Which site does a more accurate analysis of image quality with cross-device comparison? That's an honest question.

None of them. With the exception of a few outliers, most high end smartphones today have very good and versatile cameras. Camera preference should be dependent on the user's perception of what makes a good photo not some arbitrary benchmarks.

Thank you. Nailed it. Far too much “ Pixel Peeping” in 2018. Photography has always been subjective. I’ve been making wildlife and landscape images my entire adult life. 10 individuals looking at an image will see 10 different creations. If what one uses pleases their inner photographer then there is no need for anything further. :apple:
It is amazing that while the tech nerds are arguing about the spec and numbers, real photographers can actually create arts with just a toy camera.

dpreview is a lot more respected and respectable and everybody there craps on dxo regularly. DXO's methodology has been critizised for being arbitrary and capricious for a hell of a long time in photography circles.

One thing they don't seem to be testing at all is setup-to-shot time to a clear shot under various conditions, which is crucial in a snapshot type camera like smartphones. If you have all the time in the world to set the shot and are immobile it's a hell of a different shot as if your taking the shot within a second of seeing something interesting. The speed of the whole camera subsystem and software would be crucial yet this is not really tested by those reductionist PQ tests.

Considering the higher speed of the Iphone, everything that requires a lot of processing in real time will be advantageous to it. That explains it being better in video but would also make it better in power up phone - setup camera software and camera - take in focus correctly exposed shot.

Most real “photographers” rely on “real” cameras. A smartphone camera is just a back up tool for them.

Pretty impressive for the "budget" iPhone. Especially considering the Pixel 2 was highly praised.
Those 3% better test scores sound a little less "impressive" when you take into consideration that the pixel 2 sells for 25% less than the "budget" iPhone.

We going to pretend DxOMark is relevant now that it favours an iPhone?
Actually. They didn’t review smartphones until the first pixel came out. Now that the new pixel 3 isn’t much of an upgrade over the 2. It probably didn’t score well. Which is why there is no review of it.

DXO was in bed with google long before Apple came into play.

What I am getting at is in all of the other articles mentioning competitors phones, there are a never ending amount of comments saying that it is subjective, that it doesn't matter, that it is bias or whatever. Even above this comment saying that Huawei's score was paid for, that somehow it wasn't independent. People literally can't get their heads round another company producing something far better than Apple can.

I actually value what DxOMark do a lot, they produce the same tests across multiple devices for a proper like for like test. Photography is very subjective though. Look at this video from MKBHD that shoes the iPhones being beaten by a blackberry and Pocophone I think it was:

I own an 8 Plus. I admire the pics my boss' P20 Pro takes. The night modes in the latest handsets is amazing for what it is. The XR does take amazing photos, and better portrait pics in some instances than the X/XS. It is a great phone, but don't try and tell me that the very same people that were belittling the Samsung and P20 Pro results won't be the same people that tell their friends about how the XR "is the best single camera smartphone" on the market. What is telling is they haven't reviewed the Pixel 3 yet. They are basing the latest and greatest from Apple with a 1 year old device. We will see what happens when they get round to the Pixel 3.
The images were compressed and lost their sales original image quality.
[doublepost=1544408002][/doublepost]News flash everyone. Google got in bed with DXO as they were the first to review a smartphone camera in the original pixel. It had the highest score then. Then the pixel 2 had the highest score. Until it got beaten.

The iPhone XR came out weeks after the pixel 3. Still no review?? It’s because DXO reviewed the pixel 3, and it wasn’t much of an upgrade over the 2. Google wanted the review scrapped. Then Apple came along, and iPhone XS scores 105, and XR 101.

LOL my thoughts exactly! They'll switch the moment they get their hands on, pockets lined by Google for the Pixel 3.

Common..... everything is fine in love and war !

What movie is that from!??

I cannot recall if it was a John Hughes movie or some other movie in the 90's ... driving me nuts because I can hear the voice saying it and I just not know who said it. Definitely not Bill Paxton ... what was it Bill from Predator 2, not Weird Science?!

Some History of that quote for those that are curious:

https://www.quora.com/Who-said-everything-is-fair-in-love-and-war

The earliest known origin of the sentiment "all is fair in love in war" is found in poet John Lyly's novel "Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit," published in 1579. The novel recounts the romantic adventures of a wealthy and attractive young man, and includes the quote "the rules of fair play do not apply in love and war." The first known appearance of the quote worded "all is fair in love and war" is in English author Francis Edward Smedley's 1850 novel "Frank Fairleigh" about the life of a schoolboy.

