A friend at my job told me he dropped his new i5 onto tile, slid off a desser at about... 3-4 feet.

Phone has a slight ding/bezel chip nothing major. Asked me if I thought the phone would still functional normal.... Thoughts?

Should he have concern over speed, signal, etc?

To make a long story short. A co-worker dropped my new iPhone 5 at work on the asphalt of our parking lot. Cracked glass near the camera and dented aluminium on the band with hole enough for dust to go in.

Have an appointment with a Genius Bar tomorrow to see what I can do. What are my options to those who has a similar problem?

-I don't have applecare+ because it was a white one and was awaiting to exchange it for a black one before buying it.

-Im willing to purchase a new one or a replacement one. How much will it cost me, full price or replacement price? My co-working is forking up the funds for this mess.

When I get the new or replacement phone, will I still be able to purchase AppleCare+ like I originally intended?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Moral of the story, don't let incompetent co-workers ever look at new gadgets.

Thanks!

You just have to show it off at your home in a carpeted room!! Seriously!! (While on the floor, of course!)

I'd be devastated. I have handed my phone over a few times already and it makes me nervous every time! People wanna see it though, so i'm not gonna be a douche and say no. Sorry to hear!

Your co-worker should offer to pay for it. If I dropped somebody's gadget, that would be the minimum I offer.

not sure how much clearly i can make it

I don't think you should make your co-worker pay for it. You were the one who chose not to put a case on it, and allow him to handle the phone. This one is on you pal.

I would HATE to be the co worker just thinking about having to see you everyday and knowing I broke your brand new phone lol

Technically, you could call Apple within 30 days and get AppleCare+...I wouldn't do it personally since it is buying insurance after you had an accident, but Apple will let you do it. Then, it will only cost you $50. I will leave the ethical part up to you. :)

Wrong. If you want AppleCare after you've already purchased, you MUST make a genius appointment so the phone can be inspected. They're called geniuses not idiots.

No you don't. I bought AppleCare for my iphone 5 and I live 2.5 miles from apple store. Did it over the phone just had to give them serial number and my credit card. No mention ever of going into store to have it inspected

That's not protocol. It's supposed to be presented for inspection.

Well when I had an iPhone 3, I dropped that smashed the screen and had no insurance on it. Got the screen replaced for €70. iPhones do not have to be replaced when they break, they can be fixed or have certain parts such as screens replaced.

I would've just called and ordered the Applecare+ before getting an appointment. Right after you receive the applecare I would take the iPhone and tell them you broke and just $50 and get it replaced. I think now they are going to make you pay $200 for a replacement.

The unibody iPhone 5 will need to be replaced in its entirety as the damage is on the back panel.
