I thought the iPhone'rs had to pay something like $60 a month and you're worried about a tiny $20 1-time payment to get iPhone-like functionality... that's terrible.

Edit: I just found out that Apple legally has to have us pay for these new features because of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarbanes-Oxley_Act

How the hell that SOx law has to be applied here in Canada and the rest of the world??? Duhhh, Yeah I imagine. Screw you! f**ing Apple Marketing Execs!

Is not about the $20 it is all about the principle.

Today I am embarrassed of being a mac zealot.

A)You paid $300-$400 dollars for this device, it won't kill you to pay an extra $20.

B)akonradi made a spectacular post. If you wanted an iPhone, you would have bought an iPhone.

C)At least Apple is offering you these apps. They didn't just put them on the iPhone and walk away. You would be complaining if they didn't offer them, you're complaining now. Life isn't free.

A)No, is not about the $20, $4.99 or $1.99

B)Spectacular post? The iPhone will be available in Canada in 2012.

C)I think they should have never offered the upgrade for a premium. I have the right to complain. I am honest, I do not need this update. I am just upset!

For those who talk about Iphone users having to pay $60+ a month:
You say that Ipod touch users shouldn't be complaining about the $20 because we don't have to pay $60 month or you say just get an Iphone.
The reason we don't pay $60 is because we do not get cell phone service nor, internet access anywhere I go.
The reason why I went with the Ipod over the Iphone is because of AT&T's poor service in my area. My family had them for 4 years and I had at least 3 dropped calls a day. If it wasn't for this I would have an Iphone.
So for some, the Iphone is not a choice so this is the reason I want apps that are on the Iphone to be on my Ipod. After all the Iphone is a phone that as other apps on it for nothing. Why can't the Ipod be a music player that has other apps for nothing?

Well first of all I would like to say that I feel your pain. Us iPhone users went through this whole mess (in a much larger scale) when they dropped the price on us by $200. Secondly the iPhone is a smart phone, therefore is advertised to include those extra features. I just hope that most of you ready to burn down Apple, were not the same individuals telling us iPhone users "You knew it was going to happen.", "You can afford it". bit not so long ago.

Don't make me go back to that thread and take down names! :D To the rest, I feel you!

im pissed too

like everyone else, i can pay the $20 but feel it is unfair. this update should be free. period. i love apple and i dont understand how steve jobs can let his marketing team to make this move.

It's ONLY $20!!!!! What is wrong with you people. You'll spend that on a couple of mochafrappucinos at Starbucks. All that new software for less than 5% of the original purchase price. Whatta bunch of whiners. If you can afford $400 for an iPod, what's all the griping about $20 that extends its usefulness 10-fold? Geez! Or did your mommy and daddy buy you the iPod?
If MS were charging for a Zune software update I wonder what you'd say...

It's a complete farce.

As someone who's been a manager for most of my professional career, I can tell you that your view is very anti-growth. I have already said that Apple can charge if they want to. It's up to them, but that doesn't mean it is smart.

Throwing iPod Touch users a bone by giving them these apps for free would have been smart. Most users would upgrade to the new firmware and would have left hacking behind forever. Certainly no one could complain at all, and Apple's rep improves, their customers are more satisfied, and they keep and build the user base.

Instead, Apple has decided to take a quick $20 and piss off a lot of their user base. It helps shrink user base, not grow it. It is a short-sighted tactic, and they are doing it over something they don't have to charge over.

Like I said, I understand wanting to make money, but I feel this is just a stupid move.

Wow, you must not be very successful as a manager to make such an illogical statement.

So you actually think the number of iPod touch users will DROP as a result of Apple's decisions with regard to the 1.1.3 + apps upgrade? You honestly believe that they will have a smaller user base for this product at this time next year? Next month? Next week??

I'm glad you aren't managing anything for me.

I think this is a mayor update for the itp and in the future new apps will also cost money .

Now i can tell you that my itp is the best ipod/pda i had in my life.

My 2 centavos

Saludos

I knew it wasn't an email device when I bought it. Now it can be.

So £12.99 to upgrade is excellent value for money. I have no problem with it all.

The other apps/features are a bonus (though not very useful)

It's a deeply puzzling decision.

Certainly, there will be users in countries that don't have the iTunes Store, who won't be able to get the upgrade.

I wonder if this is a decision forced by accounting. It's not really going to make Apple a ton of money. I remember there was a similar upgrade charge for something else a while back, apparently for accounting reasons.

