The whole point of airtags is so that others will see it and scan it to help return it to its original owner.

"Doesn't add much bulk?"

I'm confident someone can do this test via displacement, but at first glance it doubles the volume of the air tag.

"I didn't gain much weight! I'm only 160 lbs. heavier than before"

I agree. You will be out of luck if you ever lose the speak screw driver needed to take the holder apart. They must have consulted with Apple about specialized screws. lol
Looks like a regular Torx bit to me, not even a security one. Should be readily available at pretty much any hardware store or even Walmart, Target, etc.

I was thinking Torx but couldn't tell for sure in the pic. I do have a Torq 6 around here somewhere. If I had my Airbags, maybe I could find it. :D
Any chance those are pentalobe screws? I have a tiny screw driver kit from long ago when Apple used those for some essential purpose. I doubt it would matter, but it certainly makes pulling the battery and disabling the tag much harder if that is some obscure screw.

Picture shows a common Torx socket, why would any but the most inept be "out of luck"?

that looks like a nightmare to take apart just to replace the batteries.
Good thing you only have to change the batteries once a year. Unless you permanently loose the item it's attached to, in which case you won't have to change the batteries at all. 🤔

times 12 airtags per year.

Still not a nightmare. I change the oil and rotate my tires on my vehicle every 3,000 miles (which for me is a little over 4 times per year), which would take far longer than replacing 12 AirTag batteries with these holders once a year, and I don't consider that a nightmare either. It's just routine maintenance.

I also doubt most people are going to be using THAT many AirTags, but maybe I'm wrong.
