This is plain stupidity - enough Apple leaks and information for there to be no reason to begin a pre-order thread. Some of the best & most informed members of this forum are not supportive of the iron fist approach.

MR really makes me wonder sometimes. Luckily there are also other Apple forums that are not as short minded.

So we can discuss completely baseless and completely speculative rumours on an iPhone that won't be released for another 3 months, but we can't discuss anything about pre-ordering an iPhone that won't be released for another 3 months.

Hmmmm.......

Not going to rehash anything as it's already been settled. I agree with the majority of comments from all sides. The large threads do drive traffic, conversation and fun. I LOVE those threads.

I look forward to the comments and comradery during the events/announcements and anticipation of pre-order/delivery and the like. I think the mods should make the mega threads, otherwise you're going to have people racing to be the first one. Lol

Thread starters don't make mega-threads, the people who post in them do.

The 2 threads in question prove that.
No. When you post a topic like "Pre-Orders/et al for XYZ thread" you are deliberately channeling all future posts about pre-orders (et al) to your thread therefore creating a mega thread. As the rules state, you can't be creating duplicate threads; hence, any initial pre-order thread becomes one.

As per other mega-threads, they become so when certain issues arise like poor camera quality, a defect on a product, broken updated, etc. People making those threads aren't looking to make one.

If that were true, then the Monday thread would have had 51 posts and the Wednesday thread 1....but the first thread wasn't what people were looking for.

In the end two things happened that cause traffic discrepancy:
  1. The original thread was made 3 months in advance of the actual announcement and people were discussing the topics in the prior year's thread
  2. The second duplicated thread drove traffic as the OP of that thread posted in the prior year thread about the change and hence channeled any new traffic there. Again this second duplicate thread being also 3 months in advance.
It is sufficient to say the action taken by the mod team is warranted and policy handling is further detailed.

Echoing a lot of the comments here and reiterating the importance of what having a space to be able to discuss, air views and most importantly help and support the large community that value the conversation.

I for one, only found, relied on and signed up to mac rumours for such a thread (the iPad 2 launch). My contributions to this site are in the 3-4 months around build up and launch of the new phone and there are many, many others in the same position.

I may have started the last 5 years or so of the UK annual iPhone thread, but before that it was someone else and the next one it could be the same - no one is entitled to want to start a thread, but as it was eloquently put above, it’s the users who make the “mega threads” not the OP. I really struggle to understand why they are seen as an issue when they clearly add so much value to the contributors - it honestly feels like you’ve taken the peoples ‘voice’ away.

The UK thread adds a ‘British’ slant on the proceedings, it’s literally years worth of information and experience we all share and add too.

I really do hope that a sensible conclusion can be reached here and from the comments here alone you see how many care about a thread on a forum about a phone.

Was the second one actually a dup thread though?

It's my understanding that the first thread got caught up in a spam filter. I bet ya my old (but running) Apple ][gs here that it was still in purgatory when the second thread was created. I could be wrong though.

The first one was caught in the spam filter but released the same day it was posted per mod feedback earlier in this thread. The second one came a whole 2 days after.

this?
@AbSoluTc Your thread was not deleted or otherwise hidden by moderators. What happened is your thread was flagged by a spam tool that is part of the forum software, and once a moderator saw the thread was not spam, the thread was approved and unhidden.

I hope this explains.

I don't see a timeframe in that response.

Does the date of the first post in that thread denote when it came out of purgatory or when it was authored?

This is like CSI: MR

Why not create an iphone 15 pre-order thread then? Whatever little information is available can be discussed. This isn't the hall of fame for MR mega-threads, based on who claims a thread title first. It's a discussion forum, and it seems the staff wants to have a modicum of organization and sensibility.

In the meantime, nobody is saying the iphone 14 can't be discussed in any of the existing threads...even to the point of declaring what one may decide to order based on current rumors.

The date on any threads denoted when it was first published, not released. But it was released same day based on the responses of people seeing it Monday.

I think it makes sense not to have a preorder thread until Apple has officially announced a release date. A lot of people rely on this site for information and if there are preorder threads long before the aforementioned occurs, it can create confusion for forum members and those looking on. What Weasel said is practical and cuts down on a lot of unnecessary work for all concerned.

Put the forum egos aside and have some fun. There really is no need to beat this incident into the ground, in my opinion.

The date shown in that post is the date it was first created.

Here was the time line.

1. First thread created Monday 11:56 AM (all time local to me in California)

2. Spam tool tripped and the thread was hidden at 1:03 PM

3. A mod reviewed the thread and approved it (making it reappear) at 10:37 PM

4. The second pre-order thread was created Wednesday at 7:01 AM

You need to reread this thread. I made it clear that is not the case.

It is only pre-order/order tracking threads we are not allowing until after the announcement.
Thanks for clarification.

But the case thread that I created as per last year and year before had nothing to do with pre orders then why that got dumped to wasteland. Please advise 😊.

Or worse, an arms race starts up with people constantly creating threads that go further and further into the future (iPhone 27 pre-orders, :apple:Car pre-orders, MacBook Argon pre-orders, Quantum Mac Pro pre-orders...).

This is why I think MR's approach currently makes sense.

I'll get with the other mods and return with an answer for you.
Thank you.

And if you and other mods can further clarify what do you mean ‘after the announcement’.

1. After Mister Cook announces the iPhone 14.

Or

2. After the price structure is announced.

As we all aware its a hectic time for you and other admin staff during the key note so id rather ask all this now than bug you during the keynote 🙄.

Asking on someone else behalf and for me.

I agree with much of what has already been said here. These types of pre-order threads are exactly why I joined the MacRumors forums for the iPhone 12 launch - so of course I was disappointed to see all threads were locked. I am glad to see that we will still be able to have these types of discussions once the iPhone 14 is announced.

I would like to echo the same questions above. What does "after the announcement" mean?
  • The day of the announcement?
  • When the event starts?
  • When the iPhone is announced during the event?
  • When MacRumors posts an article detailing the iPhone 14 announcement?
  • When the event concludes?
I fear another flurry of duplicate articles happening the day of the event.

Seems outrageous that the mods are sticking to this decision. Can we not compromise and start one 1st August?
Yes 🙏🏻 please. Rumour mill will be going crazy so where are we suppose to share our thoughts and excitement.

Anyways I hope Mods can show some leniency after all there are far worse things happening around the world.

Peace out ✌️ from me. Im going to go fire up my Switch and play Street Fighter lol.
