i just don't understand why it's free for iPhone users, but iPod Touch people have to pay.

iPhone users continue to pay for their iPhone each month, once you buy your iPod, it's yours. The iPhone was created more as a PDA/Media Device. Your touch is JUST a media device. By paying 20 bucks you can give it some more functionality.

No - this analogy is all wrong...

2) This is not a 'point' release - it's a suite of applications that never shipped with the product I purchased nor where they ever promised for it.

Umm, you sir are wrong. These 5 apps are INCLUDED in the 1.1.3 firmware. The thing that you buy from iTunes? A 20KB file. All it does it it modifies the plist file (in Springboard) to ENABLE the apps to appear on the home screen thing. How is a 20KB file worth $20??

These are the same type of people complaining in this thread that were complaining when Apple cut the price of the 8 GB iPhone.

Because it enables added functionality that you did not pay for to begin with. Done.

The same way that those five apps are. You bought an iPod. Apparently few people can grasp that concept. It doesn't matter if it runs the same OS as the iPhone or if it has the capability to run iPhone apps. You bought a portable media player. And now all people can do is get upset when Apple offers to improve it for a nominal fee. If you were happy with the iPod touch when you bought it, you can still be happy with it without paying $20 for apps. So stop complaining.

If you go by that logic then how is it that people who bought the original AppleTV are getting the update for the AppleTV 2 (which contains added functionality that they did not pay for to begin with) for free? Apple has a pretty huge double standard here.

Not really. The AppleTV was a flop, they will take a short term hit in order to try to ensure its success in the long run.

I'm going to repost one of my previous posts. Please READ it:

You bought a Touch. They added functionality to it. You can pay for that added functionality, or not. It is a loss for Apple to give the programs to Touch users for free because they would be making no money on it. They calculated that they would make more money by charging for it than if a few defectors got angry and decided not to purchase an Apple product in the future. If you're mad about it, then don't purchase anything and be quiet. But until then, you all sound childish for thinking you somehow "deserve" this update for free. I don't give a rat's (blank) if it wouldn't have cost Apple that much more to make it available to you for free, they're in the business to make money. I bought my Powerbook without iLife 07. They released iLife 07 without a hardware upgrade to my Powerbook and charged for it. I didn't cry about it.

Because they're choosing to give it out for free. Vista is buggy, and they'll be fixing that among some other things. You payed for a Touch. They are adding new PROGRAMS to it. You can either pay to get the new programs, or not. Stop being babies. Oh My God.

The $20 is no problem to pay, but i agree that it is total BS. I mean, early iPhone adopters got $100 BACK! WTF Steve! Cut us a break here bud.

First off, you take a RISK whenever you purchase a new device, period. You can't always have the latest greatest thing at the time and not expect something better to come out later.
No, I disagree. I think this is a bit different. These apps existed on iPhone at the time of purchase, so a lot of people assume it was a simple matter to make them work on the touch, as the two products share a lot of parts. I mean in the end, yeah, you paid for the then existing product, so legally Apple can charge what it wants now for added functionality. However, it is definitely bad PR. Besides, $20 is substantially more than $5 that it asked for 11n functionality last year. If it is just about a matter of filling out a SOX related form, I don't think they would need to charge that much.

Well... by offering everyone who already has an ATV the ability to rent movies, apple has the potential to make more money... so the free update is good for apple.

Apple refer to it as an upgrade for the iPod Touch. After adding the apps - and the new enhancements to Springboard that aren't applied until you do pay - you're therefore left with an iPod, but according to Apple a better iPod than the one you bought from the shop. The whole 'it was only ever meant to be a portable media player, so ****' just doesn't make any sense in this context.

I for one would have welcomed Apple explaining clearly when both products were launched that iPhone buyers could expect indefinite free feature upgrades, but iPod Touch users should expect to pay for them by default (on the Archos model). The lack of transparency and underhand feeling of this move has left a bitter taste in many peoples' mouths. As for the need to secure a future revenue stream from the iPods: well, turning people away from jailbreaking and on to the SDK bandwagon was the way to do that - which plenty of people seemed ready for, but no longer as many I suspect.

