If your Macbook Pro explodes before you have the battery replaced, does Apple give you a replacement Macbook Pro 2015 or something else perhaps better?

Hopefully it won't get that far. I think its just the battery.. Its a battery recall program, not a macbook pro recall program

The last thing i'd wanna do is continue using a smoldering Macbook Pro

I just got mine back today from this recall. I don't know if it's a factor that I never stressed the battery (only about a single cycle per week), but I never had any issues with it.

My main concern was that they didn't "mess up" anything else with it since it's the best laptop I've ever had. Somebody in a related thread said his got back with case damage, one USB port non-functional, etc.

FWIW, I can confirm that mine definitely did not receive an entire top case with new keyboard, etc. It only got the battery replacement. It's interesting that some folks are getting all that new stuff. I wonder what causes some to receive all that and others like myself to just get the new battery?

Anyway, there is nothing amiss on it and everything is working fine (phew!). Also kind of nice to see that "Cycles: 0" in system info...hehe. The only thing left to worry about in my mind is how long before *this* new battery explodes and blows me up. If they didn't know before, could they not know again...? :/

It was most likely just a bad batch of batteries. If anything, the revised batteries will be some of the most reliable ones. It’s one thing to keep screwing up a keyboard design. Keyboards don’t cause fires or laptops to be banned from airplanes. The stakes are high here. These should be good batteries.

Mine was part of the recall. I dropped it in to my Apple store on Sunday afternoon and picked it up Tuesday after work after they said they replaced and tested the new battery - so a very quick turnaround. They told me that they had cleared the backlog of work to make room for this recall as they knew the recall was coming. They did tell me the top part would be replaced (but not the keys etc)- the invoice with Zero balance on it as it was paid for by Apple - shows the battery, labour and replaced "top part" at the cost of $667.00 Aussie Dollars (no charge to me of course) - they gave me a copy of the invoice with the work done on my MBP.

If your MacBook Pro explodes in front of you, like pictured above, then Apple should give you the top of the line 2019 machine with no questions asked whatsoever

But then you'd have to deal with the stupid touch bar and keyboard issues.

Wow, hope that user is alright.

Unfortunately, battery technology that we have today is what it is. It is a volatile mix of chemicals inside. Makes you think the next time you're sitting on a battery-powered car...

Apple has had bulging battery issues forever. They NEVER learn. They continue to focus on thinness rather than battery containment. I’ve had multiple powerbook/macbook/ibook/mbp with swelling batteries. And one iphone and a watch series 0 that was replaced due to bulging batteries.

At least when the batteries were removable you could get them replaced without the batteries destroying your mac. They would bulge and make the battery hard to remove or reseat.
My Dell laptop bent the chassis when it expanded. I believe it’s more of a lithium ion issue than an Apple issue.

My question is are all these battery issues we’re seeing as of lately due to manufacturers getting lazy with their manufacturing quality and succumbing to greed? or is it a growing pain where the industry is finding kinks in the technology and slowly but surely making the technology better? I hope that is the reason, but with how long batteries have been around, I’m kinda scratching my head when I see these kinds of things still occurring.

What’s happening is they are finding ways to chemically store more charge in a smaller volume which increases volatility. Simply put.

I am now on my 4th Apple lemon during my adult life. I have a laptop subject to this recall and was told "leave it for up to a week at your nearest Apple store or ship it to us and you should have it back in 2 weeks." I am an attorney, use the machine daily in my work, and don't have another machine. Does Apple have loaners? No. Do they plan to compensate me for shutting down my business for up to a week or two? No. Do they particularly care? in my opinion, no, as well. Fortunately I found a service provider (though not currently on Apple's approved list) who has ordered a replacement battery for me and will install it "while I wait" once it comes in. If there were a decent alternative to Apple, I'd run, not walk, towards it.

Something like a System76 laptop is an option if you really want out of the Mac world (and Windows is not an option). I can't personally vouch for how good the hardware is, but I've been fairly happy with their OS on an old i5-2500K PC. One thing really cool about their laptop hardware is almost all of it seems to be user replaceable.

My MBPro 2014's gets so hot that touching your finger above the keyboard near the edge that it can feel like fire. I added a fan widget to increase fan speed to keep it from burning up.
My screen wallpaper is an air conditioner and that seems to help too.

Many years ago Ford put a bunch of Firestone tires on their Explorers. Then the tires started to spontaneously burst and caused several crashes and some deaths. Firestone recalled the tires and people procrastinated and crashes still occurred.

On a hot summer trip from Iowa to Texas my right rear blew out but safely got to the side of the road. Needless to say I learned my lesson and replaced all four on that trip. Had the blowout been on one of the front tires, it could have been catastrophic.

Just honor the recall and get a safe battery.

Yet some apple fans talk crap about note 7 explosion.... what? It’s too quiet.
So a voluntary recall of a four year old laptop after a couple isolated incidents are reported = hundreds of Note 7s exploding, pressuring Samsung to stop production?
[doublepost=1562213049][/doublepost]
Only one MacBook exploded so far and Apple issued a recall beforehand. Several hundred Note 7s exploded before Samsung recalled them.
fixed that for you

TBH these should be banned from all airplanes ASAP. This is coming from a long time Mac user. No joking around with this stuff especially when it comes to flight!

I'm actually amazed this problem isn't more widespread in general. It's something of a miracle that lithium-polymer batteries don't have more issues like this. They're nasty. If ever that was a technology that could use a quantum leap, it's batteries.

i dont know about you but if my macbook pro blows up it will more than likely destroy my bed or couch. id end up suing apple. Asking for a macbook pro replacement at that point should be the last thing on your mind. Im sure apple would give you one plus more if they can not deal with another lawsuit....

This repair involves replacement of the entire bottom half of the MBP, meaning case with keyboard and trackpad. Apple does not recommend or support a battery-only replacement, so I'm not sure what your local service provider is doing but if they are replacing just the battery, it is not Apple-approved.

Reminds me of the Galaxy Note 7.
