And the plus series continues to be the superior phone.

Why is anyone surprised by this? The current plus sized iphone has a better camera than its little sister.

Also did anyone think that maybe they couldn't fit dual lens on the 4.7?

it is not about space. It is about differentiating a flagship model
Screen size should not be a factor in determining a flagship model. That's just a stupid thing to do that unnecessarily fragments the market. I'd happily pay top line price for a device with top line features but the screen size I want. As would clearly many other commenters here and elsewhere.

what a mistake. the fragmentation is nasty. that 5.5 is WAY to large for active people.

My 4.7 even feels slightly large but i've come to enjoy it. Works for business and is comfortable enough during gym sessions and jogs. But fragmenting it with something so important as the camera is such a mistake.

Apples move and im sure i won't hurt them as a departing customer, but if the S8E builds off of the S7, that'll be my next phone.

1. This is not about fragmentation. This is about Apple always striving to make the best product it can.

2. It is OK for Apple to have STRATIFICATION since this makes people want to pay more to get the more expensive models. This means higher profits for Apple - which is always OK.

3. Obviously, only the larger iPhone has room for MULTIPLE cameras. I would love to see the QUAD camera model on the iPhone 7s.

4. The 5.5 inch iPhone is NOT small for the millions of Chinese people who want one. I love my big iPhone. I can use it with one hand. So obviously, Apple wants a full selection of iPhones for every hand size. The whole reason Apple had a huge success recently with the iPhone is that people want BIGGER iPhones, particularly ASIANS despite their allegedly smaller hands.

Best post so far. And LOL at all of you who are having a titty attack based on a rumor from this guy.

Also having a good laugh that people are still throwing fits because Apple doesn't design a phone based on their own personal use case.

Most of us realize this is just a rumor and take it lightly, but we are also reacting to the absurd reactions of those that do take it too seriously. It's a reactionception.

OBSCENE profit margins?

Really?

Google has a higher profit margin than Apple.
Microsoft has a higher profit margin than Apple.

Apple's profit margins are about 22% the last 3 years.

So for every $1 of sales Apple get 22 cents of profit. That is NOT obscene IMO.

Actually they are 30% to 50% plus, they take 30% cut from every single iOS and in app sale so your already wrong, same as Alphabet. Alphabet do not make any money from the Android platform or devices bar the Nexus range or IAPs.

Here's a breakdown of the iPhone 5 just to highlight their markup:

Note I am not saying other companies don't do the same, but this is about Apple. You brought up other companies.

Differentiating what? The iPad Pro is the flagship model? And the 9.7" has a much better camera than the 12.9" Pro.

So... iPhone/iPad innovation at Apple today: or you pay more for a "Pro" label or you pay more for a giant device.

Same thing with the 27" iMac. A retina iMac? Sure, great, awsome, yay! But WTF happened with the price?

Don't like the price? Buy a normal one. It's not cheap putting a 5K (high quality) display in there. I understand your concern with their new high margin approach, but I think it's justified as long as the specs match up. What is not justified is the iPhone Plus/Pro where they put a whopping 1080p display on 5.5", and mark it up $100.

Just keep in mind that the prices will come down and become closer to market value over time. When the 15" rMBP came out it was exuberantly priced as well, but prices have come down a little. Either way, new apple has now gone from having an "Apple Tax", to having an "Apple Tax +"

What a silly statement.

This is like expecting a Honda Fit, Honda Civic, and Honda Accord to all have the exact same engine.

Dude every heard of geometry? You can't expect a small phone to pack in all the same hardware as a much larger phone. Just as you can't expect a sub compact car to have the same engine as a full sized car.
For the most part they do though, the only difference between the 6S and the 6S Plus is the optical stabilisation on the camera. Same processor, ram, storage etc...

Also the analogy with cars isn't necessarily the best. The BMW M3 and M5 have different engines, but a lot of that is because the M3 is smaller and lighter and therefore doesn't need as big of an engine to get the same performance. They don't say "sorry Mr Customer, if you want the blisteringly fast version you have buy the M5, we only make the 3 series with 2 stroke, pull start lawn mower engine"...

Similar form factor seems to imply the same footprint. I expect they will make the iPhone 7 thinner though.

If the recent complete redesign is true for next year, then this makes sense. This will be a stop gap iPhone model for one year. And then the significant changes come in 2017. I don't think Apple can keep the current bezels until 2018. They are simply too large.

