Still got the 1st gen iPad here and I think it's time to upgrade. Lots of nice apps are not working on it because they require iOS 6.0+ and lots of them which do work crash occasionally/are slow. Most annoying of them being the App store, I can't even browse it normally without it crashing and returning me to pervious searches.

Like mentioned earlier, I hope they stop selling the 16 GB version and make the 32 one the entry iPad.

1st can we please stop all responding to one ridiculous post...

Anyway, I really really hope that Apple can find some neat ways to differentiate the iPad 5 from the iPad mini and other smaller tablets. I have a Nexus 7 (2013) edition right now and it is great for pure consumption, couch potato style entertainment. But it sucks for getting real work done (which is ok, I knew that going in).

I am seriously thinking about getting a larger tablet that could be used for work and the iPad 5 is probably best.

But it would be awesome if Apple did the following:

- Provide stylus support! They don't need to require stylus use like the Galaxy Note tablets with it built in but a capacitative stylus can never be as good as an active stylus and it would be great (IMHO) to use an iPad 5 as a notepad for everything!
- optimize iOS 7 for tablets and give tablet users a few (limited) OSX like features that probably wouldn't make sense on a phone. The main one would be allowing some kind of file management. It doesn't need to be crazy like Android root browsers but just a simple app that lets you manage email attachments, downloads etc. all in one place where any app can access stuff so it all doesn't have to go through dropbox.
- I guess multitasking would also be cool but to be honest I've never tried using split screens on a tablet so I don't know if that would actually be as useful as Microsoft and Samsung claim.
- in a similar manner to the iWork apps offer some other optional download apps that are geared towards prosumer productivity such as a Onenote replacement app, Preview for iPad (take pdf viewing out of iBooks please) etc.

I will probably still buy the ipad 5 without any of these additions as my curiosity about "the other side" has gotten too great but IMHO there is so much potential in the larger tablet space that right now both Apple and Google are missing (and Microsoft is at least thinking outside the box but their execution leaves a lot to be desired)

Give it time. Soon we will see those ratical changes we love to see. Apple has changed their tactics in working on just improving the year ago product and then coming up with a new design/ideas for their products every 2 or 3 years. Just wait for iPhone 6. I sense that it will bring the apple we all know and love in bringing in something really new. You're just too impatient.

Very true.

Now that Apple has determined just how few improvements they can get by with each year, they are now free to drag out any innovative ideas they do have over years. This provides them the priceless opportunity to maximize their annual profits to even higher levels, amassing more cash than ever before. A technique that will please the board and the shareholders.

I'll consider upgrading my iPad 2 when the new iPad has multi-user support. I see TouchID working brilliantly for that. Until then, I can't believe how great and future-proof the iPad 2 was!

This is something Apple should blatantly rip off from the Amazon Fire. Great feature for parents with children.

This is going to be a really lame upgrade.

  • Faster processor? Big deal, they do that every year anyway.
  • Super thin side bezels? Major downgrade. I guarantee you there will be issues with accidentally using the touch screen while holding.
  • Smaller form factor? Who cares, it's not smaller by enough to make it more portable, but it does mean that any previous iPad case won't fit.
  • Longer battery life? Who cares, nobody should be using their tablet all day anyway.

When are they going to add some real specs, like 41MP camera like Nokia has, or NFC like Samsung has, or multitasking, or 128 GB, or some function for the fingerprint sensor (which may not even be included) besides the super rare function of security from intruders?

So far there is literally zero reason for any logical person to be interested in this product. It's actually WORSE than the iPad 4. This is what happens when you trade a visionary like Steve Jobs for a beancounter like Tim Cook.

Thin bezels on the large ipad are a serious downgrade. Does Apple still even use their own products?

However the other stuff is stupid. NFC on a tablet? Dumb. 41 mb is not a great idea but on a tablet? Not a killer product. The killer features are still weight, screen, sped, and battery life. Everything else should be considered cautiously.

It's time for you to buy the MS Surface, Apple is clearly not up to your standard. We'll miss you.

The iOS updates make them slower. My iPad 1 is on iOS 6 and is unbearably slow.

How did you get iOS 6 on a 1st gen iPad? I got one as well and it won't let me install iOS 6. It's even stated everywhere, iOS 6 is for iPad 2 and newer.

TouchID, yes or no?
That's all i care.
Yes.
No. At least not in the iPad mini.
Any word if there will be stereo speakers and any chance of them being on the front?
Yes and No. Never on the front.
Ipad 2 mini - does it have Retina? All that matters.
It's not all that matters. 64-bit also matters. Retina is almost guaranteed.
Either way, I'm really looking forward to the A7X. The A7 really makes iOS 7 shine on my 5S.
The A7 chip already has a quad-core GPU. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is no special A7X version anymore.
If the iPad Mini has an A7 CPU I'll preorder two.
There is a mean possibility that the iPad mini will always be one CPU generation behind the bigger iPad.
Let's hope not.
Who told you that iPad mini is the budget tablet of Apple? iPad mini is just the small version of iPad, many people actually prefer the iPad mini to full size iPad, regardless of price and Apple knows that.
Many people also prefer cheaper stuff regardless of performance. Look at iPhone 5s and 5c. Its not uncommon for Apple to have an even so slightly cheaper model with last years CPU. Apple can't ask suppliers to build a brand new chip fab every year. They need to make use of older fabs for longer. That means they need to sell the old chips to somebody.
I've never seen in any ad or article that Apple refer to the mini as cheaper version or budget version. It might not get the touch ID which is fine, but it will and should get retina screen because at that price point it needs it to compete with likes of NEXUS 7 2013.
Apple products do not compete with non-Apple products. They compete with customer expectations. Retina in the iPad mini is just a question of space, weight and battery life. Once you've engineered Retina into the iPad mini, you can reuse the same screen for multiple years. So it won't be an expensive technology in the long run and it will be in the iPad mini regardless if Apple thinks the iPad mini is a budget product or not. Retina is an engineering problem not a pricing problem. The choice of CPU will decide if Apple sees the iPad mini at $329 as a second class device.

