They need to include 3D Touch if they're going to release a new 4" phone. Why should we get an inferior phone just because we like a smaller size? Come'on Apple!
This. My wife hasn't upgraded yet because she likes the size of her current 5. Her battery is getting very wonky so I'm excited that this is coming out so we can upgrade her to this. But I really hope that they put 3D touch in there so it's on par with the current capabilities of the new phones or why are we even upgrading?! Supposedly 3D touch will become more integrated in the software over the next couple years so I think it should be in this phone. And lets be honest, the phone is thicker so adding the new screen tech isn't going to be a space issue.

The iPhone 5(s) is the sexiest looking smartphone to date in my opinion and I kinda hate the way my iPhone 6s looks by comparison. I would love an iPhone 7(s) which looks more like the iPhone 5(s).

Don't kid yourself, it will be paper thin because they want to save a few pennies per phone on shipping costs. I agree with you, though, Apple should bring back the antenna design like they had on the 4 & 5.

I really think it should have the design and majority of the internals of the 6s and then call it the iPhone 6s Mini. Call it a day. There shouldn't be a compromise on internals (beyond what is required due to size), design, or marketing.

In Sept release a iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, wait 6 months and in March release the iPhone 7 Mini. I'm absolutely fine with them staggering the release a bit to a) drive sales to higher end b) minimize the mid-year slump. What I'm not ok with is making the phone a second class citizen and creating confusion by building a device with a complicated name, derived from a phone released 3 years ago, with the design of a phone from 3 years ago.

If the tech and storage size are there then this will most likely be my next phone. Here's hoping...

You should check if her iPhone 5 is eligible for Apple's battery replacement programme. Mine was, so I got the battery replaced for free at the Apple store.

It has great battery life now (almost as good as my 6) and my girlfriend is very happy with it.

I think the "5se" will replace the 5s. Then when the 7 is released the 6 goes away to be replaced by the 6s in the lineup. Leaving us with: "5se" - 6s - 7 going into the holiday season. We'll see though.

There's no reason to drop the iPhone 6 when the 7 is released, in fact they lose an important marketing tool to attract budget Android customers who might want to switch to Apple, but haven't been able to get a larger phone cheaply enough. So for my money, the 6 drops to $449. I'm still on the fence about the 6 Plus, but it likewise can put more Android-sized phones into the hands of those who couldn't previously afford them.

To me, it makes more sense that Apple is building a 3-size family that will continue to be offered across 3-5 generations. Especially when one considers that Apple has been selling the 5c and 4s in India up until this month -- who knew a 5 year old iPhone could still be sold as new anywhere?

Apple should just build a three size family for the current generation/newest generation of phones going forward and just dump the rest of them for aftermarket sales between customers who like to sell on Craigslist or purchase their phone through Amazon. This should be their product lineup:

4" iPhone 7 - $599
5" iPhone 7 - $649
6" iPhone 7 - $699

Cut down the bezels, reducing the weight and size of the phone. Flush the camera again. Put a super AMOLED screen on it, and put the antenna in the frame of the phone instead of on the back. Perhaps then, Apple will once be respected by the people who actually pay attention to this stuff.

Did her battery go "wonky" after 9.2.1? Mine started draining incredibly fast after the update. Apple says it's technically in too good of shape to qualify for a replacement under warranty, but cannot explain the batty drain, other than to say 9.2.1 uncovered a previously undetected defect. I also lost the use of my Touch ID which they also cannot explain any other way.

As for 3D Touch, I don't see the immediate need for it. Let developers figure out how to make it indespinsable first, then incorporate it into every phone when the technology has shrunk enough not to compromise the design. This "5se" looks about the same thickness as the 5s. I wouldn't want it to be any thicker just to get something that isn't widely implemented, or even missed by me at the moment.

For precedent, they had an opportunity to update the 5S when they dropped it to the mid-tier with the 6 release, like the 5c did. But they did not, despite the importance of Pay. And then they kept it the same when they dropped it down again with the 6S intro. But now, as Pay is expanded widely enough, and showing up internationally, Apple doesn't want to keep selling a new phone without Pay -- anywhere, as evidenced by the fact they stopped selling the 4S and 5c in India just this month.

I'm not sold on 3D-Touch, but by the time I decide to upgrade again in a year or two, I'm sure There will be much more compelling reasons not to do without it. Apple's annual upgrade plan makes that much easier to do, as well.

If the design really ends up being similar to the 5s, it will mean Tim Cook has taken his already existing lack of innovation to an all-new low.
iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, Apple Watch, iCloud that finally works, Apple TV that finally works, iPad Air, 3D touch, iPad Pro, Pencil (yes, sorry but people LOVE it), Siri that finally works. CarPlay, OS X and iOS interrogations (hand off, messages, phones calls, etc.) etc.

