I don’t even know what ‘Lollapalooza’ is. Sounds like some type of hippy fest that I would want no part in.

I mean, it just seems like everything is déjà vu, it was about this time last year leading into September, where things went horribly wrong for the majority of the country with schools, Labor Day was a major disruption for case uprising, ect.

Most importantly to me, if people stay educated and contribute to your community by taking the right measures. As the previous CDC Director said recently, ‘you can’t escape the Delta variant, it’s just a matter of time before it finds the unvaccinated’.
Giant music fest in Chicago. The count I saw was something like 400,000+ people attended. Go ahead and search for pictures of the 2021 crowd. It’s an eye-opener…

Lollapalooza in Chicago going on now is a COVID disaster waiting to happen. People packed like sardines, few masks, iffy vaccine checking.

Yep, exactly!

And the “fun” part…I work at one of the largest hospitals in the suburbs. So when the **** hits the fan, we’re going to be hit hard. Again. 🤦‍♂️ A lot of us don’t have it in us anymore. We’re so far beyond tired now it’s like we’re there but not there.

This actually made headline news in Detroit, that when the Milwaukee Bucks won the championship weeks back, there was 65,000+ people outside the stadium watching the game, and now there is linked close to a ~1000 cases just from that gathering.

This is photo is just pure lunacy.

Lollapalooza was an alternative rock festival, founded by Perry Farrell, who is the lead singer of alt-rock band Jane's Addiction. It's branched out to other music genres, especially due to the onset of alt rock and grunge in the early 1990s. Think of it as an annual alternative rock Woodstock.

But as you can tell, with COVID flying around it isn't a good idea to be doing this.

This makes me wonder what's going to happen in MSP with the parade for Sunisa Lee.

Yeah, I forgot about that. [She was great in the Olympics by the way, I really enjoyed her performances and she has a bright future, considering she’s only 18.]

I think the next 30 days will be really interesting to see how things transpire, there is Sturgis that’s happening right now with nearly 1,000,000 people attending, then Suni’s parade gathering, and other festivals happening.

Crap.. forgot about Sturgis, especially since last year resulted in rough 250,000 cases.

So 2 parades, a party, 2 festivals, and Garth Brooks still going ahead with his stadium tour, and most of this before school starts.. I don't blame the medics for being pissed. This is some serious dumbarse thinking on people's ends.

Stupid has an address in every state, every community. No locale has a corner on the stupid quotient.

Eienstein said that there are two things that are infinite, the universe and the capacity for human stupidity, but that he wasn't sure about the former.

I believe this year with Sturgis, that they are implementing temperature checks in various locations and handing out free masks. But that’s not going to help the situation, when you have nearly 1 million people congregating, and I doubt the majority will wear a mask. Even if a temperature check was successful where someone was above normal range, do they think bikers are actually going to just walk away and leave? They’ll probably just get lost in that massive crowd go somewhere else at the rally. Nothing positive is going to come out of Sturgis, with the exception of rising cases.

I hate to be pessimistic but I’m surprised that people care so little as to not be planning for rising rates. Or unaware of the numbers and what exponential growth looks like. Despite already seeing it a few times.

I don’t think you’re pessimistic, I think you’re looking at it from a realistic sense. I don’t see any problem in traveling, I just wouldn’t want to be part of any large crowds in close quarters. That’s my issue, because it’s also safe to assume that there will be a significant amount of unvaccinated people likely at that Sturgis rally.

Kristi Noem not only personally wanted Sturgis to happen last year, but thinks that the entire virus is a hoax and refused to support anything with masks, and still does to a degree. I wouldn’t expect anything better this year, especially if contact tracing was nearly impossible from her muck-up from last year.

UK study on COVID in children out.

Median illness at 6 days (shorter for younger children, longer for older).

Lots of other stats. Looks like COVID isn't anywhere near as bad for children as compared to adults.

And then on the other side of that, there's a 9 year old fighting for her life from COVID, and another that had to be life flown a good 150-200 miles to the closest available hospital bed in Texas. I don't know which way to take this one..