But I think you probably already know this. Your posts so far in this thread have been so perfectly devoid of logic, not to say content, that I can only imagine that you're either a contrarian by nature, or an Apple shill who's paid to disrupt discussion in threads like these.

Well, people can't assume that Apple will give them something for free. It doesn't matter. People got the apps that they asked for. End of story. Doesn't matter if they have to pay.

I don't know about you but my OS X upgrades came with Mail and Weather widgets, and I paid over $100 for them. Who's to say that the price of those apps aren't rolled into the OS X price? Yes it appears free since it just comes with your computer/OS, but you paid for the computer/OS to get the apps. Show me where to download Mail.app for free, or show me where to download the default Weather widget...

Use some logic here...your'e not paying $100 for weather and mail. Yes they seem "free" but when taken into account, theyre prrobably only a few dollars.

I wonder if Steve Jobs assumed you'd give him head for free.

For those who think you get the iPhone as part of a contract, here in the UK you pay for the phone (£269) then pay monthly for the contract to the network provider. A large part of this, especially with me, was that it seemed to be assumed that the update would give you all these new features, such as the home screen, but you would pay the £12/$20 to get these five applications. I can't see how the home screen will cost me that much given I do not want the applications. I want to play music and watch videos on it and browse the web using the quick links they, I assumed, would provide on the home screen. If I could find some way to remove the hidden applications without jailbreaking it I would do so to free up more room for music and videos.

It's not about the money

This does little to entice jailbreakers to go "legit" and add apple apps. It's not the fee that upset me but the history of apple. We have seen the iPhone get free apps and updates and it needs to do this to stay competitive. iTouch has no competition from other mp3 players so they charge us.

$20 multiplied by the 1/2 million or more iTouch players sold is greedy. I would have paid $1.99 for the update with no quams. It is the fact that I feel like I'm paying for the free updates that iphone and apple TV got by purchasing apps that existed when iTouch was released and should have been bundled from the start. It's the everybody got something but me feeling.

It's not about the money it's about apple saying thanks for buying this and showing it to your friends so they would get one and hey here are some free apps (that everyone hence forth will get) to show our appreciation.

I paid the stupid $20 for the new apps but hated doing so because it seems to be way to much money for only 5 apps. I keep asking myself why I paid it then....guess I wanted maps and mail on my Touch.

But I really hate the new dock!

The iPhone has only got an update with iTunes. That was on the touch before the iPhone. Remember, it's an iPod. Completely different product.

Apple TV didn't really get much of an update. It is mainly to support movie rentals. If you were happy with the product that you bought on the day you got your touch, you should still be happy with it. Other products are completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter what people are getting now. If you really want the apps, give them the $20. Sure, it would be nice if they were free. But Apple is in the game to make money. They've already got a hold on the music market, so charging $20 for an optional upgrade (that isn't even necessary) is not such a bad move. It's a good source of profit.

Now what would have happened if they would have released 1.1.3 without the apps? Everyone would have been mad that Apple took away their applications. Well, now they're giving you a way to do it in a legit manner. Personally, I would rather fork over the money than sit around at each update wondering "Is it safe to upgrade my iPod? It could get bricked or I could lose all of my apps."

Believe it or not, Apple is in the game for money. It doesn't matter if you want to pay or not. It's their product, their software, their decision. It's obvious that you want these apps. If you want your warranty as well, they're advising you to get them this way. If you don't like it this way, go buy a Zune.

As someone who's been a manager for most of my professional career, I can tell you that your view is very anti-growth. I have already said that Apple can charge if they want to. It's up to them, but that doesn't mean it is smart.

Throwing iPod Touch users a bone by giving them these apps for free would have been smart. Most users would upgrade to the new firmware and would have left hacking behind forever. Certainly no one could complain at all, and Apple's rep improves, their customers are more satisfied, and they keep and build the user base.

Instead, Apple has decided to take a quick $20 and piss off a lot of their user base. It helps shrink user base, not grow it. It is a short-sighted tactic, and they are doing it over something they don't have to charge over.

Like I said, I understand wanting to make money, but I feel this is just a stupid move.

It was either this on the touch or lose the carriers of the iPhone. You choose. All the money goes to the carriers.
