Akonradi, an update is an update they are all significant, though I would say that it is a significant update as it actually makes the Apple TV worth buying.

iTunes app appeared on iTouch at launch your correct, it was GIVEN to iPhone free. Maps, mail, etc. appeared on iphone but not GIVEN to us.

if the unit remained the same and all future itouch buyers had to pay for the update seperately it would be fair But this is not a Mac it is an iPod and this is unprecedented behavior for iPod.

I don't think you will change your irrational logic but nothing you will say will make me feel better about Apples move here... or dislodge $20 from my wallet.

After reading many posts, one thing I am tired of is hearing people say, "What do you expect, it is an Ipod, not a PDA." That is so stupid. When the Ipod came out, it just played music. Then it got photos and then it got videos. So are you all saying that the Ipod shouldn't have gotten photos and videos because it was made to play music only? No you wouldn't. Well this is the same situation. They can make the Ipod whatever they want it to be. Not just a MP3 player.

I'll join this rant

What a petty move on Apple's part. I've already filed my complaint and emailed request for full refund. My wife got it engraved for me for Christmas gift or I'd have already returned it for all the WiFi troubles I'm dealing with (it only connects about 1/3 the time).

What a load of crap from Apple. Obviously their success is going to their heads, they're getting greedy and at this rate (after the iPhone early adopter penalty) will leave themselves open for a huge backlash.

The screen it too small to be a practical surfing device anyway, nifty touch commands aside, it takes 4 times longer to read anything when it is working.

*&^%#*&@^%$&*@#^%$

I registered here just so I could vent.

The iPhone is the premier product. It costs more, needs a contract, and produces Apple more money. Of course it will get better features. The iPhone also came first. That doesn't mean that every single feature of the iPhone has to be on every product with some similarities. You must have been content when you bought it. If this $20 improvement package is changing that, something went wrong on your end, not Cupertino's.

I paid the stupid $20 for the new apps but hated doing so because it seems to be way to much money for only 5 apps. I keep asking myself why I paid it then....guess I wanted maps and mail on my Touch.

But I really hate the new dock!

How did it feel when you bent over? Curious, just curious :)

Nonsense. Profit margins are the highest on Apple's iPod lines...not the iPhone. In fact, you could argue that the shuffle is Apple's premier product from your logic. I don't care if the iPhone came first or not. Nothing in your post is logical at all.

Oh quit complaining. You can't compare it to an iPhone since iPhone users are paying a minimum of $60 a month. You have to pay a one-time fee of $20. Boo hoo.

And the argument of new buyers get it free is the same as Leopard and new computers. Leopard comes free with new computers but existing users have to upgrade.

The Apple TV update is free because Apple will make money off it by you renting movies. They won't make money off you with the iPod touch features.

Every MW something like this happens

i do completely agree that us early ipod touch owners should not have to pay for apps and features that already were in existence. I myself am not a jailbreaker so i went ahead and purchased the apps since it benefited me. I do think one of these days apple will learn their lesson and drop the price of the apps and refund the difference to people like me.

that is all.

Um, why are you guys saying you don't agree with it, and then you continue to purchase the update? That doesn't make sense at all.

probally cause people dont mind spending 20 bucks. look i say the same thing 2 but heres what im debating at I jailbroken my ipod touch mainly for the stuff we got today the only other program i really used was blackjack but i can see for the people who use the other apps that you can get i can understand too as well. so for me im going to upgrade and use the official apps. i really liked the maps feature and the fact to i can now use all my emails including yahoo is a benefit.

By buying this update, you are only proving to Apple and Co. that they can take advantage of the consumer. Screw it. Until the update is free, I will never ever update.

Saying that AAPL makes money off of the contracts, I don't think so. And the iPhone has a pretty high profit margin. Put those two together and Apple makes more money off of the iPhone. When Steve talks about the great new products of '07, he says iPhone and new iPods. Not iPod touch. That pretty much indirectly says it all.

And the shuffle wouldn't be their premier product, their RAM upgrades would be.

You are paying for cellphone service! How is that even comparable???

The same way that those five apps are. You bought an iPod. Apparently few people can grasp that concept. It doesn't matter if it runs the same OS as the iPhone or if it has the capability to run iPhone apps. You bought a portable media player. And now all people can do is get upset when Apple offers to improve it for a nominal fee. If you were happy with the iPod touch when you bought it, you can still be happy with it without paying $20 for apps. So stop complaining.

People can complain all they want if they are not happy.

Apple suck.

here's a thought: don't use the new software then.
if you see value, you'll spend the tiny amount to get those apps.
it's quite simple.

heck, for another $2, you can probably buy a box of kleenex too :)

Your analogy is bad...the Touch didn't get a price drop, it got a price increase. Christmas buyers just payed $20 more for their iPod than today's buyers for an e-mail client and a couple of widgets.

There's nothing wrong with the analogy, you just need to look at it form a different angle. Today's users are forced into buying a $20 set of apps for the iPod Touch that they may or may not want. If those apps are worth $20 then the iPod Touch is $380 of the $400 spent. New users don't get the choice of whether they want the $20 apps or not. If you don't think they're worth the price don't buy them. New iPod Touch buyers aren't given the choice to save $20 by not buying the apps.

Think of it as finding the perfect car, but it already has the window tinting done. You could have lived without it and it would be $500 cheaper without the tinting, but you're stuck with it and the extra cost if you want the car.

That doesn't mean that they have legitimate reasons to complain.

Amen

It's not! But you want it to be. You want the touch to receive the same treatment as the iPhone.
Pretty much true. Just because it looks similar does not mean that Apple is required to do whatever people want for free.

The iPhone came out. Then people wanted an iPhone-Phone=iPod touch.
Apple gave us that.

But then everyone got mad because they didn't get their apps. Most people said back in September that they were willing to pay for them. A lot of us sent requests to Apple saying that we would gladly pay for these apps. Now we get the apps and most people are angry that they're not free.

Another thing is why is it that the early adopters of the iphone get money back and a free update, and we have to pay. This suxs.
