How are people getting cellular data connection? If I turn off the WiFi in my house my iPhone 4S just says I should connect to iTunes if I don't have WiFi.

confused too... was able to choose cellular once, popped up, but haven't been able to use it since

TRY TAKING YOUR SIM card out of your old phone before activating ... wait a couple of minutes before beginning activating ... anyone else have success this way??

I tried this and it activated right away. This is the link they sent me in the shipping e-mail.

https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/?Source=EACQ000000000000E

Got this message from that site:

ACT005: We apologize for any inconvenience. iPhone users must connect to iTunes to activate service. All other users click here to register your mobile number and update your new equipment. If you need further assistance, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500.

I ordered my phones directly from ATT (not Apple). I am able to walk through all setup screens. No activation screen every appear on the phone or in iTunes.

My phone starts up and just says No Service in the corner.

Anyone else having this problem?

FedEx delivered mine at 1433 EST and I restored and activated mine by 1505, all on the first try.

16GB, black, AT&T, 4S

Same here, but it hasn't been real long. I'll give it some time as I read more posts.

turn off your wifi connection

Once wifi is selected, how do you turn it off to try cellular connection?

When you're going through the setup questions, select your wifi ssid. You'll have an option to forget this wifi connection. When you do that you should get an option to use the cellular network instead.

I didn't have any luck activating through the cellular network either so I don't think it's really worth it.

Just received the phone about 15 minutes ago. Plugged it in to the charger and powered it up, connected to wifi, went through the setup, activated 1st try. Total time was about 4-5 minutes. I feel bad for those having to continuously try activating.

Woo hoo!

Yay! Turned off location services and it worked the first time! Probably a coincidence, but who cares! Over 4 hours of trying, and I'm up and running!!!

on technical support chat with AT&T. One thing, she says old phone must be off to activate. will update.

They had me do several things, but now it says the sim card does not match the sim card on the account. I read it to them and they say it does. They can't help me.

----------

The SIM card in your iPhone does not match the SIM card associated with your account.
To activate your iPhone with this account, please use the SIM card associated with your account. Please insert the SIM card provided with your iPhone, and try again.

but It does. I have triple verified it and so did she. Anyone else getting this?

Methods I've tried:

link to ATT to activate (error message but I bought through Apple)

phone w/wifi

phone with cellular

phone with either of the above with location services on & off

SIM out of old phone

Old phone off

Dialing 611 (again, I bought through apple so this didn't work)

iTunes

iTunes & phone at same time

and pretty much anything else that has been posted in this thread. I'm in hour 4 and still waiting to get active. Hopefully soon.....

Now mine is stuck at the this may take up to 3 minutes screen. Its been on the same screen for the past 15 minutes or so. All other previous tries I would get the e-mail notification + try again later screen.

I wonder what this means

After 2 hrs of not getting too far, I'm now finally getting at least to the "we'll email you" stage but I'm still trying (and to those of you concerned by that, I'm ignoring you). I'm really good at this after refreshing at apple.com for 45 minutes after 12:01am on 10/7.

Originally, I had enabled wifi and only had 1 bar even when switching to 3G.

Here's what I'm doing differently:

  • turned off my old phone
  • powered off the 4S
  • disabled location services

PRESTO, still nothing, but getting much farther along in the process!

Nothing. I had that happen 1x and I let it go for 20 - 30 min before I just started over.

Just got a report from a friend that they have been in an AT&T store since 12 CDT and still waiting to get their phone activated.

It really is maddening that customers of AT&T such as myself spend so much money for their services and so much for the phones, yet when it comes to these scenarios they just completely fail. I continue to be an idiot and stick with AT&T. Well that was my vent session. Going on hour 3 trying to activate and nothing. Been trying all methods. I feel like its just going to get worse as people get off work on the east coast and then west coasters get off work.

Apparently, AT&T operates from a different planet with a different time system. In addition, they don't understand the concept of activation.

This is freaking ridiculous