DxOMark today published the results of its in-depth analysis of the iPhone XR's single-lens rear camera. Apple's flagship smartphone achieved an overall score of 101 points, surpassing Google's Pixel 2 to make it the top-ranked single lens phone in the site's rankings.

In its testing, DxOMark found the iPhone XR to offer "a very similar proposition for image quality as the flagship iPhone XS Max," across key photo attributes like exposure, color, detail, noise, and artifacts.

Both devices also achieved the same overall score for video, but the dual lenses of the iPhone XS Max meant the XR fell behind on zoom and bokeh shots, although DxOMark noted that Apple had managed to improve the flash on the more affordable single-lens iPhone.

The review adds that the iPhone XR has very good exposure and dynamic range in bright light and indoor conditions, while detail is well-preserved in all lighting conditions with "vivid and pleasant colors in most situations."

The few cons the review noted included the visibility of fine grain luminance noise in indoor and low-light conditions, while video was criticized for instabilities in white balance when filming indoors.

DxOMark concludes that the photographic capabilities of the iPhone XR are "broadly similar to those of the XS/XS Max" which should make the less-expensive model "desirable to many Apple enthusiasts looking to upgrade their smartphone."

For its scoring and analysis methodology, DxOMark says its engineers capture and evaluate over 1,500 test images and more than two hours of video both in controlled lab environments and in natural indoor and outdoor scenes, using the camera's default settings.

DxO is a well-known French image lab that has been reviewing smartphone cameras for several years, but they aren't immune to criticism, which just goes to show how subjective image quality can sometimes be.

And I have no doubt about it

Did you just say that? Buy a $20 Java phone and compare it with a current flagship phone. You will see the difference.

You did not understand what i said. I said no single phone takes better pictures and videos than everything else on the market available. There are still way too many variables when it comes to quality when comparing different brands

I have a 7 Plus (dual camera), and thinking XR for my upgrade. The XS is beautiful but I'm not seeing enough to warrant the extra cost that fits my usage/lifestyle/etc.
Yep, I’m in the same boat. The 7 Plus has been the best phone I’ve ever had so it’s made it tough to want to replace but the XR seems like a great overall replacement.

And this is why DPReview called the iPhone XS the best all around camera.

Translation: "every other manufacturer in the XR's price bracket gives you at least 2 lenses"
Yet doesn’t deliver the same quality results.

Thank you.

In all honesty I've found the photos on my XS for indoor photos to come out blurry and lacking detail compared to the Pixel 2.

Here is an example. Look how soft this photo is! I've blurred the kids faces and provided a 100% crop.

Just one picture?? It looks like you had the focus on something else, not the kids.

Go see ZoneOfTech youtube comparison of iPhone XS versus pixel 2. Then go watch XS vs pixel 3. He does a really in depth review.
[doublepost=1544553517][/doublepost]Took these on my Max.

Some are too big for the original sizes so I could only get these to upload

There is, a camera that takes the best pictures in the largest set of environments with the least amount of shortages is the best phone camera. Just like there is no perfect girl in the world that embodies the ultimate femininity, but you can find find a girl that ticks most amount of boxes and has the least amount of red flags.

View attachment 810644 I just traded in my 7 Plus today and took a couple quick pics with my XR. So far impressed with how good Portrait mode looks. My year and half old just woke up but was happy to be outside. I like the ability to edit F stop after the fact.
How do you like Face ID and no home button?? I thought it would take me longer to get used to it, only took about 2 days.

So it turns out Face ID is just about as fast as Touch ID. I use my phone on raise to wake so I pick up my phone towards my face and swipe up as I’m looking at it in one motion and it’s much faster than I anticipated. I really like Face ID. I don’t know if it it’s any faster than the iPhone X because of the performance of the new A12 chips in the new iPhones, but it’s fast.

Yeah it always works very fast for me. Sometimes even if my phone is resting on a table, I can look st it sideways and it still unlocks. A friend of mine has the X and it’s not slow, but def. a little slower than mine in my Max. The biggest surprise for me is the camera. Apple really undersold the new camera upgrades. It’s night and day compared to my 7 Plus. (Mind you that was a very good camera too)
