Seriously, stop the fanboism already, face this argument for what it is worth.

Ok, here goes. Dells are cheap, always have been. That's because they're the 800 lb. gorilla of the computer world and they don't mind selling at basically zero profit to get market share.

I use a dell core duo laptop at work. I hate it. I don't care how cheap they make it; I'd still buy a mac. Why? I'll explain.

1. Macs may be more expensive, but I can still afford one. I'm a student, but it's not like I can't afford the mac. Ultimately, the price difference doesn't mean much over the life of the computer. If that makes me rich and spoiled, then oh well.
2. The OS is more important than every hardware component combined, at least for me. I'd rather run OS X on 3 year old hardware than XP on modern hardware. The OS matters more to what I do every day than the latest graphics card or processor. Maybe that's not true for you, but it is for me.
3. You pay for design. It's accepted in architecture, cars, landscaping, furniture, and basically everything else. Why is it so hard for some people to accept it with regard to computers?

I'm just trying to shed some light to the APPLE FANBOYS out there that CHEAP dell prices DO exist....if you feel great spending DOUBLE or even TRIPLE the price of dell just for the OS that's fine. Just know that you're paying a huge premium just for the OS.

But why are you so obsessed with what we buy? Why do you care so much? I don't care about you, so please, do me a favor, and stop caring about me.

Lots of tension in this thread... over a dell... time to move on folks, it's nothing new.

I just spec-ed out a Dell 17" ugly giant mofo Inspiron E1705 laptop and a 17" MacBook pro to as close as specs as I could, including, among other things:

Glossy Display
Windows Professional / OS X
2GB 667mhz RAM
100gb 7200rpm hard drive
2.16ghz

The MacBook has the older Core Duo, and the Dell has the Core 2 Duo. I could not get those the same obviously. What did I find?

Surprise, the Dell is cheaper!

The Dell came out to slightly over $2700 (after online rebate) and the MacBook a touch over $3000. What do I get to compensate for the slower processor and extra $300?

Mac OS X
Over half an inch thinner.
Backlit keyboard.
Aluminum case.
Built in camera.
Almost 2.5 pounds lighter.
No Viruses
iLife '06
Way sexier.

Sorry you Dell fanboys, your Core Duo 2 that is 10% better in real world benchmarks is not worth my suffering with Windows and that big ugly Dell. I will gladly spend the extra $300 or so dollars and buy the MacBook Pro.

So, as usual, it comes down to a difference of needs and opinions. Maybe the Core Duo 2 is worth the huge, ugly, cheap looking case with tons of loud fans and stickers running Windows XP to you guys, but that does NOT MEAN IT IS EVERYBODYS BEST OPTION. I would buy that Dell and be totally 100% unsatisfied in every way. What you want and need in a computer does not apply to everybody else. We are not idiotic "fanboys" because we actually value thin computers with backlit keyboards. You're just plain ignorant for passing everyone off that doesn't agree with you as a crank bent on loving Apple and Steve Jobs.

So lay off the Fanboy crap.

dell computers are cheap cuz the parts they use are from various (usually chinese) vendors...they're pretty much the "whores" of the computer world..."they'll put anything inside them to earn a buck." :D :D
mind laying off the racism terms?

Also, are any of you Dell supporters looking at these machines? They really are FUGLY. Doesn't that mean anything. I think Macs just look sleek and sophisticated. Very well built machines.

yeah, well so's the cray x-mp. but you don't see people complaining about the cray x-mp's aesthetics. in fact, whenever people come over to my place, they don't even mention the unusually warm couch they're sitting on.

Your beating a dead horse, it's just over.

Why the hell do I have a Mac and why am I willing to spend so much money on it?

Because the other side got too annoying. It's the OS that kills me in the end.

If windows didn't have all these spyware problems, guess what?

I'd build my own damn editing machine from scratch and it would be a hell of a lot faster than this turtle of a G4 I have!

Because of the Mac's simplicity and lack of viruses, I own one, and probably will always own one until it picks up a virus, and don't forget Final Cut Studio either...

In my HUMBLE opinion, if I didn't edit videos or have nothing to do with media, I'd have a cheap dell machine right now and I wouldn't be talking to you guys, I'd probably be running a virus check.

I've experienced windows for nearly 4 years, so don't call me a fan boy. I know how Windows works, and I don't like it. That's it from me.

My BMW 328i cost over $4000 more than its next-most-expensive competition. When I trade it in on a BMW 335i Coupe later this year, the disparity will be even greater.

My Apple Cinema Displays cost quite a bit more than other brand monitors of the same size. I'm about to purchase another Apple Cinema Display, either two 23" or a 30".

