That was it thanks. But it only says display sleep not computer. That was removed. Anyhow this new style is similar to OS9 back in the day. You hover over the apple and then system preferences or what ever it was called and the if you click on the arrow it shows the list without clicking on it and showing the whole menu. The other way as in Big Sur and Monterey and before was better. I click on system preferences and get to see all the icons and then decide. This new list is confusing. Seeing all the icons on a folder like view was better in my opinion.
you've been on the beta less than a day. give it time, and you'll get comfortable with it. then one day, it will feel absolutely right (and probably, on that day, apple will change it up again 🤣)

after a few days, i found i much-preferred it to the old sys prefs. seems logical, more functional, more coherent. of course, not everyone would agree.....

again... it's your opinion, not a fact.
It's a fact that the app's design disregards Apple's own guidelines and best practises. Which, you know, were established to ensure usability and consistency.

try the 'search' window in system settings, and you'll find everything (for example, type 'display') but hey! it's under 'Lock Screen'.
In what world is this a logical place for this setting, when "Displays" or "Battery" would have made more sense?

You can't even claim that would be more consistent with iOS, because there, the corresponding setting is found under "Display & Brightness".

give it time, and you'll get comfortable with it. then one day, it will feel absolutely right
That's your opinion.

Also I just noticed sound is missing from the top menu bar. There is no option to add it to the menu bar.

Ok, I only just installed Ventura and my first observation was that the settings gui changed, for me for the better: more intuitive.

For the rest, I didn’t see any change (yet) and am underwhelmed. Maybe the time of “new OS - new look and feel” has passed already some time ago. I’m getting old 😉.

what's new in ventura

but why do people forget about all the work that happens 'under the hood'? personally, am much more interested in a fast, stable OS than, say, stage manager, or live captions in facetime (both of which are good things).

i want my mac to run my apps well (the apple ones, the non-apple ones), and ventura does that. 👍

I can only fully agree with you. I sometimes do miss the "Christmas morning" feeling of a new OS that looks and feels completely new as in the past. I told you I felt like getting old

More on (your) topic: until now it runs very fine and stable even still a beta (and in the older days betas meant asking for trouble when installing).

Don't like the new Displays and Wallpaper settings, especially when using multiple monitors that are the same model.

In older MacOS versions, you can identify monitors by clicking on Arrange, then clicking on a monitor to show a red highlight on the screen. This is useful if you have multiple monitors that are the same model because they all have the same size, shape and are listed with the same name. But in Monterey and Ventura, going to Arrange and clicking on a monitor does nothing.

In older MacOS versions, opening Displays preferences would put a settings window on each monitor, with the specific settings for that monitor, so you know which one you are configuring. Again, that makes it easier to work with multiple monitors that are the same model. But in Monterey and Ventura, there is only the single window interface where you have to first click on one of the monitors in the list and hope that you selected the correct one.

Same issue when configuring wallpapers. Where it used to put a settings window on each monitor, now you have to click on a monitor in the list and hope that you selected the correct one.

The new Displays and Wallpaper settings look like they were worked on by summer interns who have never used MacOS before, and did not think to test with multiple identical monitors connected. It resembles the terrible Microsoft Windows display settings.

In System Preferences on previous MacOS versions, I always set it to display alphabetically instead of groups. Every operating system manufacturer has their own idea of how things should be grouped, and dealing with different groupings on different systems is tiresome. Too bad you can't set alphabetical listing in places with a long list of applications such as iCloud settings, where the applications are listed in random order.

After reading through this thread, I'm astonished to learn that so many people spend so much time in the System Preferences app. Here I thought I was the typical user who spent about 15 minutes total over the course of a year in the app (usually after a major OS update where Apple added a new feature or two that required me to go adjust the setting once).

The red highlight still exists in Vuntura. Go to Arrange and click on a monitor and you will see a red highlight showing the selected monitor.

It’s too jumbled together and text heavy.

It’s like trying to read a manual. Advanced users will get used to it but casual computer users who only going into preferences once a month will have a hard time.

So it’s not user friendly. macOS should be equally friendly for newbies, casual users and advanced users
For me, coming to MacOS from IOS it’s a vast improvement, but I guess that’s because I used IOS first, I think whatever you first used you Will be most comfortable with

Do you think that if I created an app that had Aqua UI elements from Snow Leopard would not be criticized for looking "dated"?
In my eye you'll be a hero because Aqua was much more pleasant. Not sure why Apple is still calling it that when it's a completely different thing now.

Well, if you multi-boot, try to deal with Universal Control reordering display positions, a range of apps requiring privileges that Apple seems to reset periodically you will be back on Settings multiple times a day.

BTW, Universal Control us at the top of the "old" Monterey version, while you have to click down in Ventura. Not an improvement.

what's the percentage of mac users who do that? and we're still in beta, so... not unreasonable that there would be issues with less-common scenarios.

anyway hopefully it gets sorted out