Who is going to suffer more from long COVID - a 65 year old or a 6½ year old?

Contact tracing seems to have lost its place in the realm of being pertinent. One of the reasons our community doesn’t use contact tracing anymore, is we didn’t have enough resources when the peak was it’s highest, plus it was where it was overwhelming to the point people weren’t being honest and truthful of their whereabouts/exposure, and it leads to ‘dead ends’.

I can only imagine how Sturgis would pose such a level of difficulty that probably require a massive amount of resources, how do you possibly follow up with the potential of 3000 cases or more, and that requires full cooperation from all parties.

The US has had 4.2 million cases in children which is a huge sample size compared to the UK study. It stands to reason that the US would have a number of more extreme cases. The US healthcare system has a lot of problems compared to the UK health system as well.

The data, just among children, indicate that the older suffers more.

Let's put it in these terms:

Who is going to suffer greatest across their lifespan from effects including poor recall/memory: a 65 year old who has retired from the workforce or a 6½ year old about to go through education and based on current life expectancies, around 75 years from death?

Below the worst impact - death - the potential damage caused by COVID is an order of magnitude greater for kids...

Oh, agreed. Our system here is absolutely screwed compared to NHS.

However, it does make me wonder, all variants aside, as to why the pharmas that be didn't think of having trials of the vaccine across all age groups in parallel. I mean, it's pretty well known that all SARS-type viruses are prone to mutations, so in coming at this in a single pronged approach puts us behind the curve as far as vaccinations go.. Yes, we knew that there wasn't much chance of infections in children, but not knowing if they could be transmitters of the virus could have lended credence to working on a potential vaccine for them in parallel to the adults..

.. because right now it's gut wrenching to kids - pre-teens to toddlers - fighting for hospital beds from this..

Not really relevant. I was just pointing out that long COVID affects children a lot less than adults.

What kind of person volunteers for a clinical trial? If the vast majority of the population thinks that COVID is harmless for kids, who is going to offer up their kids to test out a new vaccine?

Have you ever been on a clinical trial? The thought process on whether or not to go on one is different for the various reasons you would volunteer?

Try to get a job as a programmer in America, the land of opportunity. Sure, they are hiring. At their subsidiaries in China, India, Korea, etc. My sister worked for a major financial company, and they decided to 'farm out' all of their programming. They actually asked their programming staff if they wanted to go 'all expenses paid' to India to help train their replacements. (Oh, if they took the offer, they didn't get much for benefits after they were fired) They were shocked that no one took them up on it)

They tried to send their programming QC department to India, and when no one took up their offer, they started forcing people to rotate for a month at a time in India to do the QC work there rather than here. It was 'quicker'. She went for a month, and came back, gave her notice, and was gone. It's so cheap to get India programmers to do their work, they would throw away employees that had worked for them for decades. Greed...

You find me a job that can;t be done in China! Aside from McDonald's, Walmart greeter/stocker/manager. ALL of the *good* jobs are either paying crap, or you will end up training your replacement in (fill in the blank)...

EDIT: On Innovation. Research is expensive. Research that leads no where is even more expensive. Some countries actually fund Basic Research for corporations. Their country says 'think different, try new things. We will help fund you'. America? Pfffft... Hell, more holiday time off is like asking for their first born. Better healthcare is too much. Yikes... I'm sure 'we' must keep innovating, but having other countries manufacture those great ideas, and innovations is giving the farm away to milk the cows.

But this thread is veering off course. Bye bye...
I think being a doctor, dentist, nurse, college professor, electrical engineer, aerospace engineer, defence industry technician, actor, lawyer, attorney, judge, politician, police officer, construction worker, pilot, flight attendant, are all pretty safe jobs that will be around.

20% masked at the grocery store this morning.

I think that most people don't watch the numbers and they have gone up fast. The national media talks about it but the local media doesn't.

So our numbers will likely double in the next two weeks.