Now this is something to be proud of...a company that drags out innovative ideas because they have figured out they can get by with only offering a few improvements to their products, yet people will still stand in line for them and then rave about how "revolutionary" they are. PRICELESS.

+1. at least half of this thread is responses to a single troll post.

oh yes, please! I realize not everybody would care but this would be VERY useful for high school and college students. I've seen a number of my students take notes during lectures using some android tablets (don't remember the exact models). I played with a couple of them and they seemed to be almost passable although not as responsive and precise as I would like.

I also tested various styluses with Ipad 4 when shopping for an ipad and found it to be quite inadequate for this task. perhaps I didn't use the best stylus (I just used 5 or 6 different kinds that the store had) but the ones I did try were too slow and nowhere near precise enough. I also had major troubles with palm rejection.
BTW, the latter was not an issue at all on the android tablets my students used (do any of them support active styluses? that would explain it).

I have an ipad 2 and it runs fast with the IOS 7.

Now for an upgrade i'm considering an ipad 5 or an Asus TF701T.

The only thing i hate about Ipad is the rip off price of the storage upgrade. 16GB is definitely not enough. However imagine we have to fork out additional $300 for 112GB extra storage! For $300 i can get a brand new ipad mini already. Or maybe i can even get an LG G pad 8.3 with $300!

There are so many choices for the coming month. Decisions is not easy, man!!!

This is a major mistake. By making a minor change in shell size they are making the new iPad5 incompatible with cases. This is an ecological burden they need not place on the world. It also makes the iPad more fragile where they could have made it more durable. Instead they should keep the case the same size and improve the interior. More battery life, more memory, more WiFi range, more power, a SDXC card slot, more rugged.

Apple really needs to consult with me on these design changes. Sheesh...

yes,but same applies to ANY electronics manufacturer,it doesn't necessarily mean they will always have to sell the remaining old chips as a budget model.never been like this.
Apple products do not compete with non-Apple products. They compete with customer expectations.
while I personally agree and think Apple products do not compete with non-apple products (specially Macs),not everyone will agree with that.many people actually compare, say an iPad mini to a Nexus 7 and will make their decision based on the comparison,so Apple actually have to compete with others.
Retina in the iPad mini is just a question of space, weight and battery life.Retina is an engineering problem not a pricing problem.
although I personally don't care for any non Apple tablet,MANY DO.and in case of iPad mini many will compare it to Google Nexus 7.the new version of Nexus 7 has the resolution of 1,920 by 1,200 pixels (323ppi).and is thinner than the last years model (which also had higher resolution than the i Mini)that's twice the pixel density of iPad Mini (162ppi).I don't really see why it could be an engineering problem for Apple to accommodate a high resolution screen in the iPad mini 2 when likes of Asus already done it.
again a Retina screen for iPad Mini 2 it's definitelly a must.

nope

Hopefully they'll kill the 16GB

32GB ---> $499 64GB ---> $599 128GB ---> $699

I dont think they'll ever kill the 16GB, it MIGHT be in the older ipad 4 form factor, but most likely they all will have a 16GB in both models

----------

I agree. The iPad 4 weighs 652g. When she weighed the ipad 4 and ipad 5 rear shells there was a 54g weight saving just from the back shell. If we factor in the fact that the whole thing is rumoured to be 2.2mm thinner than the 9.4mm iPad 4 case that's more than a 20% decrease in the internal volume and then factor in the reduced width. With all that taken together I'm really hoping that some of the early rumours about 20% to 25% weight reductions might even have been underestimating how much Apple's been able to achieve.

Getting the weight down will also be crucial for people who use the ipad in landscape mode because right now I find the wide side bezels, which become the top and bottom bezels when used in landscape mode, are important so that my thumb can get a good grip on the bottom of the ipad when I hold it one handed so that I can counteract the weight trying to tip it away from me as I hold it. With thiner bezels it's going to be important that the torque in the hand is less so that one can grip it more lightly without it wanting to fall backwards and tip out of one's hand. Reducing the weight is important if the thin bezels are going to work.

and don't forget, we've been moving towards removing a LAYER in the screens, which could make it even lighter. I think next to the battery, then the shell, the screen is third in weight.

Yeah, whatever happened to Tim doubling down on secrecy? :p

They need the hype towards the final release. There are a lot of competition nowadays with new android devices with excellent specs. I love my ipad 2 (giving it to my mum) and my ipad mini (sold in anticipation of better things) but i'm seriously considering my options.

True, but Apple is choosing the ''thinner is better'' path because it sells...
They choose looks over practicality. They should never have made the iMac so much thinner. They took out the DVD drive and now the base model doesn't even have dedicated graphics.

There must be a large portion of people that totally missed the fact that you can get an iPad 4 now with 128 GB of NAND flash storage...

And I'm one of them, I totally forgot Apple added 128gb option.

Then it would be nice if there was a 128gb option for the iPad Mini and maybe drop the 16gb on both new iPads. Leave the current iPad Mini 16gb as their cheap iPad. :apple:

Looks like all cases from the 2-4 are about to become obsolete.

Actually if you go to target, best buy, walmart, etc you'll notice most of their cases are gone and/or marked down. This past weekend I checked out several stores and all of them, in 2 cities, had low to near nonexistent ipad cases.

I think we are about to see an update sooner rather than later.
