It was most likely just a bad batch of batteries. If anything, the revised batteries will be some of the most reliable ones. It’s one thing to keep screwing up a keyboard design. Keyboards don’t cause fires or laptops to be banned from airplanes. The stakes are high here. These should be good batteries.

OK but in this instance the battery exploded during sleep mode/unplugged, that is how I've left my Macbooks for years when not in use, obviously the safest route is a full shutdown, any truth to the theory that shut downs wear out your computer faster than sleep mode? Or was that always a myth?

There have been battery recalls on other laptop vendors as well... Dell/Thinkpad being quite frequent on this.
Battery technology sadly isn't able to keep up with our demands.
Apple is being quite public on this, and that's a plus for them.

Batteries swelling dates back to at least my 2008 15” unibody MBP that had removable batteries.

I can’t remember if my MacBooks before that had the issue.

I think the first time I saw it in person was 2008 or 2009. Wasn't even catastrophic to the computers back when the batteries weren't built inside the case.

So a voluntary recall of a four year old laptop after a couple isolated incidents are reported = hundreds of Note 7s exploding, pressuring Samsung to stop production?
"hundreds of Note 7s exploding"? Really? There were a few incidents for sure but given that Samsung shipped 2.5M Note 7s the ratio of reports in both cases could be close. MacBooks do take their time to develop the problem though. But the outcome is still the same.

I am now on my 4th Apple lemon during my adult life. I have a laptop subject to this recall and was told "leave it for up to a week at your nearest Apple store or ship it to us and you should have it back in 2 weeks." I am an attorney, use the machine daily in my work, and don't have another machine. Does Apple have loaners? No. Do they plan to compensate me for shutting down my business for up to a week or two? No. Do they particularly care? in my opinion, no, as well. Fortunately I found a service provider (though not currently on Apple's approved list) who has ordered a replacement battery for me and will install it "while I wait" once it comes in. If there were a decent alternative to Apple, I'd run, not walk, towards it.

Remember if anything goes wrong in the future Apple won’t touch your machine because it was repaired by an unauthorised provider.

Mine qualified for the recall. The battery had also started bulging several months prior. It would rock a bit. It was also at the point where the lid was not closing entirely. I took it into an Apple Store on a Monday. It was sent to Texas and it was back via FedEx on Saturday. The lower inside with keyboard is new. The bottom where the slight bulge was isn't new, but the bulge is gone.

Do you offer the same alternative you are requesting to your customers when you're sick or in vacation? Also if you always need a machine available I guess you could have two machine to ensure a continuity of service.

I feel sorry for people who bought this in countries without Apple Store, how much will it cost to ship? Are you even allowed to ship explosive products?

i can only imagine what horrors you subject your system to on a daily basis. how you pack up and transport your macbook. what kind of crud you eat over the top of your keyboard. how long it’s been since it’s been opened or cleaned internally. how long it’s been keeping the same god awful image of your crap information over the years, never having a full restore done on the software.

the common denominator with the 4 systems you’ve put through hell is you, the owner. why should apple reward your bad habits with a loaner? go buy a second system and return it while they fix your other one. shouldn’t be hard for an attorney. they have the most lenient return policy in the tech industry. as is their turn around if you compare it with any other company it’s size, doing its own repairs, in-house.

people like you shouldn’t own, get a lease and trade up every year.

Hmm. I have a 13' inch 2015 MBP that is not covered by this and the battery is expanding. Says that I should service battery.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if it bursts into flames when no one is at home or everyone is sleeping. Will just my apartment burn down or the whole complex? Will anyone die?

You are being extraordinarily naïve if you really believe only 26 machines have been affected.
You are being extraordinarily naïve if you really believe that we can assess the situation based on imaginary numbers.

That would not be good in an airplane
In an airplane, at least you have fire extinguisher at your disposal in the cabin. Imagine leaving your laptop at home and when you get back from work you find your house burned to the ground. I procure to leave always laptops on glass surface when leaving home just in case this big battery is deffective.

I'm actually amazed this problem isn't more widespread in general. It's something of a miracle that lithium-polymer batteries don't have more issues like this. They're nasty. If ever that was a technology that could use a quantum leap, it's batteries.

Lithium-polymer and lithium-ion are not the same. Laptops do not need Lithium polymer. We’d have a lot more exploding Macs if we did. Lithium-ion are more stable but pump out less current, while Lithium-polymer pump out a ton of current but are much easier to destroy.

Wear out how? There’s no hard drive.

Mail in repair, for potentially exploding laptops.

That does not seem like a good idea.

Apple needs to institute a push notification system alerting customers of recalls. They already invade our desktops with constant reminders of new OS versions without any way of turning it off unless you want to also turn off other things. The least they could do is notify you of a safety recall on screen.

Are customers being mailed safety recall notices? Car owners are required to be notified by mail by law.
You need some more upvotes. Bravo. I'd find it much more useful than that blindingly annoying reminder about iOS12.x.x
Are you listening TIMMY!!!
All companies could, (and should), do this if they wanted to with any internet enabled device they sell.

Apple send you an empty box with all prepaid stickers. No cost for you.