He is no Steve Jobs but he is leading a company that is innovating just fine.

I'm not his cheerleader but why set yourself up like that?

I seriously hope they don't go with the 5SE name. That sounds borderline Samsung to me, why can't Apple simply refer to the iPhones by generation number or model year like their other products?
It should be:
iPhone Mini = 4"
iPhone = 4.7"
iPhone Pro 5.5"
or something along them lines

As for the number I really hoped they would drop the number with the 6 but they didn't, at what point does it start to sound silly having a number iPhone 10, iPhone 23, iPhone 69?

Perhaps then, Apple will once be respected by the people who actually pay attention to this stuff.

I know you guys don't like hearing it but here's a fact: these "people" that you speak of represent such a small percentage of Apple customers that it's really not enough for them to give two shites one way or the other. Most Apple customers (myself included) don't give a crap about bezels or slightly protruding cameras, or whether the screen is Super AMOLED or non-super AMOLED, or the fact that the 5SE, or whatever it's called, will be based on an older design. We just want a nicely-made product with a solid overall user experience. Apple delivers that every year, and if we all get what we want then it's a bonus.

Also I don't get the critiques over the 5SE. It seems powerful enough that 3D Touch is the only differentiation. And judging from the critiques about 3D Touch, doesn't seem like that would even be an issue for many of you.

There's no reason to drop the iPhone 6 when the 7 is released,

I'm just speculating. If the "5se" has an A9 SoC, we end up with:

"5se" - A9
6 - A8
6s - A9
7 - A10

So we get a bigger phone, the 6, with lesser internals than the "5se" which causes an issue price wise - historically Apple usually go up in price with screen size - MacBooks, iPads and Apple Watches and iPhones. That's why my guess going into the holiday season:

$450 - 5se
$550 - 6s
$650 - 7

On the other hand they want to make money, and if that means having 4 models then your way may be it. Hell, we still don't even know if this 4" iPhone is real yet.

It would be great if the iPhone 8 was released in 3 sizes with feature parity (where sensible).

Could be the last iPhone with a headphone jack. I still think it's gonna flop. Apple is always about the "new" not the past.

At least with the 5c they made an effort to make it look new. And frankly I knew plenty of ordinary customers who wanted to upgrade their 5 to a 5c just because it looked cool. They don't care about specs.

I have trouble believing it will have updated processor etc - that won't save much on price, not that Apple ever makes a cheap phone, but a 4" 6 design would have looked modern, felt slimmer in the hand and had a nice rounded screen, not 2012 retro. If they make it Black, not Space-ANYTHING, that would be an improvement, like the original 5.

The joke is, anyone who comes in for this will immediately be told their years of iPhone photos won't fit on the device and be upsold to something newer. Can you really make a whole line of phone just to get customers in the door so they can be upsold??

And how does any of these justify a media event
  • a 4 year old phone design
  • the iPad Air upgrade that should have happened last September, (der, still wondering why iPad sales are in the toilet?)
  • new watch bands, possibly new faces for a slow and clunky gen 1 watch
  • a faster MacBook

Maybe Schiller can grab all these and jump in a clear tank of water in his Speedos to prove they're water resistant. You got me 9to5/Patch, what the hell is going on here?

Exactly! While I personally wouldn't care (but would prefer another design), I can see many people holding off buying a 5-looking phone in 2016 just because it would look "old"... ESPECIALLY if this is gonna be the entry-level phone and targeted at people who can't or don't want to afford the more expensive iPhones. People are that simple.

Cut down the bezels, reducing the weight and size of the phone. Flush the camera again. Put a super AMOLED screen on it, and put the antenna in the frame of the phone instead of on the back. Perhaps then, Apple will once be respected by the people who actually pay attention to this stuff.

Well...Antenna-gate?...

What is this based off of? Do you have anything to back up your opinion?

To make it easier for you... and so you don't cherry pick the part of my response that suits your argument.. here's my original response IN FULL.

Got it? The first part is the list of innovations since SJ handed off control...

I thin they should release 2 4.. Inch iPhones .
1. iPhone 5se, with 1136x640 display, 2gb a8, nfc, same front en main camera as iPhone 6. At the same price level as the current 5s.
2. iPhone 6s mini, with slightly down clocked a9 2gb, same improved camera' s as the 6s, 3D Touch. And a 4 inch 1335x750 display, for the same price level as the regular iPhone 6.

Drop regular iPhone 6/6+.

So after sept/October (launch iPhone 7)line up will be:
2x 4 inch iPhones
2x 4.7 inch iPhones
2x 5.5 inch iPhones

In each cat. one high end , one cheaper option.

In 2 years release a iPhone 7s mini, drop the 5se, drop the 6s/6s+ line(keep the 6s mini) release iPhone 8/iPhone 8+, and you get the same kind of line up. Etc, etc.
