I don't know why people keep saying a Macbook Pro update will upstage the Macbook Air. The truth is IT WON'T!

The Macbook Air is for a completely different market to the Macbook Pro's. There will also be a hell of a lot of publicity surrounding the release of the Macbook Air's and just the sheer curiosity of the public will pull people into the Apple Stores to look at the Macbook Air.

The Updated Macbook Pro will be a silent update. It will not be publicised at all, and people going to see the Macbook Air will see the Macbook Air, and won't pay any attention to the seemingly 'same old Macbook Pro'. In addition, if people haven't been looking for a Macbook Pro or waiting for a Macbook Pro update, they won't know it's been updated.

Just my $0.02

yes to the above, and having come into the store to look over the Air, finding it's not quite enough for them, many people will turn to the Pro and find it's been updated in line with competitive offerings from other laptop mfr's, and their hearts will be warmed as their wallets are emptied...

I don't understand the sense in silently updating a system. Where there's money to be made the best option is to promote, publicise and try and make the most money you can. The best option would be to release the MBA, get the spotlight and hype sales, then update the MBP in a month or two and get the spotlight and sales for the MBP.

People might say the MBP and MBA won't be competing for the same market but I don't believe that's true. In lots of threads I've seen someone say "Well the MacBook Pro's delayed... I might get the MacBook Air instead". It may make no sense to you, but to others what they want is a new machine. I doubt most people who buy pro's really 'need' them. They just want them, and there's no difference between wanting an MBA than a MBP.

it's not a big enough deal to make a hullaballoo over, that's why. updating the mbpro's to the new penryn processors is not sexy, especially since other manufacturers will also be shipping their products with the same penryns. apple keeps its powder dry until it has something to proclaim, like redesigns and new gear. that's why their proclamations tend to garner such hot media attention. why squander the (hard-earned) power of that bullhorn?

The current design is still going strong IMHO. No other computer manufacturer has even come close to the minimalist sexiness of the Alu PB / MBP. And it just happens to be the only current Apple computer with a keyboard that doesn't look like a child's toy.

Yes...but...If people come into the store and find the Macbook Air is not quite enough for them, they will turn to the Macbook Pro anyway. That won't change. The Macbook Air isn't suddenly going to stop suiting people just because the Macbook Pro is updated and similarly the Macbook Air isn't going to do anything more than it does now if the Macbook Pro stays the same.

Take a close look at the product release dates in the buyer's guide. Patterns start to emerge. Its no accident that for the last two years, new upgrades come out in the first week of the month, on a Tuesday or Wednesday (MW excluded). This is no secret holy grail, but rather sound marketing policy.

Now notice that Apple rarely releases more than 2 major upgrades per month. The only exception is September, which is wisely loaded with consumer-level machines to beef up 4th quarter sales.

January has already been good, so we're getting greedy asking for a MBP tomorrow. We already got the MBA, Mac Pro, and server upgrades this month- more than your average January. I make no guarantee of 2/5, but it makes perfect sense, from a marketing perspective and also in context with the recent rumors.

excellent tea-leaf reading, man!

I think that if the case has been redesigned for this update, we will be waiting a while more. I however doubt a redesign will accompany this update.

They would only be using things that they have used in one or both of their other laptops already (new keyboard, multitouch, magnetic latch)... it wouldn't require a special event or anything.
