This is totally plausible with Gen 1 Airpods. Especially if they introduce Gen 4 before the new iPhone.

Any other scenario I don't believe is plausible.

Yes it does make sense. That is like saying nobody buys the iPhone 11 pro because there is the 11r which is cheaper.
It’s not like that at all. If apple gives away free AirPods with every iphone purchase, nobody will buy AirPods because they will already have them.

You can’t compare that to “apple makes a slightly cheaper product and people still buy the expensive product.” To make the comparison right, it would be like if apple gave away FREE iphone 11rs. You can bet the market for pros would dwindle pretty fast.

Report: Apple will give AirPods with iphones

Apple: what if we gave headphones that don’t work with peoples iPads and Macs?

Wasn’t this rumored in 2017 for the iPhone/AirPod combo? [I’m confident it was.] Point is, this isn’t happening. These types of rumors are simply for clicks from my perspective. Plus, could Apple meet the supplier relations to pair every iPhone with a pair of entry level AirPods? doubt that very much.

Ridiculous.
Iphones all ready have a terrible price tag, apple is not going to give you anything so that means a even more ridiculous price tag for a stupid phone.
Not going to happen.

How are Bluetooth earphones any more “proper” a replacement for the headphone jack earphones than lightning earphones?

Two reasons. Apple's ****** wired headphones and their lightning to jack adapter are such poor quality that you have to replace them several times a year due to the copper breaking inside, causing signal failure.
Also, you can't charge and listen to music at the same time with the lightning headphones. A problem introduced by Apple with the omission of the headphone jack. One they never provided an elegant solution for unless you buy a wireless charger and have an iPhone that knows what to do with it.

Not gonna happen. Apple already faces supply constraints with them and now they want to bundle them with their best-selling product?
General topic or observation question: (not an attack on you) Is there still a consensus that they’re out of this world overpriced by 2x or 3x and anyone who buys them is just drinking the kool-aide?

I mean, you’re right and all - but Apple could do it and noone but weirdos would complain about it. Like those that claim stupid conspiracies about how Apple is bank rolling whole products on the replacement headphone dongle sales.

Perhaps I am off my rocker, but as popular of an accessory as the AirPods are and as much kerfuffle is made about how extravagantly overpriced they are - the money they bring in - I can't believe is but a drop in the bucket compared to the real money makers of the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and laptops. Oh, right, and that monitor stand.

This isn't a good idea if they are trying to work on increasing profitability on the product lines. Maybe they could sell it as some sort of package, but just throwing them in for free? Yeah I'm not seeing it happening.

I hope not. That would really increase the price of the already crazy priced iPhones.

What I hope they would do, is a bundle discount when purchasing an iPhone with AirPods or AirPods Pro.
That would essentially be one in the same. Ever bought a combo meal from a fast food joint? Something like $.50 less if you get a combo versus buying them a la carte.

I have always found them to be underpriced (relative to the competition) at least.

In fact, that's the trend I have been seeing with apple products in a while. While it is true that they have been getting more expensive on the high end, the price of the entry level model has actually grown at a slower rate than inflation.

For instance, the Apple Watch now has a $199 entry-level option, while the existence of the AirPods Pro doesn't negate the existence of the base level AirPods. There's the very capable iPhone 11 (or even the iPhone 8 or SE) if you can't stomach the price of the 11 pro max and the entry level 10.2" iPad still represents excellent value for money. Many of their apps and services benefit from family sharing plans, and unlike companies like dropbox, I actually get to "right-size" the amount of cloud storage I need and pay accordingly (currently paying $1 a month for 50gb of iCloud storage, which more than suffices for me). Oh, and a free year of TV+.

I think much of the criticism stems from the tech press making it sound like Apple only sells one "true" version of their products (ie: the most current and expensive model) and assumes there is no reason to get anything else. Even weirder is the assertion that users somehow have to upgrade every year, when in reality, apple products easily last for several years (not least because of their long-term software support), and there is little reason to always go for the latest and greatest.

One side-effect of Apple growing as much as it has is that its product lineup has grown way more complicated. There are now 3 versions of AirPods, 4 lines of apple watches (with god knows how many bands), 5? iPad models, and the iPhone lineup takes the cake, with the 2019 offering alone having 42 different versions (3 different phones, each with 3 storage options and 10 total colours to choose from), and that's before factoring in the older models.

But bottom line is that it has never been cheaper to enter the apple ecosystem with the array of apple products that best suits your budget. An iPhone 8 with series 3 Apple Watch and normal AirPods still gives you the core of the apple experience.

make it US$ 2000 for the 64GB model, and also throw in a glass protector, can Apple handle it? haha

The old wired headphones that used the headphone port also had crappy connectors. In fact, my lightning earphones have lasted much longer that the old kind.

And who is charging and listening to music with the stock earphones at the same time? If you are charging you are not out and about (usually).

They do include earbuds in the box, but i think that's only because their cheap.. If you make sometime more expensive, you'll have to offset the extra to the customer, which means its not gonna be the same price if Airpods were in..

That's allot less money added up Apple will loose, than kept separately. I could see why you wouwld wanna bundle ..new style... "people are paying a price for the phone anyway, whats an extra amount gonna do."

How about save some resources by having two SKUs, no headphones or wireless? Although I personally use them, I must be in the minority and I think it’s time to get rid of the old wired ones, which used to be cool is now an embarrassing tangled mess, and I know some people that never take them out of the box.

If so, at least I can sell them for a bit of cash, since they don't stay my ears during any normal activity. The corded ones basically sit in the original box forever.

Irrelevant. You asked about BT vs. wired.

Who can say. The point is that we have a generation of iPhones that is hamstrung like this. Not too dissimilar to that horrible wireless Magic mouse you had to flip on it's back to charge it.

With another price increase I take it?

And if the 2020 iPhone switched to USB C (though for some reason I'm starting to lose hope) would they include a USB C to USB C cable for the iPhone and an USB C to Lightning cable for the charging case? Or a USB C to Lightning adapter?

What’s the difference between this, and simply buying AirPods separately?
