The iPad is a great product for what it is...a giant iPhone. If you actually want to be productive on a tablet without having to work around the limitations of the device, then get a Microsoft Surface.

If you actually want to be productive without worrying about limitations, get a laptop that doesn't suck instead of a Surface.

This is going to be a really lame upgrade.

  • Faster processor? Big deal, they do that every year anyway.
  • Super thin side bezels? Major downgrade. I guarantee you there will be issues with accidentally using the touch screen while holding.
  • Smaller form factor? Who cares, it's not smaller by enough to make it more portable, but it does mean that any previous iPad case won't fit.
  • Longer battery life? Who cares, nobody should be using their tablet all day anyway.

When are they going to add some real specs, like 41MP camera like Nokia has, or NFC like Samsung has, or multitasking, or 128 GB, or some function for the fingerprint sensor (which may not even be included) besides the super rare function of security from intruders?

So far there is literally zero reason for any logical person to be interested in this product. It's actually WORSE than the iPad 4. This is what happens when you trade a visionary like Steve Jobs for a beancounter like Tim Cook.

So you mean to tell me that you intend to carry around a giant iPad to take photos from? That you'll carry it everywhere you go for NFC (or is this merely so you can have the convenient option to use it at the two stores in your area that support it once in a blue moon). What type of multitasking would you prefer? How many you-tube videos would you prefer to be watching at once? Any of these things are great features, but none of them really fit the iPad. I think it's silly that people think that Apple is cheating you when they haven't merely glommed every random feature that exists or could exist in a product somewhere into their own products. If you prefer another companies product or approach to features, great; that doesn't mean Apple should necessarily follow. There are points when complaints are legit (see the long wait for the Mac Pro), but this is kinda over the top, no offense...

I tried the surface and hated it.

You "tried the surface" as in you are a loyal Apple fanboi that played with a Surface for a few minutes in Best Buy or the Microsoft store "and hated it"?? I own an iPad, and know many people that try to make the iPad do more than what it is designed to do. They have been forced to find ways to make the iPad work for them. But there are inherent limitations with a giant phone, namely lack of TRUE multitasking and possibly more important a file system. I know how difficult it is to switch to a new device, and even more difficult to switch to a new operating system and ecosystem...but I just wish that all you Apple fanboi's would stop trashing the competition with your Apple elitism. Once upon a time you had to figure out a way to make a giant iPhone do the things you wanted it to do...if you are happy doing those things just one at a time, that is your choice.

The best device to use as a "capture the moment" camera is the one you are holding in your hand at the moment.

Ok well I have my phone on charge, and I'm relaxing on the sofa in the evening with my iPad, or look at my cute son/daughter/cat dog. Let me capture this moment using the iPad I am holding now.

Dam no flash, hang on a minute for me to go get my iPhone it's on charge.

A flash in a basic fundamental part of ANY camera way way way back since almost cameras were invented and people realized you needed nice light for a good photo.

Int's not cramming every random thing in, a flash is a basic fundamental thing that goes along with a camera and CRIMINAL as it costs, what? a dollar or two, and this will be in 2014

I find this statement funny. Apple fanboi's always try to separate the tablet experience from the desktop (or laptop)...yet I consistently see, and work with numerous people who want the iPad to be so much more. They buy apps that provide filesystem-like functionality, they get a keyboard for an operating system that isn't fully designed to understand what each key is supposed to do...all to try and use the iPad LIKE a laptop. With Surface you at least get a REAL operating system, with a REAL filesystem, with a REAL ability to use accessories and peripherals. It really boils down to what you expect a device to do for you. In the world I work, I see people who wish the iPad could replace a laptop...but let's face it....IT CAN'T. That is why we are now fielding Microsoft Surface.

  • Why would you need a 41MP camera on an iPad
  • Why would you need NFC on an iPad
  • iOS 7's multitasking is perfectly fine
  • The iPad already comes in 128GB
  • The fingerprint sensor literally just came out a week ago, give it time
I prefer the iPad 5 over the 4 because:
  • It will decrease in all dimensions
  • It will weigh less
  • The FaceTime camera will be improved
  • The rear camera will be improved
  • It will have a faster CPU
  • It will have a faster GPU
  • It has stereo speakers
  • It has a rear mic
  • It will probably have that M7 chip
  • It may have more RAM
  • It may have TouchID
  • It may have 802.11ac
  • It looks better, in my opinion
  • Buying it would clearly aggravate you, which would make me joyful

I've never understood the whole "why you would u NEED this and that" argument, in such a dismissive manner for feature wish lists. These products aren't NEEDS...so suggesting cool features that beat the competition are VALID. Why would you "need" a 41MP camera? Nobody NEEDS a camera on a tablet to begin with. It would just be great to have it. Why would you NEED NFC, USB port, more storage, fingerprint sensor, etc., etc.,? Because it would make it better...but yes, technically, life will go on if these "needs" are not met.