2017 redesign will see significantly less bezel, perhaps no home button, curved shapes, OLED, etc.

As someone else pointed out Apple has done this with Macs since forever. But since Apple decided to give the bigger iPhone a different name (which they haven't done with Macs) then I think it should be marketed as a separate product. Apple's not doing so now.

I doubt the iPhone 7 will be thinner.
I disagree. If they don't go thinner and keep the same footprint it's going to look near identical to what we currently have. Plus all rumors point to them going thinner.

So the support for a rumor started by Ming-Chi Kuo is more Ming-Chi Kuo?

There's something odd to me about how Ming-Chi Kuo is so often referred to with some kind of praising modifier. In this case, "according to a new research note issued by respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo." I get that some people swear by his predictions, but if you do a search, you'll find others out there who note ample Ming-Chi Kuo prediction failures, suggesting the praise for his accuracy is based on confirmation bias. Nonetheless, it's odd to me that citations of his predictions usually seem to carry with them added hype like "respected," or "reliable" or "respected and informed." It sure feels like there's a publicist involved in the process somewhere.

Don't give me that bullcrap estimates by some company that has no idea how much Apple pays for parts. Not to mention has no idea about R&D, sales expense, ect.

Go straight to the SEC filings that are audited by the SEC. And if they are wrong people go into jail.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=AAPL+Income+Statement&annual

2015
Apple made $53 billion in profit
Apple had $234 billion in sales
Profit margin was only 22.6%

2014
$39 billion in profit
$183 billion in sales
Profit margin was only 21.3%

2013
$37 billion in profit
$171 billion in sales
Profit margin was only 21.6%

So are you telling me 22% profit margins are obscene?

The last 3 years Google has had profit margins of 21%, 21%, and 23%. Basically identical to Apple. Google's margins would have been 25% if it wasn't for the Motorola losses they wrote off the last 3 years. So taking out the Motorola disaster (which very few customers benefited from) Google has had HIGHER profit margins than Apple.

Microsoft is even higher. The last 3 years they have had 12%, 25%, and 28% profit margins. Last year was low because they wrote of $8 billion in the Nokia disaster. Microsoft has profit margins of 25-30% historically.

So there you have it.

Google has HIGHER profit margins than Apple (removing losses on Motorola)
Microsoft has MUCH HIGHER profit margins than Apple.

Yet its Apple who has obscene profit margins?

I have no choice when it comes to the 27" model. For my company, I have two iMacs from 2010 and I don't want to replaced them for smaller displays. But now, I have to pay for retina, even when it's not my wish. And it's way out of budget.

I gotcha. What I'm getting is you can always buy a refurb (Link 1, Link 2), or buy a new "old" one on amazon.

If Apple made the 7 and 7+ with identical features:

"What the hell Apple. You are charging me $100 more for the same phone except one has a larger screen."
"Oh so its a plus just because it has a larger screen. Ripping off people as usual Apple"

If Apple adds additional hardware to the larger 7+ and not the 7 because of size and heating limitations:

"What the hell Apple. Why are you forcing me to buy a super big phone to get the best hardware!"

As you can see no matter what Apple does there will be clowns who criticize their decision.

My take? Apple knows what they are doing.

They are the most valuable company in the world with the most powerful and respected name in the world.
They will sell over 200,000,000 of these phones in 12 months.
And get 99% satisfaction ratings.

I know this post is maybe just a rumour but I truly believe Apple is either running out of ideas for the iPhone/ipad as they just seem to be tweaking or like most ppl think adding a gimmick which they will try to sell us as the next best or they have something in the pipeline...... I like many others always bought the latest iPhone but I have have upgraded to iPhone 6 due to the stagnant nature Apple has become. Lets be honest look over the last few year they just announce the same thing but describe it as better C'mon its a mobile device !!!!!!!! Rant over

So if the 4.7" iPhone 7 has the same camera, the same enclosure, and pretty much the same everything else except an A10 chip, then what's the point of upgrading? The iPhone 6s is in no way slow. I guess it will be slightly thinner? But that probably means the battery life won't be changing much. They might remove the headphone jack and put in another speaker. Whoopeeee! I guess they could improve the display like in the iPad Pro, with lower reflectivity, better color reproduction and True Tone sensors. I doubt the camera will get a brighter aperture if they're making it thinner. They might be able to use a newer Sony sensor which works better in low light. We might see an improved 3D Touch with better Taptic Engine feedback and improved sensitivity for finer control of gestures.

