Needs external HDMI input if that's the case. Really needs to act as a monitor.
yes this is the big issue for me not getting an iMac already. I could with a new monitor and could be tempted to get am iMac to go with my MacBook Pro & Desktop but without HDMI input it's useless as I don't have space for an iMac and a second monitor. It can't be that hard to do and the cost can't be much for a £1000+ product.

Don't kill me but...

Is there even a market for iMacs? 99.99% of people can get by and do their job 100% on Macbooks or MacMinis especially with the new M1s. People who need serious raw power can go for the PRO.

This leaves a very thin opening for the iMac. Prosumer?
I think the iMac is a good representation of the saying 'the whole is more than the sum of it's parts'. I think it's still hard to match the experience of using a 27 iMac (even today) for the price. Sure you can get an external screen for your macbook but it would cost you more money if you want to get a high quality screen and would not be as elegant. And the same is true if you get a mini and all the accessories. Not as nice, and at least as expensive.

Now imagine a high-end mini living inside a less insane version Pro Display XDR starting at $2K. I think that would be a pretty solid proposition for users that primarily work on desktop! It's definitely a smaller market than laptops, and I think that's why we've had to wait for so long, but it is still a good market to take and they have virtually no competition!

That’s the thing, the Mac mini only goes up to 16gb ram, for heavy video editing, after effects and 3d modelling you really need 32gb and beyond. As well as dedicated gpus, or something heavier than what’s in the mini at the moment.

There’s no way my work warrants a mac pro, so for the time being the 2019 MBP will suffice. Needless to say, this iMac should bridge the enormous gap between mini and pro.
Educate me. We live in the days of System on a chip, fast SSD drives, large super fast caches for processing (on the chip)

Is maxing out your Ram now just a throwback to a bygone era? Is it not now the equivalent of a go-faster stripe on a boy-racers car?

After the most recent "leaks" being so completely wrong, the words "credible leaker" are a complete turn-off for me. I'll believe it when I see it.

Enjoy the new iMac - unless I can sell it, I’ll be using the 2019 for years to come. Doubt Apple would make it worthwhile in a buy back.
Apple should allow Windows to be booted
Yes to lots of ports but no to USB-A ports. You don't need "dongles" for legacy USB. Just replace your current USB-A cables with new USB-C cables. They're backward compatible and you can replace your cables for pocket change at Monoprice. Get over USB-A. If manufacturers keep including it on new devices, lazy accessory makers will never feel compelled to update to the current standard.
you really don’t know what you are talking about. USB is used for more than just cables.

This news for sure got me excited. I keep using my trusted iMac 27" late 2012, and that model for certain shows its age. I have been on a fence to upgrade for few years and the 2020 model for sure got me very close to pull the trigger, but AS is just that much better. Even though i am not using my iMac for anything fancy but standard office productivity, web browsing, light home video editing, the most recent Intel version would be sufficient for many years, I am patiently waiting for the AS version as that is the future.

I just want them to bring back target display mode - I loved that on my old iMac, and used it long after its computer power had become too old for daily use to use it as an external display for my MacBook Pro. Used it that way until I moved to all 4K displays.

But I won't buy another iMac until they bring back target display mode - I don't want such a great display to be obsoleted by the computing power long before the display itself is obsolete.

(The old iMac is now the kitchen "recipe and random internet use" computer, ironically still with a Thunderbolt 2 cable plugged in to it so that family members who still have older Thunderbolt 2-equipped MacBook Air and Pro can use it as an external display in a pinch.)
Don’t worry, the display will develop image retention well before the computing power of the iMac becomes obsolete.

It's probably going to cost a lot more than we're used to, but I'm fine with that. You have a great display and performance, new iMacs can't come soon enough.

*continues throwing money at screen*

I might be going out on a limb here...but I suspect Apple knows their market extremely well, with many years of iMac sales under their belt.

There are a number of instances where you still need to max out ram. Professions like video editing, photo editing, developers, 3-D rendering, etc. can all require more than 16GB of RAM. On an M1 MBA with 16GB I can hit 100% usage and get low memory warnings in an IDE relatively easy. My iMac will require a minimum of 32, possibly 64.

Can you imagine how slim this thing could be ?

we're talking paper thin ... maybe they'll put all the guts in a tiny chin and have a basically 1mm thin screen ? ( OLED .. micro led ?? )

A 32" display would be the only thing that could make me leave my iMac Pro, which has served me very well since 2017 and shows no signs of aging out of my workflow.

This render looks totally swank. I love it! Give me the biggest retina screen possible with no fan and upgradable RAM and SSD and I'm sold!

When reading about the bezel-less iMacs I am always wondering how fingerprints on the display can be avoided when inserting something into the ports on the back, at least I am holding the iMac in these cases at the chin.
iGlove. $29.99

I have a feeling that the new 27-inch (which is going to be around 32-inches) will be labeled the new "Pro" due to its larger size and probably the ability to add extra upgrades inclusively to it. So the 24-inch will be "iMac" and 32-inch "iMac Pro"...

I wonder if Apple could find an elegant way to make the ports part of the stand? They’ve never been too bothered about the rear of the machine. The current model has a very clever angle on the hump whereby it looks about 5mm thin unless you are really close to the back. It’s an understated idea but it works really well.