Us "Apple Users" always have had a problem with "Apple Fanbois".. While I worry about specs, features, and performance, I think you will find what really matter to Apple Fanbois is how "elegant, magical, sexy, and delicious" a computing device is......... I also could care less about "Tim and Jony"....

There is quite a bit of difference between an "Apple User" and an "Apple Faboi"..... If I had a dime for every-time I way asked "Why are you here if you aren't going to pledge your every-dying love" to Steve", I'd be a wealthy man....

Looking at your view. Thank God it is not you making decisions for apple!!!

Well put, there definitely is a difference between an Apple User and a Fanboi...and I appreciate all comments that come from a rational, practical, standpoint. Sadly it is the Fanboi that overshadows the stereotype of Apple Users with their empty, blind, undying love for everything Apple. If an Apple product works for you, that's all that matters.

LOL are you seriously making those arguments?

No one knew about 64 bit processor if im not mistaking. They put out stuff that was obvious and kept all the really good hardware stuff secret.

----------

Ive never even used 256gb of space in any of my computers or anything close. Nor would I want to. Im not a horder. I get that the picures are retina but...i think 256gb is overkill for this time period.

I would kill for a 1Tb iPad :/ I travel a lot, and have a 64Gb unit now. I can only store a very small portion of my 1.2Tb music library, and very few movies or anything else, for that matter. More space is better.

touch id meh
new colors meh
I am more interested in processor updates and possible higher memory capacity SKUs.
We could really use a 192 or 256gb ipad at my work. we already max out the 128.

SIGN. ME. UP.

Hopefully it ships before the end of the Year. I recently dumped my full sized iPad for a Mini, I can never imagine going back to the full sized, i just want a Retina Screen on it.

A TB of SSD? Good Luck with your 1200.00 iPad.

Can you even fathom the cost of a 256GB iPad? Why not a microSDXC card slot? Unlimited storage instead of overpriced fixed storage.

You mean +$1200 for the 1TB upgrade!

I'll consider upgrading my iPad 2 when the new iPad has multi-user support. I see TouchID working brilliantly for that. Until then, I can't believe how great and future-proof the iPad 2 was!

Is it? Oh good. Cos I have one. But like you, won't be upgrading for same reason. But I am keen to know why it's future proof :)

I really wish people would start to educate themselves just a a little bit more in the photography field. Whoever is responsible for one of the bigest misconception of the century, aka 'High Megapixel = Better pic quality" deserves to be hanged!

Actually never mind people, it is absolutely mind boggling when even companies like Nokia don't realise that!!!

I am sure Nokia realize and know it quite well... They just capitalize and make money on peoples ignorance...

honestly, if this thing is for realz, I think the groupbreaking bit is the WEIGHT. The ipad 3/4 are just too heavy, with retina display and the bigger battery. If apple can do what they did with iphone 5s, and weight I'll buy this new big ipad in a second!
I agree. The iPad 4 weighs 652g. When she weighed the ipad 4 and ipad 5 rear shells there was a 54g weight saving just from the back shell. If we factor in the fact that the whole thing is rumoured to be 2.2mm thinner than the 9.4mm iPad 4 case that's more than a 20% decrease in the internal volume and then factor in the reduced width. With all that taken together I'm really hoping that some of the early rumours about 20% to 25% weight reductions might even have been underestimating how much Apple's been able to achieve.

Getting the weight down will also be crucial for people who use the ipad in landscape mode because right now I find the wide side bezels, which become the top and bottom bezels when used in landscape mode, are important so that my thumb can get a good grip on the bottom of the ipad when I hold it one handed so that I can counteract the weight trying to tip it away from me as I hold it. With thiner bezels it's going to be important that the torque in the hand is less so that one can grip it more lightly without it wanting to fall backwards and tip out of one's hand. Reducing the weight is important if the thin bezels are going to work.

Oh no, please don't let the "bigger = better" movement get as much momentum as in the phone section.

Oh no... Which world are you from man... Biggggerrrr is bettterrrr... I am personally not buying an iPad till they launch one with a 55" screen... I vow to stay iPadless till then... dumb guy you are... really...

I'm upgrading to the iPad 5 regardless - my iPad 2 is starting to slow down a bit and the battery isn't as great as it was 2 years ago. Can't wait for October :D

Ipads dont get slower with age. It either works or it doesn't. There is no physical harddrive in it....so no fragmentation.

Give it time. Soon we will see those ratical changes we love to see. Apple has changed their tactics in working on just improving the year ago product and then coming up with a new design/ideas for their products every 2 or 3 years. Just wait for iPhone 6. I sense that it will bring the apple we all know and love in bringing in something really new. You're just too impatient.

Minute details aside, it will be interesting to see what actual benefits the new models offer.