I think the general consensus is that its more a matter of principle than cost and I have to say I agree. Apple knew that Leopard was coming and they knew users would be buying macbooks before its release and so they offered free upgrades. Likewise with the ipod touch apps updates, they knew it was coming and they also knew that heaps of touches would be sold during xmas and yet they didnt offer the upgrade for free. Thats just not right.

Those of you who say suck it you've paid X amount for the ipod already whats 20 more. You mangs need to realize that just because someone has 100 dollars, it doesn't mean they have 100 more lying around. Some people save hard to buy things like ipod touches. Kids for example, would have been saving money all year to buy themselves an ipod for christmas, now they need to blow another 20 bucks.

I think that this serves as a great reminder to us all that, although you guys can trash microsoft about charging for stuff, Apple are a money making machine as well and this just illustrates that point. I think its sad that this is happening. For the record, I don't like it. =(

One general consensus from this thread: Suck It Up.

You paid $300-$400 dollars for this device, it won't kill you to pay an extra $20.

akonradi made a spectacular post. If you wanted an iPhone, you would have bought an iPhone. You bought an iPod Touch, it was what you wanted. So now you're complaining that Apple's charging you $20 for new applications. Why? You wanted what you got but are now jealous of what happened. It's technology, things happen. You can't expect things to stop after you buy something.

Most people out there don't even need this update. They won't even use it. For the people out there that want it and will use it, they will buy it. It's that simple.

At least Apple is offering you these apps. They didn't just put them on the iPhone and walk away. You would be complaining if they didn't offer them, you're complaining now. Life isn't free.

The problem for me with paying for the apps (and i did before i knew this) is that if you buy an iPod Touch today, they drop the price 20 bucks so you can then upgrade it. Anotherwords, the same iPod Touch bought today includes the applications. That is the problem for me.

Why, guys. Why? It's just $20. Just pay it and stop the ****. :D I mean... honestly... this won't happen again. Take my word for it. ;)

Who said you had to buy it?

I'm annoyed that i have to pay for it because if i went and bought one today i wouldn't have to. If you bought today and still had to pay for the upgrade, i WOULD NOT be annoyed AT ALL. It's not a 2nd generation iPod Touch was announced and i'm upset that i don't have new features. It's the same iPod. Apple is charging $20 less for people who buy a iPod Touch today, so when they go home, they can then upgrade it. Does that seem right?

I can't stand comments like this. "Who said you had to buy it?"

Here here!

And also worth it for the extra Kudos today from those who saw mail and Google Maps - granted it was those who went ooooooh when I first got it!

Like most things, if you want that functionality then go for the upgrade, if you don't, then don't. After all, it still plays music :)

If instead of including the apps with new purchases, what if the price of the iPod Touch had been dropped by $20? Would you still be mad?

look at it this way...

At first I agreed that it was just a money grab on Apples' part....but I got to thinking that, Hey, Wasn't it worth it to have had a couple of months use or whatever time of the touch?.....say on the other hand, that Apple didn't release the touch until all the software that they had in mind was ready?...like now?....we wouldn't have had the use of ours nor the showing off fun of the new gadget etc?....Look at the $20 as a fee for having the bragging rights of being able to have the new prototype units earlier......

Ah... i get your point. But still, then whoever gets one now, then gets a discount on it. Whatever.

I'm so done with this topic.

I have to say, i love the applications and they are worth the $20. It really makes this $400 iPod(obviously it was meant to be more than a music player) worth the money.

I had a frown on my face, but I surely laid down my $20. It is weird that they would charge. Obviously the tech was there, it is in the iPhone, and the iTouch has the same software image, as was revealed with the early shipment of the itouch units. Why on earth they would charge for features that they should have had already is beyond me.

This does reveal that either Jobs is a changed man, or the prospective powers at Apple have a very strong voice. Extra for features that we should have had? Blatant gimping of Time Machine Backups to create a market for this stupid Time Crapsule? I have never seen a business slap consumers in the face so straight-forward in my life.

Wow, 10 pages of crying and moaning over $20.
This is utterly ridiculous. Why should you get the apps for free??

Ah... i get your point. But still, then whoever gets one now, then gets a discount on it. Whatever.

It's the nature of technology. Prices drop, devices get faster and have more memory, features are added. Any tech you buy today will probably be either cheaper or obsolete within a month.

For those who got them for Christmas, you've had the iPod Touch for over 20 days, has it brought you more than $1 a day's worth of pleasure from using it? If you had had to wait until now to get it, would you have paid $20 more to get it at Christmas?

Effectively new buyers got a $20 price cut today. But they are forced to spend that $20 on the Application suite. If you wouldn't have been mad at a $20 price cut you shouldn't be outraged about being charged for added functionality.