But those are so many small things. With the iPhone, Apple usually likes to at least add one big new feature and a couple decent supporting features. Here are some of the bigger changes for each iPhone:
  • iPhone 3G
    • Redesign
    • Faster Internet
    • GPS
  • iPhone 3GS
    • Speed
    • Better camera
    • Video recording
  • iPhone 4
    • Redesign
    • Retina display
    • Better camera and video recording (720p HD for first time)
  • iPhone 4s
    • Siri support with new microphones
    • Much faster
    • Better camera and video recording (1080p for first time)
  • iPhone 5
    • Redesign with new lightning port and headphone jack moved to bottom
    • First iPhone with larger display
    • Much faster mobile internet with LTE
  • iPhone 5s
    • Touch ID
    • Speed with first mobile 64-bit chip that supports slow-mo video and burst mode photos
    • New motion co-processor for activity tracking
  • iPhone 6
    • Redesign
    • New display sizes, including first iPhone in two sizes
    • NFC chip with secure enclave for Apple Pay
  • iPhone 6s
    • 3D Touch
    • Improved camera and video recording (4k for first time)
    • Everything is much faster with new chips across the board, even in the Touch ID, and "Hey Siri" baked in
So that leaves us to the iPhone 7. What is as big as some of the above features?
  • iPhone 7
    • Waterproof or resistant
    • True Tone display with excellent contrast and low reflectivity
    • Dual camera system but only on the Plus size?
    • Kind of redesigned to be slightly thinner with minimized antenna bands
I just don't know if that's very compelling, especially once you remove the dual camera system for the vast majority of users. And I don't see the usual camera improvements for the 4.7" being all that impressive. I don't see the A10 being a massive speed increase over the A9 since they're making the iPhone 7 a little thinner. The iPhone 7 is lacking a big "wow" change, and that's why I put waterproof or resistant. Now resistant would be a bit disappointing as many could argue the iPhone 6s is already water resistant, just as an article earlier today showed an iPhone 6s surviving underwater for 30 minutes with only the speakers were damaged. It would be nice if they could take the next logical step and make it completely water proof. Otherwise we're left with a device that is slightly redesigned with a better display. What will be the big wow feature? The next 3D Touch, Apple Pay, Touch ID, LTE, Siri, Retina Display, etc? I think their dual camera system will probably have some marketable name that could fill that slot. And it will be a big wow feature. And that's precisely why they need to do everything in their power to make it happen on the smaller iPhone 7, even if they must leave it the current thickness to fit everything inside. Otherwise expect something like waterproofing to be a big selling point for the smaller model, along with a better display. Apple could do a marketing campaign centered around the iPhone being an active phone for active people with improved display outdoors as well as no longer needing a thick Otterbox to protect it from water. They could show it shooting underwater video and photos in their signature commercial style.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what else it could have. I know they've been experimenting with some advanced haptics for generating electric fields on the display that mimic certain textures. That could be interesting when combined with something like 3D Touch. Otherwise, I made a thread before that big rumor about the real redesign being in 2017 saying I think this is just an interim upgrade until the real one comes in 2017. The one with sapphire laminated glass, reduced bezels, OLED, etc. The true redesign. Maybe they could even put the dual camera module in both sizes by then.

Muggles. I don't like the 'we're saving the better stuff for the bigger model' thing. I don't want a 5.5" phone!!!

Then get the 4.7 phone.

Why is it so hard to understand that Apple can't fit a much larger camera in a much smaller phone?

The dual camera's will add too much bulk to the 4.7 phone. Open any iPhone from the last couple years and you will see how packed these devices are. Every single cubic micrometer is accounted for.

All of this does not matter.

People are in a pattern. People like to replace to a new phone every year or every 2 years.

Don't overthink it. The jump from 5 to 5s was not that big for 'normal' consumers. Sure it had 64 bit and fingerprint. But most 'normal' people have no idea what that meant. All they knew was the 5s was the newest iPhone and bought it.

People on these forums are not 'normal' people. Keep that in mind.

Apple will once again sell 200,000,000 iPhone7 in the next year and all this worrying will be totally unjustified.
