far as things you touch, you could bring some antiseptic wipes and be using them on your hands and things you touch, although primary transmission appears to be airborne, like flu.

I'm just really surprised to see the world's reaction to this. Yes, it's a contagious virus, it's pretty deadly (but far less deadly than something like Ebola), and it mostly affects elderly people. But it's definitely not a pandemic.

Yet for some reason, air traffic with China gets aborted, sports events and festivals get canceled, international travel has dropped a lot, the world economy slows down due to difficulties of getting supplies from China (of course Apple has suffered as well). I would say this is the worse I've seen not form the virus itself, but from the reaction to it, that is possibly causing more harm. Why is it so blown out of proportions? We've had virus outbreaks before, and nothing like what we see today has ever happened.

Well, as with many illnesses of this type, my impression is that the people who are primarily dieing are elderly, and/or sickly to start with before contracting this virus.

Interesting article: https://heavy.com/news/2020/02/coronavirus-death-rate-vs-flu/
This is for China. Check the 4th column.

Added a statistical table to post 1 of China infections showing death rate based on age. Of interest no cases for children 9 years old and less.

@yaxomoxay: A disclaimer about the chart, in the source link, the chart is labeled CDC China. I don’t know if this is accepted as accurate by the US based CDC, and is considered reputable. If there is any serious doubt about the accuracy of this data, I have no issue if it should be removed.

"Every cloud has a silver lining", or so the old folks used to say. With luck this should thin the ranks of old politicians in all parties.

Just in time for the 2020s. What could be better ? :p

I'm just really surprised

Why are you surprised? 100,000 plus people infected in weeks or couple of months, 3000 + plus dead, its spreading very fast all around the world, its very contagious and not much is known about it.
[automerge]1583335459[/automerge]
Its probably the "black death" of our time.

Only time will tell if the "blown out of proportion" reaction was warranted or not. Personally, I'd rather be on the safe side.

Coronavirus is been around for a while
read this on-line so dont shoot the messenger
first cases of it can date back to 2013?

say someone sneezes onto the ATM. There is a half life, for a better word, where the virus remains alive. I Do not know what it is for clovid19 but it is a well understood known number.

Alcohol based Antiseptic wipes are not effective on viral contamination.

Face Mask
They say a face mask is NOT ineffective but why are hospital staff wear the things? If you choose to wear them, change them out frequent. Saw locally some binge buying on these so may be too late to get them inexpensive. Buy them online.

France - Paris
you might look into how your existing health policy will cover you. Would you be covered under the national French plan and if not cost to buy a temporary policy.

on the travel experience; make a decision and a plan. after that dont think about it.
