Google should seriously consider taking the hint and a play from Microsoft’s book and just get out of the smart phone business. I cannot see any reason why anyone would buy a pixel and they cannot claim that the camera is better anymore. (Which it really never was and there is speculation they paid Dx to skew the results in their favor)

Nice subjective, anecdotal review.

Thank you.

In all honesty I've found the photos on my XS for indoor photos to come out blurry and lacking detail compared to the Pixel 2.

Here is an example. Look how soft this photo is! I've blurred the kids faces and provided a 100% crop.

Apple probably not selling as expected from press in recent days. Now here comes favorable review long after released. Hmm.

Erm, isn't this a whole other beast, as in, Mobile camera's are in a different class than DSLR's so 100 points don't compare.

The average consumer is stupid.....
I don't think they're stupid but rather just don't care enough to test for themselves or look deeper into the technology. They rely on headlines, marketing and popularity to justify their purchases. I think we're all guilty of that in one way or another.

I’m sure the Xr has a good camera, as does pretty much every expensive smartphone these days. But picture quality is too subjective for a precise score like “101” to make sense.

The XR is such a misunderstood product... reminds me of iPhone SE in that sense.

I guess I like these types :D
Literally nothing was misunderstood about the SE. People knew exactly why it existed and what it's purpose was.

A more accurate comparison is the 5C. A cheaper product at a premium price.

I have a 7 Plus (dual camera), and thinking XR for my upgrade. The XS is beautiful but I'm not seeing enough to warrant the extra cost that fits my usage/lifestyle/etc.

This is exactly what I have mentioned earlier....this review is only for people on double mind between XS and XR denying Apple a sale

Only because they haven’t tested the Pixel 3 yet. ;)

Was just going to say, I didn't see the Pixel 3 on their site... maybe they had to delay that review so they could say this first for Apple, then next week the Pixel 3's will come out.

So Google knew the IPhone is better like the last article by a photography sitet hat compared the iPhone to the Pixel 3 stating the main plus was the impressive but gimmicky night mode that would rarely be used. Most tech sites that have a love feast with Google because they like free stuff and Google, Samsung and others are willing to provide benefits for good reviews.

I'll give better video to the iPhone, but for pictures, the Pixel 3 wins hands down, with or without nightsight.

I had to smile to myself when I read your comment as it was exactly my thought.
Over the past few years when the iPhone was beaten by this companies score, we saw the majority of posters rubbishing this company and it's tests/results.

I was/am keep to see if this opinion here now changes that Apple have got to the top in the category again ;)

I would love to believe people stick to their guns, and don't flip/flop their opinion simply based upon current results.

I wonder if in reverse the lovers of these companies and their reviews now will bash them :)

What I am getting at is in all of the other articles mentioning competitors phones, there are a never ending amount of comments saying that it is subjective, that it doesn't matter, that it is bias or whatever. Even above this comment saying that Huawei's score was paid for, that somehow it wasn't independent. People literally can't get their heads round another company producing something far better than Apple can.

I actually value what DxOMark do a lot, they produce the same tests across multiple devices for a proper like for like test. Photography is very subjective though. Look at this video from MKBHD that shoes the iPhones being beaten by a blackberry and Pocophone I think it was:

I own an 8 Plus. I admire the pics my boss' P20 Pro takes. The night modes in the latest handsets is amazing for what it is. The XR does take amazing photos, and better portrait pics in some instances than the X/XS. It is a great phone, but don't try and tell me that the very same people that were belittling the Samsung and P20 Pro results won't be the same people that tell their friends about how the XR "is the best single camera smartphone" on the market. What is telling is they haven't reviewed the Pixel 3 yet. They are basing the latest and greatest from Apple with a 1 year old device. We will see what happens when they get round to the Pixel 3.

Marques specifically states that the likely reason for those phones "winning" is the extreme compression that exists on the platforms on which they were shared. I don't think any sane person would conclude that the Pocophone camera is better than the iPhone/Pixel 3 after viewing full resolution photos.

That's the most hilarious post today, thanks for the laugh :D

Yes, Google should exit the smart phone business, the one their operating system OWNS

I am assuming he/she is talking about hardware, which could make sense, although I think Google realizes that they may need a hardware focus moving forward. Their current business model may not hold up well in the future.

Not really that either. Did the 5c come with apple’s latest processor in it when it was released ?

Once someone has tried Googles Night Sight and compared it to any other phone camera (and indeed, many pure cameras) all the others (used in low light, non-flash) seem bitterly disappointing.

Since it was enabled on my Pixel 3 I have used it loads and it still utterly amazes me. After all the salty comments made on here after the XS low light comparison at the Google keynote , it should teach a few people about jumping to conclusions.

Even the zoom has some clever intelligence applied to it, rather than just cropping the original image. If Apple and Google combined their powers (to combine design to smarts) the device could be epic.

You're just embarrassing yourself with that post.

If that was the case then reference towards Microsoft contradicts. Microsoft stopped proceeding further on both Software (OS) and Hardware.

Google never even pretends it makes money in Nexus, Pixel et al...

I think the reference made sense. Microsoft exited the hardware business and that person was suggesting Google should do the same. Correct, Google really only makes money from advertising.

Marques also stated that people tended to prefer the "brighter" photos in his test.

It sounds like all it would take to "win" is to make sure your photo is exposed better.

I'm sure he was testing straight-out-of-camera with no-editing... but still.

Who knows why the iPhone took a slightly darker picture than the Blackberry. But I would have adjusted the iPhone to take a better picture if I was shooting a photo for real.

Also... tests like his are rather unrealistic. If you just looked at any of those photos alone you'd probably say they were fine. It's only when you put it next to another photo that you can begin to compare.

When I'm looking at photos on Instagram or whatever... I'm not looking at alternate photos of the same subjects taken from another camera (or 15). :p