My H&K USP and USP Compact are more expensive than pistols of the same class from Glock, Springfield, and Smith & Wesson. In the next couple of months, I'm going to pick up another H&K—a P2000, to be precise—which runs about $200 more than its main competitor, the Glock 26.

I find that the majority of Mac users are similar to myself in that we've discovered—sometimes the hard way—that there are advantages to not making decisions based on price. I don't want to sound like a snob, but if it's all about the bottom line, you shouldn't be using a Mac. If it was all about the bottom line for Apple (and lowering their margins to compete with Dell), then all the things that make the Mac great would disappear.

When getting an estimate for my clients, the majority of them don't care about cost—or at least it isn't a primary concern. They want what works. Peace of mind, and sometimes even aesthetic appeal, are things upon which you can't place a dollar value.

I don't care if Dell is cheaper than Apple. The price is commensurate with the experience.

Buy the Dell Book Pro or whatever and give a review after you open it. Then update the review after 6 months. It runs slower than when you first bought it. Feels like a 3 year old machine. Oh wait, reformating and reinstalling Windows fixes that. No thanks, I'll stay with my Mac.

IMO (and respectfully), this thread has 1% to do with Dell's pricing and 99% to do with Generik wanting a CD2 MacBook Pro so bad that the inexplicably long wait seems to almost literally be driving him bonkers.

I'm pretty sure that there's medication for this. There's no reason for a notebook computer to cause this much angst. Ever.

Disagree. I genuinely thing Generik will always be incredibly unsatisfied with Apple's offerings.

I lay the blame squarely on people who post garbage about Dells being cheap, not Dell itself.

I guess I've missed a lot of his other threads. I hadn't noticed him arguing a point as vehemently as this in a while.

And will still continue to buy them.

He is the lead "waiting on merom/santa rosa" cowboy on the forums....yet makes threads like these.... too bad lives arent as cheap as Dells, then maybe he would have one.

I just configured the low end Inspiron to the exact same spec (with the exception of VGA instead of MiniDVI and no bluetooth on the Dell) as the low end Macbook for $650 which is before the $350 "online orders rebate". The Macbook goes for $999 on Amazon.com. I like the Macbooks but recently purchased an iMac C2D because I really couldn't force myself to pay this big of a difference just for the OS and design. IMO, the Macbooks currently are in such a bad need for updates that it is rediculous. If the price difference were only $100-$200 for a simlarly specced PC then I would go for the Mac everytime but at >$200 for an old processor I would get the PC lappy. This being said, there are some PC manufacturers who are still more expensive than Apple ***cough*** Sony and Lenovo.

How is this not fanboism again?

"Boohoo, we figured that we can't win by real world metrics, so now we are using our own rules instead! Apple can't do this because of so-and-so reason (which strangely is declared by the fanboy, Apple never even used the same line of reasoning in any media release), there, Apple wins!"

I don't mind paying FOUR HUNDRED PERCENT more, how about I at least get a current processor please? Am I asking too much? Please tell me yes.

hey trollboy....if you want to buy the cheapest computer you can buy, then do it and get on with your life.....it's only a computer so stop obsessing about your vendetta, you'll be a happier person probably, well maybe.....ok, so you wont be LOL

I actually think the OP has a valid point...Dell is really insanely cheaper!

But after the student discount, it is roughly the same for me...plus dell don't do cash back in Japan.

If I live in America, I will definitely consider a Dell!

Dell? Who cares about Dell? Ugly, thick looking, cheap. I got a brand new PPC mini silent upgrade 1.5ghz bt/apx/superdrive for $399 this week and a new 12" PB for $899 less $125 on iPod rebate -- (i sold the iPod) a few weeks ago. Apple is the BEST deal quality for slightly more bucks than a Hell laptop. Since I'm staying out of the Intel issue for a few years, I could care even less about these Intel CPU comparisions.

Having spent an afternoon setting up a couple of Windows boxes (at least Dell gives you a number of options on configuration about installed software - you can just tell them to leave all the trials and ISP nonsense off), I have no desire to ever go back, simply because Windows actively works against you 95% of the time (whereas OS X only actively works against the user 45-50% of the time).

That said, all the spyware and virus stuff is overblown - if you've got a brain larger than a peanut, XP should be no more dangerous than OS X. Don't visit sketchy porn sites and use a webmail server (either proprietary or something like GMail) for any semi-public addresses to keep a line in the sand between you and the haXors.

For the "OMG WINDOZE" fearmongers here, you're missing out on one fine use for a cheap Dell portable: Linux.

I needed to quote this because no one else had done it yet. You are my heroine for the next fews hours. Until Generik posts another thread about why apple sucks and some one else has a witty comment.
