Thank God. I hate gimmicks like 3D Touch. Literally useless. Things we manipulate with touch don’t need pressure sensitivity. And 3D Touch actions do not aid in productivity.

3D Touch is not intended to aid in productivity. It's intended to aid in convenience. That's the whole point behind 3D Touch, is the convenience of shortcutting applications, Using Peek and Pop with photo's, notifications and E-mails. It's a quicker process using 3D Touch. Just Because you see it as a gimmick, doesn't mean that it actually is.

Being the leader of a company requires far more than just charisma, and a knack of implementing good features. I’d say Tim is doing a great job by letting people like Craig, and many other team leaders within the company shine. Many of them are new to us after Steve Jobs Passed on.

The company is doing darn good, considering all of the negative press and gripes over (often trivial) issues.

in my honest opinion Tim Cook is a pure $$$$$- man where with Craig I see the last soul of what Apple used to be in the past

Craig should not be CEO, it would be a very large distraction from the excellent job he is doing now.

His title of SVP of software management is perfectly scoped to where he shines. Reorganizing things like Siri under him is fantastic, but he shouldn't be the one focused on optimizing global supply lines.

As a general observation, Apple missed an opportunity in iOS 11 to make 3D touch more pervasive, more useful, and more discoverable (e.g. visual or other indications when it is available, etc.)
Agreed -- I like 3D Touch, and use it, but the lack of indicators where it exacts (and what it will do) makes for poor UI.

How do you provide visual clues without really cluttering up the interface? I see it akin to right click in Windows. There’s no visual clue for that either but once you get accustomed to it it becomes second nature. Apple just needs to highlight 3D Touch more. And expand its use cases (like going deeper for various settings vs. bouncing you to the settings app). I get the concern about discoverability just not sure the best way to solve for it.

I think the plan was to slowly remove 3D Touch gestures and then 3D Touch all together if there wasn't much blowback. With this recent development, 3D Touch will be around a little while longer but it's obvious Apple's looking to remove it in the long term.
What are you basing this on? They just started to add 3D Touch to control center.

I miss that functionality. I am interested to know what technical constraint could be causing this issue.

I wonder if they did this as a test to see if people actually used it. Maybe only after they saw complaints they decided it's a worthy feature. The X changes this, so I think they probably wanted to get rid of it sooner than later to be consistent, but it seems like such a smalll thing, and why not have both options.

I wouldn’t say blaming a “technical constraint” is owning up to a mistake.
How do we know they intentionally removed it and are now bringing it back because of complaints. Did anyone at Apple ever say it wasn’t coming back?

I'm curious if anyone at Apple has been earmarked for CEO in case Tim steps down or dies unexpectedly. Phil possibly, but I think Craig might be a better fit.
Yes, Jeff Williams. He and Jony Ive are the only ones with c-level titles besides Tim and we know Jony has no interest in being CEO nor would be a good fit for it. If any of the current executives is going to be CEO after Tim it will be Jeff.

Why? Be specific, outlining his credentials and suitability.

He's doing a really good job as SVP Software. But that is far different than being a CEO of a company the size of Apple..

You're making too much sense to be on a forum with lots of armchair quarterbacks who've never run a large company before... :)

Honestly I think it is more akin to Apple’s Mac OS8 introduction of contextual menus to that OS, where it was so hidden that many didn’t know you could hit the Control key while clicking to show a contextual menu. It’s intended purpose was to reduce the amount of mouse movement users had to do, to reach commonly used menu items.

Discoverability was always a problem for Contextual menus on Apple OSs . Remained a big issue until they added their first mouse with native 2-button abilities.

What are you basing this on? They just started to add 3D Touch to control center.

It was in 10 also, You could adjust the intensity of the flashlight using 3D Touch in control center, in the past. There were a few other items that had added functionality with 3D Touch in that iOS version as well.

Think about how they removed the home screen from the app switcher

Think about how this affects the visual representation of entering app switcher with 3D Touch from the home screen.

Tricky?

I’m daddy Craig all to myself.

Want * :(
You can edit posts under the option of Tools, it brings up your post where you can go back and fix your typos.

I'm married, so you're welcome to Craig as far as I'm concerned even though I think he has nice hair, but I think he has a wife who might object. ;)

Some of us turn off WiFi completely so we do not get tracked unless we want to be.

I'm all aboard full Wireless disable - One button for Wifi (On/PartOff/FullOff) and same for bluetooth and RFID. All must be able to be disabled completely.

No offense meant but this doesn't make sense. You're still being tracking via the cell towers. Even if you turn off GPS and all the other stuff, they can still triangulate your position using the towers (it's how the first iPhone did it).

Best news all day, now if only my 7+ battery issues on iOS11 could have a fix...

My iphone 7+ battery has been terrible, and mail and calendar are eating through my data. Been this way since public beta 5 and they have not fixed. They email me every time and say thanks for the feed back this issue has been solved. but it still has not been solved.

Popular? Really? I never use it because I think it's too awkward.

To be fair, most consumers don’t use every single feature of a device they buy often, or, sometimes ever. It doesn’t mean others don’t want or, don’t use it themselves.

3D Touch is one of the items I miss when I am using my new (to me) Pixel..

I didn't even know it existed until people complained it was gone. I still have iOS 10 so I just tried it, and it's kind of hard to trigger, for me, anyway. I was always using the home button, and think I shall continue doing so.

I think I actually like how it will be implemented in IPhone X, but how much added difficulty does it cause everyone to have to develop a version of iOS to accommodate the only Apple device so far that will lack a home button? Did that somehow cause a conflict with this implementation, which is why they had to remove it temporarily?

How hard were you swiping when going back? Because it actually requires pressure exerted just on the edge. This would mean when you initiate a swipe you'd actually be pausing on the edge and applying pressure before continuing the swipe motion. A fluid swipe without pressure would solve this issue for you.

No, I do not pause, if you start with enough pressure from the edge of the screen (with no case on), it will activate.

I will try and explain. I am right handed, and mostly use my phone one-handed in my right hand (I tend to carry things in my left hand (like my daughter)). Now, the case I have on my phone has a small edge that sticks up to give the screen some protection from being laid flat (as I’m sure a bunch do now-a-days). Now using the phone right handed and one-handed, I can’t do the 3D Touch control for multitasking, but that’s fine.

When I move to left handed, I tend to (with the way I hold my phone) slide from the case onto the phone, which tends to skip the edge where the 3D Touch area would be. I also tend to use more pressure with my left hand just because it’s my non-dominant hand. If I try to use it, because the case is right on the edge, trying to get the shortcut to work seems to be flaky for me, I basically end up sliding past the activation point.

Now, when we remove my case, which happens from time to time to clean it and I don’t always get it back on right away, when I use my phone one-handed (and in my left hand), I’m activating the shortcut 9 times out of 10 just because of how I use the phone.

Basically, TL;DR: I can’t use it from my right hand and in my left hand I just use to much pressure and the case defects me from using it so when the case is off, I use it all the time without trying.

And with my thumb always being around the home button, I don’t see the need for the shortcut anyway. Wish I had the money for the X, as that makes way more sense to me than the other shortcut.

Wow, that ended up being longer than I expected… sorry about that. Hope that makes sense.

There is no indication at all that this is the case.
